Cherry wood branch pipe with hand tools!

- After the power company cleared some cherry trees near my house from the power lines I saved some of the wood and had an idea that I might be able to make another pipe from a trunk and a branch. This video was my process.

This is how I made my pipe. Drilling a branch is nicer than having to glue or lash pieces
I love that it’s 100% handmade with handtools. I had a similar one years ago and I miss it to this day. It really impressed me that you were able to make the entire pipe out of one piece of wood. Fantastic👍👏👏👏
Thank you so much, Robert...I appreciate the kind words.
I love that too but probably should have cut out 02:24
Stan, that was incredible. It makes you think back of how people used to make things with hand tools. You do everything so well. I think you should seriously build a home. I bet your channel would explode when they see all the things you would do when building a house!!
Argh!...Don't give my wife any ideas, Richard! Seriously...thank you for the kind words :-)
I love this profession because it is my father’s profession, he has been practicing it for 30 years, and he takes us with him to the factory and we saw all the stages that the tube went through from cutting, carving and cavity , it is also a beautiful profession that only those with good taste know, and now my father is retired, but his love for this profession is what He is still looking for a plant to revive because it has unfortunately become extinct in my country, Morocco.
Thank you so much for sharing that, my friend. I am sure your father's work would put mine to shame. I am simply a hobbyist...but, I am inspired by all people who craft things for a profession. Cheers.
@@StanCrafted Anything beautiful is worth sharing and commenting on, yes, my father is a fan of this profession.
I can send you some pictures from my dad's industry.
God protect you
@@ouassimachakkour4196 I would love to see pictures of your father's work!
Glad to see i'm not the only one who stands and sands or things like it.
Excuse me from Japan
This is the best art in terms of traditional Japanese aesthetics.
We make use of the grace of nature without finishing too much.
I wish I could buy this
Thank you very much for the kind comment...I really appreciate it. I have a great respect for Japanese aesthetics, craftsmanship and art. I will see if I have another branch suitable for making a pipe to make you one.
I have never smoked a cherry wood. But a uncle had one, and claimed (once burned in) a sweeter taste to the tobacco. (Borkum Riff, or St. Bruno) Thank you for sharing this very interesting video.
Thanks for the comment! I don't smoke a lot or have a lot of different pipes...mostly what I've made. I like cherry as well as any other.
Love how soothing and comforting this video is with the light music and shop sounds. Those old hand tools are sweet as well.
Thank you, I appreciate the comment...I do like using hand tools on projects when I can...it's fun, but I can't imagine try to do all of my projects that way.
Hello my friend.
The first interesting idea of 2021. The most natural pipe I've ever seen in my life. a gorgeous design. I watched with curiosity. Thank you for sharing. I wish the new year brings you health, happiness and luck. See you. Big greetings.
Thank you so much, my friend! I wish you and your family the very best in 2021! I appreciate all of your support.
Gotta say i love the unrefined look.
Like you just snapped off a branch and started puffing.
Cant think of a better way to describe what makes it beautiful other than the natural look of the pipe
Thanks so much...that natural look was just what I was going for...a fun project for sure...cheers.
This just popped up on my feed and reminded me of making my first and only branch pipe. Brought back the feeling of satisfaction I felt after finishing it. I'll be searching for the wood to make my next one very soon.
Thank you for this video!
Thank you! I hope you find the perfect branch!
That was amazing. Beautifully hand crafted.
Thank you very much.
Dear daughter of this extremely talented man: Young lady you must help this beloved dad of yours to prevail over his fears, he's afraid of overcoming his own capacities. That pipe stem should have been longer (at least the twig original length) with a rind horn mouthpiece. It's been such a pleasure watching this masterpiece your father has created. Make him keep it up if you please. You'll always be proud of him.
Greetings from Texas.
Now that was fun to watch! I've never seen a pipe being made with hand tools...super cool!
Thank you...I do get a kick out of making these things...although I usually do the stem and bowl as a two piece affair
Well done, with all my favorite tools, and a piece of tree that I just happened across, an inspiration and I thank you. Shalom
Thank you, Steven...it was a very fun project to make.
What a cool idea. I enjoyed the whole process. Ingenuity at it's finest!
Thank you very much, Timothy...very kind of you.
Very cool Stan! Love the old world hand made 👍🏻
Thanks, my man! Not sure why I like making pipes so much as I really don't smoke...but I do like it! You need to come over and take a look at the oak slab...we got a table to make!
Brother, work of art! Nicely done for sure.
Thanks so much...surprisingly...it smokes alright too!

Hi Stan - the way my grandfather used to make his pipes- he also enlarged the stem with some horn and a mouthpiece of horn. Well done.
Thank you, Anton...I bet your grandfather made some beautiful pipes...I would love to see them.
@@StanCrafted we sold mostly all of them years ago, the only things I still have are two or three ceramic pipe heads - I´ll take some shots and send it to you.

