      So long as we can all recognize that any of us can be the snail or the caterpillar in any given situation, and that the point should be to help each other rather than pointing out that someone is a snail or caterpillar, I'm happy to endorse this video :-)

    I would love to see this as a children's book. I would totally buy this for either my children (on the unlikely chance I decide to have kids) or my sisters' children (on the more likely chance that at least one of the three of them will eventually have children). In fact, I'd probably make it my standard baby-shower gift. This is amazing and adorable and everyone needs to learn about this as early as possible so we can start changing the world. :)

    This is so cute. I just resent the fact that this had to be told in a damn fairytale of a snail and a caterpillar to invoke basic empathy for other humans. But i know it'll be effective for someone so...Go Chescaleigh and Kat!

    I love this! I’m a teacher, and this is something I can see using in my classroom. I know other teachers would too but some who teach elementary school are concerned about the fact the she says “crap” and talks about “hooking up,” which I also noted when thinking about sharing with my own young children. If the next video was a little more kid friendly in that way, that would be amazing. Still, great video! Thanks for putting it together!

    Fantastic video I will admit that for a while now I have struggled with the term "privilege", not because I don't see that it exists just I was unable to appreciate its role in my own life. As you said in another video privilege are those things we don't have to think about. Seeing this gives me greater insight into the silent privileges I take for granted each day as well as makes me regret some positions I have taken in the past. Thanks for making such a difficult topic so approachable.

      +Mark Flavin thanks for watching and enjoying! you aren't the only one who's had trouble with that word, i think when it's framed as something we've all experienced it makes it a bit easier, which was the goal of this video. thanks again!

    Another good analogy of this would be a mental condition, like anxiety (which is where I thought you were originally going). People who have never experienced anxiety do not understand why some things can just be ridiculously difficult to do for others, because that particular thing is not difficult for them; like, going to a party.
    A great little fable for remembering that everyone is different and deals with different strengths and obstacles though.

    • @chescaleigh
      @chescaleigh  9 лет назад +8

      Amanda Riviera cantankeruz I used "have a disability" as a catch all, but specifically mentioning mental illness would've been a stronger choice. my apolgoies for the oversight. i don't have much experience talking about mental illness, but it's something i'm interested in learning more about, especially since there are a lot of misconceptions and stigma surrounding mental health

    • @amandariviera
      @amandariviera 9 лет назад +5

      I wasn't trying to say you excluded it at all. I was just highlighting it as a specific example.
      I honestly think this little fable is something kids in modern society should hear. It sends an easy to understand message on perspective and personal context. :)

    • @chescaleigh
      @chescaleigh  9 лет назад +10

      Amanda Riviera ah thanks for clarifying. I really wanted this to apply to lots of different people, so I'm glad you mentioned mental illness as one area where this story applies. I'd love to see this video in classrooms, here's hoping we can create more and do just that!

    It's so nice! Thank you for making this video! It indeed helps so much sometimes to explain something by using analogies, stepping away for a minute from the intricate delusions our society has created and substituting them with something as clear and obvious as having a shell. Besides this video is so kids-friendly which I think is the best part of it for if we teach these things to kids we can be sure that we are going to construct a fairer world in the future. And of course the way this video is animated and narrated makes it even more amazing!

    This is a refreshingly nuanced fable about privilege because it acknowledges how it can be relative depending on the situation. The caterpillar clearly had the privilege when it came to getting under the fence, but not so much when it came to shoe-shopping. Unfortunately a lot of privilege discussions seem to overlook that in favor of fixating on situations corresponding to traditional hierarchies (e.g. white>black or male>female), as if the privileges never reversed in any situation.

  • @deactivated-78936

    This video is perfect! I really hope this can make people understand that privilege is not about having an easy life, it's about having SOME advantages in SOME situations. I hate when people say "I'm not privileged because I had a poor childhood and had to work for what I have!" Like, okaaaaay, but that's not really what privilege is. ;__; This video is wonderful and I really think it will persuade some people to think about it differently :D

    • @cherubicnerd
      @cherubicnerd 9 лет назад

      Hugh Jass if someone's straight,male,white,rich and able-minded/bodied then that person is "fully privileged." it's not as rare as you'd like to think. is my example "painting people as villains"?
      sorry if my comment's negative,Chescaleigh. the person just seemed like they were creating some kind of defense or excuse...

