An ASMR Mallet build from an Apple Branch

  • I saved this branch a couple of years ago when my wife pruned one of our apple trees. I had it in my mind that I would some day like to try to make a mallet out of it for using with chisels and gouges. Apple is probably not the best wood for a mallet head...but...it doesn't seem to be too bad either. Overall I really like the weight and balance of this mallet and I'm pretty pleased with it.

Haha. I was thinking Shillelagh too. This is one of your more unusual creations. Like the leather loop ....

Thanks, Dean...when I saw that branch on the ground after my wife pruned the tree...I just knew I had to try and make a mallet out of it...had to wait a couple of years to dry it out...but in the end it was worth it.

Hi Stan, That is beautiful. I love the fact you left moss on the bark as well. Brilliant. Take care Stan. Cheers, Huw

Thank you, Huw...I plan on leaving on the moss as long as it lasts. I'm anticipating needing to refinish the face a few times over the years as apple isn't the hardest wood and it is likely to get dinged up over time. Cheers

At last! A peaceful application for the shillelagh! I see you had a camera operator helping you; good job and many thanks Camera Person.

Thank you, Mark...I would love to get a black thorn stick and make a proper shillelagh some day...but for now I'll keep scrounging what we have here. The two best things about RUclips are making friends all over the world...and spending extra time with my daughters when they have time to do a little filming for me.

If Thor has Mjölnir, Then your cool hammer must belong to his cousin, the God of Wood. What is the name of that cool mallet? I really like how that came out. You always manage to bring out incredible items from the shapes of branches. This ranks up their with the pipe and cane you made!!

Thank you so much, Richard...hmmm...I hadn't thought of naming the mallet...but, I like that idea! There is something I really enjoy about the "uniqueness" of things made from wood in its natural form...not sure why...but I do.
