This video is amazing, I wish I found it before I colored one of my best drawings and ruined it 😂 Im going to redraw it and use the layering technique or the burnishing technique. Thank you!! :)
Jessica Dean no one is supposed to be as fast as a professional, its normal to take much time and with practice we get better, if a beginner compares his pace anyone else’s pace he will get depressed and give up.
I've seen so many of these different techniques but always wondered which was actually better... it's great to see a side by side comparison like this. The results have all turned out great!
My name is Surbhi and I am 13 now. I am drawing from five years till now because I love art. I was never aware of methods of blending like this to give thr drawing a perfect look and shade but after I knew it I came your with your video and it really helped thank you for this. A new sub to you.😁
I usually use the 5th one; the white pencil method. My art teacher taught me this in school just last year. I used it for an art class project and it turned out beautiful!
Thanks for the tutorial! I used the blender (the paper-layered one) in school but I acknowledged that it is not very appreciated within the community bc some people say it doesn't take a lot of practice and so I wanted to know other methods.
Elena Beatrice Martinelli I've never heard of that kind of conflict before, so, pardon my rudeness, but whoever is telling you such things is a moron. For one, most people recommend the usage of tortillions with pencils in the first place instead of your fingers because the oils, which all artists (ALL of them) use at some point or another. It is just another tool to use in the art studio to save time, so it is simply the smart and time-shortening way. Pay them no mind because whoever says something like that is ignorant to what art is. It's not about it being easy or hard, it's about having the best possible execution of your work. If a tortillion can get you there, you damn well use it. If they're providing constructive criticism, like suggesting easier/alternative tools, that is fine, but condemning a tool made for art is... blasphemy. Okay, rant over. I got a bit carried away, but I hope I encouraged you a little. ^^;
Thank you for your patient, orderly and concise teaching. Taking the time to show us the methods and results was very enlightening, and because I am an absolute beginner at age 66, I blessed you several times for not assuming I had any prior experience in blending methods. Well done, sir!🖌🖊📒✏️
Oh my goodness, this is such an EXCELLENT video. Content, illustration, description ... it's more than I even dared hope to find, here, on RUclips. Invaluable!!!
This is the best video I have sen on blending. I have been looking for videos on how to blend because I thought I really did not know how to and while watching you video I have been doing blending all a long. I have always did burnishing and never thought about it. I do a little layer and you helped me understand it more.
I love your videos and as a 'beginner' this one on blending is invaluable, as someone else pointed out, it is so well explained and shows many different methods, which is fantastic, it has helped me so much thank you
Yeah, I always used the layering technique you demonstrate here, but I was always frustrated because if I was too light the white of the paper would continue to show through. Yet, I didn't want to go too heavy because, one, it ruined the pale color I was looking for, and two, I hate when my drawing ends up with a slick, waxy surface. I'm thinking of investing in a blender pencil, like the one you're showing, do you think that will help me get the results I want?
Sarah Coleman Actually my suggestion is to go with smoother paper. The whites show through because the paper is not thin enough for colored pencils, perhaps that kind of paper is better with watercolors and coal but not colored pencils. So try to get smoother paper.
A blender pencil will still give a slick, waxy finish as you are still burnishing the paper. There are a few things I find cause what you explain. First, the pencil isn't sharp enough. As a result, the pencil can't get in to the parts between the tooth so it can't provide a smooth finish. Always keep your pencils sharp. Second, the paper could be the wrong type. I tend to go for fairly smooth paper for pencils. Maybe a couple of steps above what I'd use for markers.
Thank you for posting these blending methods on youtube. It has greatly helped in my original character illustrations, especially the hair, eyes and skin, even clothes!
This is a great tutorial for intermediate and beginners! By far one of the better tutorials I have seen on the use and application of colored pencils. You have a new subscriber, my friend!
Art@Fadil I'm still filtering through your playlists and videos. All of which have been extremely helpful! I thought I was all unique combining copics and pencils, but you've got it locked down. Can't wait to see what you do next! ^^
Magnificent tutorial and explanation as to which is good when. I appreciated how you did it all on one paper side by side for comparisons. So glad you landed in my recommendations!
Thank you so much very well inform video on blending . I'm starting to draw a color in my picture but there not as blended out just bold one color . Your video is very helpful for new artist like myself
Harley Quinzel Silly Harley, don't worry you'll get there someday. I believe in you. Just like Ivy believed in you to help you out of your abusive relationship with the Joker
This might be a joke but learning how to hold a pencil is still hard for me after 6 years of art. It's a lot more complicated than the community makes it seem.
I have just recently gotten interested in color pencil art and I wanted to learn of the different ways I could blend them, yet I could never find the right videos or tutorials to show me how. Your video was perfect in doing just that, I can finally breathe easy knowing that I can successfully learn to blend. I'm still somewhat scattered in my skills when it comes to drawing so I'm no artist, but I do love to doodle from time to time and color. Thank you very much!😆