    • @chescaleigh
      @chescaleigh  9 лет назад +2

      cherubicnerd don't apologize, i don't see anything wrong with your comment. "fully privileged" is kind of a clunky way to describe someone, but in terms of "painting people as villains" i interpreted it to mean that neither of the characters was the "bad guy" and their friendship was intact at the end. it's true, straight white rich able bodied cis men are at the top of the pyramid when it comes to privilege, but i want them to enjoy and understand this content too.

    • @Rikiwizard
      @Rikiwizard 9 лет назад +1

      cherubicnerd "the person" wasn't creating some defense of excuse at all. It's just that I'm sick of seeing straight cis white "fully privileged" males getting portrayed as villains when the innocent ones are fully supportive of equality...the "fully privileged" individuals are not fully privileged if they're seen as bad people in the eyes of others. They're seen as people that perpetuate rape culture, unfit to babysit, pedophiles, misogynists etc.
      I really hate being seen as any of those things when I'm not... and many people aren't deserving of that automatic pigeon hole-ing.
      I'm not even straight cis white male myself. I'm mixed race, bi or gay (i don't even know) and male and it feels like I can't fit into any community at all, but I still get seen as the enemy.
      I mean this video just shows that everyone has their problems, even people that are seemingly perfect in the eyes of society. Some people definitely have more problems than others but it's really not fair blaming someone that was born into what they are

    • @cherubicnerd

    I'm sorry but this doesn't seem like a good comparison to me. Most people only have a problem with other people assuming they don't have problems with their own race. Meaning unless someone is racist to them or rude to them or demeaning to them, they won't have a problem. Most people's issue with White Privilege is that the concept generalizes an entire race. They're not trying to distract or shift the attention onto themselves, it's just honestly very offensive to have all of your issues devalued by the term "White Privilege". Throughout the video it seemed like it was being pushed that the Snail had a much tougher life than the Caterpillar. This however is in contrast with the other message of the video which was that you can't judge a book by its cover. Which is it? Seems to me neither the Snail nor the Caterpillar should be judgmental, yet both were. You even said at the end, "especially race", or that the only potential problems a white person could have that are widespread are disabilities or being LGBTQ. This is a big world. Everyone's suffering, sure some are luckier than others, but I do not feel like we should define that based on race. Because that sort of boxing is dangerous and racist.
    Stuff like saying "Some of them are small" while drawing the old white lady really sends the message that you don't want everyone to step into a different perspective's shoes, just white people. Like automatically being white and cis means your struggles are less. And then we're perceived as egotistical when we see that as offensive (The caterpillar I assume is supposed to represent "privileged" white people). It is offensive, every human being has problems, and you can't judge the severity of those problems by their race, sexual attraction, gender, or any of that stuff. Some white people are rich, some are poor, some black people are rich, some are poor. By adhering to these demographics it just seems like a continuation of stereotyping and "Us Them" mentality. It just doesn't seem like you're advocating for a two way street, but instead blaming one side (as if sides really exist). Saying one is automatically to blame and therefore has a duty to make up for it is the definition of racism. All humans have committed crimes throughout history, all races all religions all creeds. No need for blaming over historical injustices, even if their effects are felt today. Instead we should find solutions to these problems today, not playing the blame game or scapegoating game played by countless civs across history and the world. No one race should be responsible for fixing racism because all races are guilty of it. Once you study world history and anthropology you find out that not just Western Civs were racist, all were. I'm glad we're evolving, but we all need to evolve, not just white people. All races must throw away ethno-nationalism, and trust me, it's rampant in all races. From America to Europe to Africa to the Mid-East to India to East Asia. Racism runs rampant on all continents by all races except for Antarctica. Sad but seems to reinforce that old proverb that as long as two humans exist, conflict will. I like to believe though that we've made progress with the Enlightenment, Technology, and the recent boom in international law, global peace (far less wars than pre-1945), and civil progress. US is definitely to thank for a lot of that stuff (UN was formed in California and centered in New York, a very US funded institution at least for a while).
    I understand my opinions may be a bit controversial on this channel, but I don't mean any of them as trolls. These are my opinions based on the research I've done on the subjects, I'm open to discussion, but I do find that I have backed up my opinions with good points and I hope that people can have a respectful conversation on such complicated topics.
    TLDR: Basically, the Snail is saying "I'm not saying you have it easy, but...you do". It's that whole "I'm not trying to say this...but...I am.". Kinda undermines the whole video when the Caterpillar's initial reaction was actually justified as the Snail was judging the Caterpillar and devaluing the Caterpillar's struggles. Even basically trying to make it sound like finding shoes was laughable in comparison to snail trails. Those both seem pretty annoying to me, and either way, the Snail assuming the Caterpillar's problem's were small undermines the entire video's supposed point.

