DIY Shop Made Awl from Yew

- If you've seen any of my other videos you might've noticed that when I need an awl I either use a round file or a drywall screw...neither of which is ideal. I decided in 2020 to reorganize and outfit my shop, so one of the first projects on my list was to make this awl. I had kept an old piece of yew wood from a bow build ages ago and it turned out to be the perfect piece for this handle. Enjoy the video!

How's she goin'? That awl turned out really nice. Was that shellac or wax you applied to the handle near the end?
Hi Mike, thanks so much for the comment. That was a beeswax, cocoa butter and coconut oil concoction that I made up. It works nice on applications like this.
@@StanCrafted Thanks for the info. It sure made it look good!!!
@@GrampiesWorkshop Thanks!
@@StanCrafted
Is it possible to give us the ratios? Thanks a million!
@@adelkeryakos2641 Hi Adel...it's nothing specific...I mix a little as I go...but it is roughly 50% beeswax, 25% coconut oil and 25% cocoa butter.
Hello my friend. This is a very good idea. Tree color and pattern are also great. A nice handle. You are also skilled in wood turning work. congratulations. Thank you for sharing. Great greetings. Yours truly.
Thank you so much, my friend, your support means a lot to me.
Fine woodwork and beautiful result 👍👍👍👍👍
Thank you! I’ve been very happy with it so far.
YEW AWL di a great job. That was a ton of fun to watch. I bet you that you could easily make stick shift knobs and sell them for a decent profit at a craft fair! Awesome as always, sir!
Hmmm...I drive a stick shift...you might've just given me an idea for a future project! Thanks as always, my friend.
Very nice Stan, always great to see you do your thing.
Thanks so much, I appreciate your support of my videos.
Hi my friend. I watched a great video. You made a great product. the turning part was very nice. I love their turning work. it was a very nice video with everything. Thank you very much for your tutorial sharing.👏👏👏👏
Thank you, my friend. Your encouragement over the past year has meant a lot to me.
My friend my support to you always
@@CelalUnal1 Thank you!
Very nice work 👋👏
Thank you, my friend!
Absolutely amazing! I am so excited to see all of the upcoming videos.
Thank you, Ethan. I can't wait to see what you come up with next in Makerspace either!
The wax your applied at the end make it look very nice!
Thank you...I made that with some beeswax from my wife's hive :-)
Beautifully produced video. Very professional and watchable. The awl came out really nice.
Thank you...took me far too long to make one...been using an old round file forever...sheesh.
StanCrafted lol me too. I might have to make one. I made a screwdriver in a similar manner (looked like the same piece of pipe that went over the end).
Man... that turned out great!!!
Thank you, sir. Been needing one for a while now!
Beautiful finished product.
Thanks so much!
Great looking awl
Thanks so much!
That turned out very nicely, Beautifully made video Stan 👍
Thank you, Sparky!
I’ve never never worked with yew before. Thanks for posting!
It's an interesting wood for sure. Harder than some hardwoods, but a softwood with some very tight and beautiful grain structure.
StanCrafted agreed!
nice job
Thank you!
very beautiful tool turned out
Thank you very much!
Very nice! If this was my video i would have opened with "I hope yew awl like this" 🤣🤣
Haha! That’s a great opening, Grant! Wish I would’ve thought of it 😊
Oh dear.
Very nice Stan! Your work is really inspiring.
Thank you!
That looks very nice my friend. Lovely video to watch! very smart of you to use the tape on 5:43. well done man!
Thank you so much, my friend! I was going to just push the rod through the tape, but I didn’t want to get any tape bits glued inside.
@@StanCrafted Very smart of you! thanks for sharing that, I will remember that!
Really nice tool Stan 😊 One of my favourite things to make too 😊 ॐ
There's just something about turning things out on a lathe, isn't there? Thanks for watching!
Very good 👍 Have a nice day
Thank you :-)
Stan, I really noticed the effort on the "videomaking" side. Some shoots were so good!!! You ended up with a very stylish awl!!
Thank you so much, Alberto! Always trying to get better at this and feedback is so helpful.
I would have to agree! Your video skills and editing are improving! 😊
@@stunningmisadventures That is awfully kind of you...thanks!
Nice work! I just bought a hand plane for the first time, myself. It’s a very satisfying tool to use!
Thanks! They sure are handy for small pieces that won't run over the jointer easily...or if you just don't want to turn on a loud machine...took me a bit to get the hang of using it and maintaining a 90 degree angle...but even practicing is fun.
StanCrafted exactly. It’s almost therapeutic. I put my hand plane in my car and now I’m just constantly looking for excuses to use it on wood I find. I’m going to use it this morning to plane down some rough sawn genuine mahogany
@@CommercialForest That's awesome!
Wassup Mercer, forgot I subbed to you in middle school. Then I saw you in my feed!!
Hey, how's it going? I can't tell from your channel name who this is...hope you are rocking your high school career. Stop by and see me some time!
interesting vlog my friend 👍
Thank you for stopping by!
This is true craftsmanship hand made, I cheated and bought a Ice pick
And I bet that ice pick works just as well!
Lovely result and a very enjoyable vid. Was that mini-sized parting tool a home-mader too? I enjoyed the sharpening bit! Is it staying nice 'n pointy for you?
Hi Mark! Yes the pointy bit is staying pointy. The parting tool and the small scraper were both shop made. I did a video on making them from some dollar store screwdrivers...they've held up surprisingly well! Look for the 50 cent lathe tools video :)
The best tools are the handmade tools😁
Thanks, I have to agree with you there. Even if they aren’t built to the standards of the finest tools there’s just something about using things you make yourself 👍🏼
@@StanCrafted most definitely
I just found your channel and staying tuned for more videos. If you get time please stop by Seeds and Arrows Frontier. God bless

I cheated and bought an Ice pick, but a real one would be better like that
Well...it’s a lot better than the drywall screw I’ve been using for too long now at any rate 😂