What if you were to use the blending pencil on the burnishing effect? like you do the three colors and then blend the colors using the blending stick instead of using the crayons?
Splendid approach to presenting this method tutorial, Art@Fadil, for you demonstrate all five techniques not only right in front of the eyes of the viewer, but you have all the techniques on the same paper & thus all remaining before the eyes at the same time, facilitating comparisons. Very effective explanations as well. 👍🏼
Thank you so much for this extremely informative video. I'm very new to adult colouring and I got 72 set of Prismacolour Premier pencils for Xmas (yipee!!). I've learned so much from watching videos like this, but this one was a particularly good one, in my opinion. The way you take time to explain things is very good too. I'm so grateful to you. I've subscribed and look forward to watching many more of your videos. 👍💗😄
I'm sooo glad I found this channel, I'm 11 and can't afford the fancy pens and things so I have to work with just pencils and I could never blend right with them but this tutorial has improved my art so much! Thanks keep up the great work.
This video was sooooo helpful!! I've never heard of the "burnishing" Technique, it gave such a vibrant result! Will definitely try using it in my own drawings. Thank you again for another awesome video!
It's a long video but it's so worth it to get different ways to blend colored pencils, I have such a hard time using them but I really want to use more color in my drawings since I use so many neutrals.
Thank you so much for this tutorial. I was always fed up of my regular coloured pencil and envious of people who had the professional sort. But you've really made me see the light and taught me how to make good use of the ones i have. Thank you so much! You're techniques are very useful :D
Thank you very much for the step by step and clear instructions with the perfect advices and all the advantages disadvantages also!! You are awesome!!😍😍 Saw the whole video to the end.
Thank you for this video! Even though I mainly work with pencil crayons and use these techniques interchangeably, it never hurts to have a brush up on the basics. :) ~Have a wonderful day! ^^
Thank you so much for taking time to do this video. I am so glad that I found this video!! I have been struggling with my Prismacolor pencils. I think I need to change the pressure I use when I color along with some of my paper choices. Thanks again!!
I didn't know that the blending technique I've been using for all these years is called burnishing. Thanks for the amazing video. It's very informative.
This is one of the best tutorials I have seen; and the best tutorial on blending. You really helped: I now know why my blending has been horrible - whenever I've tried burnishing it has been with bad tools! And now I know that I should find softer paper and use layering instead because I think that will be easier for the pencils I have, perhaps practice solvent with my aqua pencils 🤔
i particularly like the solvent one, the texture is nice, it keeps the color pretty vibrant and my hand doesn't have to suffer from applying all that pressure from burnishing over and over again.
thank you for teaching me new techniques, l studied in a good ol' arts conservatory and they only taught me one method and never imagined there could be more. Thank you
Wonderful tutorial!!! You have explained things so well! Your tutorial is really helping me a lot with my blending, it's already looking so much better! Thank you so much!
In my opinion, Prisma colored pencils are better compared to Crayola and other colored pencils brands. They're smooth, clearly visible and pressure-sensitive to make shading easier, and they blend very well also. This is just my opinion when choosing a brand, only downfall is, is that they're a little more expensive than the more known brands like Crayola, but mostly because they're better quality. I'm just going to leave this here.
Meagan Walker I like Prismas too. I just found new pencils that are kind of like a mix of Prismas and Polychromos...and they’re are a decent price. I never used Crayola. What are they like ?
This is excatly what I need for my next due sketchbook assignment! Thank You so much! The explanations were great! I dont think i couldve found anything better!
Thank you for this detailed video, I was never a fan of using colored pencils in my sketches but I wanted to start using adult coloring books and this is a great help.
I am so thankful you made this, this was so helpful and such high quality!!!! You explained everything incredibly, and I always thought expensive branded color pencils were all that you could use if you want to color realistic drawings. This is my new favorite video, lol I think i can save a lot of money off color pencils now
Hello! Thank you so much for this! I like that you show and also tell the pros and cons of each application-this is better here, this is better for that, etc! Also seeing the whole process on each helped too! Very thorough and very helpful! Thank you so much for posting this video and thank you for sharing you knowledge and technique! :)
Thank you sir..your video is very useful...because tomorrow I have a colouring competition.. and my teacher said that I have to blend the colours...👍👍👌
Thank you , blending is a big problem for me. You have given me several options to try. Thank you for adding the captions. I don't hear very well so it a great help for me.
Thanks for the video. Your tutorials are really helpful!! Right now I use a mix of 1, 2 and white pencil (or the lightest colour of that hue) for blending. Thinking of starting the solvent method for my next drawing :)
I first saw one of your videos about how to draw a golden beetle but for some reason I couldn't find that video again! But I found this one! and now I'm subscribed!!!
i think this is one of the best videos on blending, so well explained and it displays different methods, I love it!
Thank you so much :D