      At no point of the video is the term "white privilege" mentioned. If anything, the video acknowledges that everyone has struggles: the snail has a shell and the caterpillar has countless feet. The small vs big struggles is a visual gag, you don't have to look too deep into it. Personally, I saw the character as a little girl not a granny.
      The reason why we need to mention race is because it is an important factor in a society such as the American one. A society that was based on slavery and segregation and that still experiences the ripples of these institutions. Yes, race is not the only thing but no one tells poor people talking about their challenges to shut up because they risk dividing people. Poverty and social class divide society. So does gender. Religion. Race. And pushing them under the rug won't improve things, it will just fester. This doesn't mean that some fight can't merge together. They absolutely can.

      @@_blank-_ Well the way I've interpreted this video is a statement on white priviledge, maybe I'm wrong, but that's what it very much seems like to me. It seems like it's trying to say that "White people, we know you have problems, but ours are always way worse and you need to accept that". That's the message it seems and I don't like that message, it's condescending and somewhat racist to people just cause they have white skin.
      "A society based on slavery and segregation". Um...not more than most nations. Most countries in history had more slavery and segregation than the US, and less frameworks for growth of further rights. The US founders specifically wanted the citizens to evolve the system over time, and knew very well things like Slavery would come into conflict with the new revolutionary ideas. These ideas were new, this is important. Everyone gives them shit for not creating some 2010 super woke society back in 1776, seriously? People really need to read more history. Until 1776, there were no real rights. Sure a few English nobles had some rights, maybe some Frenchmen, but the vast majority of the world was ruled by Absolutists, West African/Islamic Slavers, and Feudalists. America came in and changed everything, and people want to give shit for not immediately overcoming 100,000 years of separation, migration, and warfare between countless ethnicities? Like of course it'll take time, it took time for the vote to expand to all males, then to all colors, then to all genders. Nice thing though is that our nation has generally been at the forefront of this progress, so instead of being demonized for our history, we should be proud. Our collective ancestors won the Civil War, our ancestors abolished slavery and along with UK/France were the first to put pen to paper and choose to ban archaic practices. The very fact that you act like America was some super slave state is exactly what I'm worried about, propaganda has already convinced the masses of these half-lies and historical inconsistences. They talk about America all the time while ignoring Brazil, France, China, Mughals, and the Ottomans. America was way ahead of these guys in terms of moral, ethical, and social development. America and Great Britain led the charge against slavery, and did so for the first time in history out of ethical and philosophical reasons, rather than pragmatic ones like the reason the Islamic Slave Trade ended, because it had to, not because they believed it was wrong.
      Poverty does not have to divide society. I believe in a future where we can easily have two major classes split into 6 subgroups, with the poorest people being lower middle class, and only because they aren't as ambitious as the higher classes, a real meritocracy, where skill is rewarded over identity (race/religion) or inheritance (aristocracy/nobility). No poverty exists in this economic system as it's somewhat of an automated technology Keynesian capitalist based society. Humans don't waste time on busy work or hard labor anymore, so all jobs are either moderate or high paying jobs that Automated Robots cannot do. This way we avoid the AI problem too, by focusing Human Manpower on Thinking while focusing Robot Manpower on Physical Work/Busy Work, there's less of an incentive to invent a true AI in the first place, something we humans are not ready for yet. I've thought this stuff through. Poverty can be overcome with smart economic decisions, class divisions can be dealt with by ensuring enough of the populace is at least middle class, similar to FDR and Eisenhower's strategy after WW2 but just on a larger scale.
