A Short Introduction to Lean Six Sigma

Lean Six Sigma (LSS) is a combination of two popular continuous improvement methodologies: Lean that is considered to be based on Toyota production system and Six Sigma developed by Motorola. One of the reasons to combine the methodologies lies in fact that despite the differences in improvement tools and principles both methodologies have complementary effects. LSS is a customer oriented methodology focusing on proactively improving the production and transactional processes by preventing the defects from occurring rather than reacting to defects once they already occurred. LSS is a problem-solving technology that uses data, measurements, and advanced statistics to identify the vital few factors that govern the process and have direct impact on waste, product and process quality levels. It eliminates the gut-feeling decision making as the basic principle is to rely on data and facts. LSS allows to maximize the shareholder value by achieving the fastest rate of improvement in customer satisfaction, cost, quality, process speed, etc. Finally and mostly, the right usage of LSS makes the customer satisfied
