DIY Shop Made Awl from Yew

  • If you've seen any of my other videos you might've noticed that when I need an awl I either use a round file or a drywall screw...neither of which is ideal. I decided in 2020 to reorganize and outfit my shop, so one of the first projects on my list was to make this awl. I had kept an old piece of yew wood from a bow build ages ago and it turned out to be the perfect piece for this handle. Enjoy the video!

How's she goin'? That awl turned out really nice. Was that shellac or wax you applied to the handle near the end?

Hi Mike, thanks so much for the comment. That was a beeswax, cocoa butter and coconut oil concoction that I made up. It works nice on applications like this.

@@adelkeryakos2641 Hi Adel...it's nothing specific...I mix a little as I go...but it is roughly 50% beeswax, 25% coconut oil and 25% cocoa butter.

Hi Mark! Yes the pointy bit is staying pointy. The parting tool and the small scraper were both shop made. I did a video on making them from some dollar store screwdrivers...they've held up surprisingly well! Look for the 50 cent lathe tools video :)