Hello! I'm from Russia, and enjoyed this video. I've had an idea of making something like this by my own hands, and this video gave me a lot of motivation and understand the process. Thanks you a lot and sorry for my bad English)))
Thank you, my friend! Your English was very good. I'm happy that you are going to make something like this...it was a fun project for me...I hope it is for you as well.
Amazing, the raw, natural look is awesome!
Thank you very much, Patrick.
Nicely done, I've made some in my time... But never out of cherry. Mostly apple or maple... The flavoring from cherry must be nice.. Love the way you champer the bowl...
Thanks so much! I enjoy making them for sure…nice quiet relaxing work. I have plenty of apple wood…I’ll have to give that a go

Hmmm that Cerry wood looks amazing!! And another pipe to cherish :D Greetings from the Netherlands,, Kitty.
Thanks again!...this was a very fun pipe to make...but a little more challenging than the first. I'm hoping to do a couple of more like it in the future if I can find the right trunk/branch combination.
@@StanCrafted Awesome
You made it . Well done
Thank you!
Enjoyed that! Something you might not be aware of - it's possible to sand bark with 600 and finer grit papers before oil or varnish is applied. Practice on some scrap pieces first - it makes an attractive finish.
Thanks so much for the tip! I will definitely try that out on my next two piece pipe.
Beautifully done mate'
Thank you very much...I appreciate that.
Just knowing how far you’ve come in such a short time on RUclips... I’m proud of you ❤️ this was so much fun to film!!

Thanks so much!
Awesome work
Thanks so much!
Cherry wood smells very nice, but I would remove the bark, because the woodworm likes to get into it, which can spoil the product
Thanks for the feedback...just wouldn't be the same without the bark though. So far...so good!
Very nice. I love it...

it was a beauty, i really want to do something like this!
Thank you very much...you should definitely give it a shot!
I love carving bowls/pipes.... I made one when I was in my 20s that was a twisted oak pipe and the girl that bought it said she felt so bad using it because she loved it so much. I made about 7 pipes for people and I think the worst thing I've ever had to do is drill a hole over 4" deep... Once you start getting into 6" or 8" pipes it gets a bit messy w/ wandering holes or rifle fluting.
That twisted oak pipe sounds really cool. Yes...drilling the stem was the hardest part for me for sure.
@@StanCrafted - It was a cutoff from a cane blank I had from a neighbor that whittled so I was lucky....
I would smoke that pipe every day. I love the design and its uniqueness. I have to try and make one soon!
Thanks so much! I think you should definitely make one...just go slow and it'll work out fine.

Lovely job, lovely vid and lovely choice of music. But where's your 'baccy? Cheers Stan and a very happy New Year to you all there.
Thank w, Mark...there’s just a wee bit of smoke in the opening shot...not really much of a smoker...but I do like making these pipes!
Thats so cool

Thank you very much...I appreciate the kind words.
@@StanCrafted is that the only one made from a branch like that?
@@gueroloco510 It is the only one that I've made like that. A few other people have commented that they've made something similar...the other pipes I've made are from two separate pieces.
@@StanCrafted I keep watching this video over and over, so I have to ask- any chance you'd make one again from cheeywood and be willing to sell it? I've tried to find a branch similar to this shape and havent had any luck. Thanks again, love the craftsmanship🔥

This was exactly what I was looking for here on RUclips! All I have are hand tools, and I have been dreaming about making my own pipe. How does it smoke?
Thanks for the kind words...I say if you want to make a pipe like this...go for it! I'm not really much of a smoker...but, I think that it smokes real nice. Thanks again
I'm going to have to try this. There's nothing like sitting on the porch in the evening, smoking good quality tobacco out of a well session pipe.
I couldn't agree with your more, Michael...good luck with the build!
I have fruitless pear trees whereby I've gathered similar branch cuts and they are sitting for a season and then I am going to make a few pipes.!
Awesome...I'd like to see them.

Thanks, Sean...always fun to find a use for scrap.
COOL!!! ...final step for me is to find some cherry tree...)))
Thanks! I believe you could also use an apple wood branch as well.
@@StanCrafted good idea... but how does it stand against the heat?
@@beastiedemon3830 I was careful to break the pipe in slowly and build up a good cake. It has stood up very well
Nice work on the pipe, and I enjoyed the quiet video. Cherrywood pipes are well known in the piping community, and they can be found on the online used market as vintage and with bark on as yours. I believe Ropp made quite a few in France. If you don't mind, is that a vintage "eggbeater" hand drill and what make? Thank you
Thank you for the kind words. Ropp pipes were the inspiration for this pipe and other cherry pipes I have made. That is indeed an old eegbeater drill. Not certain of the make...picked it up at a garage sale some 20 odd years ago for a dollar. Thanks again.
Браво!!! Хотя ,я, и не курю. мне захотелось иметь такую трубку !!!
Спасибо, мой друг. Я тоже особо не курю. Более интересный проект с обрезком ветки. Спасибо за просмотр.
next year i plan to grow my own tobacco. looks like i best make my own pipe too.
That should be a very satisfying project! Have fun with it.
I want one!😃😉
Hi Russ...Thanks. I don't have any more one piece pipes...but, I have some rustic two piece pipes that I make out of the same cherry wood. If you're interested in that shoot me a DM on Instagram or an email at stancrafted@gmail.com and I'll send you a pic of what those look like.
What is the wax mixture your applying at the end ?
It's a mixture I made of beeswax and mineral oil. Thanks
@@StanCrafted 🤝
Well done. Can you tell me what wax you put on it at the end? Thanks
Thank you. It is a combination of beeswax and mineral oil that I make myself.
Do you have to treat the inside for anything before use?
Great job
Thank you...I didn't treat the inside...just need to break it in by building up what's called the "cake". If you do a search here on RUclips for that you'll see there are many methods of doing so. I did this one by starting with a small amount of tobacco and working up to a full bowl.
This is really well made! What size drill bits did you use when making the air hole/bowl?
For this pipe I believe I used a 5/8" bit for the bowl and a 1/8" bit for the stem. Thank you