My life makes sense now
They can also be used for light or covering mistakes
Julia's Comfy Corner Actually, this pencil is not white but a very very very clear blue

Elena Beatrice Martinelli
Are you talking about a tortillion (I know it sounds delicious )? It looks like a white pencil made of rolled up paper.
Alexandra Trigg yup. yeah it sounds like an ancient Greece delicacy to me XDD I never heard that name before.
Elena Beatrice Martinelli Well those people aren't very cool to not appreciate it, It still takes skill and gets the job done so what's the problem
+Devyat nine yeah I think so too.
Elena Beatrice Martinelli I've never heard of that kind of conflict before, so, pardon my rudeness, but whoever is telling you such things is a moron. you probably need a smoother surface

Sarah Coleman get a PRismacolor Blending MARKER, it doesn't burnish your paper and you don't get the shiny waxy appearance.
I never thought I'd be so impressed with a guy who could colour so well
This has got to be the most amazing and inspiring and informative I have ever seen!!!!!!
+Blademaster Gaming Thank you so much 😀
I learned more from this video than any others that I have watched concerning these techniques. Can't wait to see what you do with your watercolors.

Thank you so much for taking time to do this video. I am so glad that I found this video!! I have been struggling with my Prismacolor pencils. I think I need to change the pressure I use when I color along with some of my paper choices. Thanks again!!

the colors were so pretty I just had to click
I didn't know that the blending technique I've been using for all these years is called burnishing. Thanks for the amazing video. It's very informative.

i particularly like the solvent one, the texture is nice, it keeps the color pretty vibrant and my hand doesn't have to suffer from applying all that pressure from burnishing over and over again.
The 's' is 'solvent' is lower case and it's freaking me out.
+Imogen Nicholls haha! me too. only found out after drawing.
thank you for teaching me new techniques, l studied in a good ol' arts conservatory and they only taught me one method and never imagined there could be more. Thank you
I think number 4 work better if you use watercolour pencils
Britney Swift thanks you! 😁
and it will also appeal to me if it had a capital S
You literally just need to use water to dissolve your watercolor pencils
Wonderful tutorial!!! You have explained things so well! Your tutorial is really helping me a lot with my blending, it's already looking so much better! Thank you so much!
Oh its about shading... 😄
Wow, this is incredibly professional and super helpful! I will definitely use these techniques. Great video, and great channel!! 👍
In my opinion, Prisma colored pencils are better compared to Crayola and other colored pencils brands.