      I'm not a conservative. I will NEVER advocate for pushing things under a rug or ignoring them, I believe we should always search for solutions to problems relentlessly. I just don't think Race is the reason African Americans are suffering today. Sure it's the reason they sufferered in the past, and because of generational trauma and inheritance this has led to problems. But once again, the solution to that is a economic one, not a racial. Equality of Opportunity has already been achieved for a while now, going further means you're going to have Equality of Outcome, which is evil and wrong. A good example is Affirmative Action. Two kids, white kid has slightly higher grades, but the other kid, is black, so he gets in instead. Not fair. Are you going to tell the white kid he doesn't get to have a good life in the future because of something some white people did a long time ago, people he's probably not even related to? Good luck with that. Point is, never go for equality of outcome, it's a bad way to achieve your goals. You want all Americans living peacefully and prosperously, so do I. I just don't think focusing on race will achieve it. Same applies to religion. Sure these problems exist and I won't ignore it, but as far as I'm concerned its actually the back/forth blame game that causes the division problems. It's people demonizing the other side, or religions demonizing each other. To me, the best solution is to ignore these crazy supremacists and fundamentalists and aim for the core reasons something is happening. Stop going for the symptoms, go for the cause. The Cause is called the Fall of the American Golden Age. In the 50s/60s our growth was unprecedented and more people were entering the middle class than ever. It almost looked like there was about to be no more lower class, no more poverty. Sadly this didn't happen, and we experienced decline that has continued to this day. If we were to radically reverse this decline, and do so in a way that prioritizes putting money in the average citizen's hands rather than big corps, we could really solve almost everyone's problems.
      I'm not ignoring any of the problems. I just refuse to scapegoat and demonize people by pretending this is all caused by "White Priviledged" or racism. No, this is caused by logical traceable economic problems, this is caused by chaos theory, and it can be solved with math, not blame games. Not teaching white kids to hate themselves, because white people aren't holding anyone back anymore. If someone is poor today, it's because it's hard to stop being poor in today's America, the American dream died, if we want poor people to rise up to the Middle Class, we need to bring it back. At the end of the day, racism is caused by fear/segregation. If there were no "white" or "black" or "latino" communities, but instead just "American" communities, we'd all be better off. So while I don't advocate for ignoring reality or it's problems, I do believe that advocating for unity and a prioritization of our American identity is best for solving these problems. Only together can we solve economic problems facing all races (lots of poor while people these days too btw, especially in the Mid-West, so many jobs just disappeared). It's best to acknowledge race exists, but also do our best to transform it into nothing different than hair or eye color, because at the end of the day, it's not really that different from hair/eye color differences. I just think overly obsessing over idenity is ethno-nationalist in nature (Mustache Man's ideology). SO it's especially odd that identity politics mostly comes from more radical Liberals these days. Churchill did say the next fascists would be anti-fascists I think. Makes sense, you call your self the enemy of darkness, nobody would suspect your own darkness so they get away with it, I think this is how/why groups like Antifa or SJWs have been acting all ethno-nationalist and fascist these past few decades. I say we stop obsessing over identities and priviledged and simply unite together to enact the change we all so desperately want. Apart and divided and arguing which race did what will not solve our problems, being united and working together to create common sense (almost mathematical) solutions to OUR (The American people)'s problems. That's my real wish. That one day, nobody will see each other as different races, just Americans, and eventually, for the whole world just "Humans". Why can't we all just have Sapien pride instead of black pride or white pride. Sapien Pride is where its at. it's the only identity that we humans all truly share.

    I really enjoyed it until you got to the part of linking people's identity to their sexual perversions. Its like making out as if somebody that is a pathological liar or a psychopath or a narcisist or a sick child moleator, is just some odd thing about somebody to be embraced. Sin needs to be repented of and sometimes the root goes deep, I get that, but that is really a far cry from actual differences in how God made us and meant for us such as race, abilities, personality traits/types and IQ. In my view that really messed up what could have been a really nice video to share with friends.

Her recent attack on Rupauls Drag race angered some people and she just assumed they where all "white gays" as if that's a bad thing. She has been really rude on Twitter with me also.

    So why doesn't the snail just go over the top of the fence? Instead of complaining about something it can't do why not act on the unique skill set it has to accomplish the task at hand.I mean this snail is capable with interspecies communication not to mention it has the mental capacity to watch movies, arts and crafts, and be able to make cosplay outfits with out hands, climbing a silly little fence would be trivial. What if they went around to the other fence and there was no hole? Is the snail shit out of luck? Or would there be a conspiracy that there fences systemically oppress snails?
