Winch Mounts & Sheet Metal - Tracked Amphibious Vehicle Build Ep. 14

  • This time I'm fabricating mounts for the 12 V winches and finally start the sheet metal work on the tracked amphibious vehicle. To achieve the rigidness and structural soundness of the winch mounts I'll have to support the mount plates from various angles with rectangular steel tubing. Yes, I'm welding on more steel and it is waaayyy tooo heeaavyy for some people but I'll bet it'll float like a boat when it's finished. :) That's some backyard engineering right there - hardly no math ever used and eyeballing things most of the time. That has to make a real engineer's skin crawl. And that shows we're in a right place - a place that is playful and interesting. This steel frame, or chassis, is now almost finished to the point where I can slap on the rest of the sheet metal which is thinner, thus lighter than the 2 mm sheet I used for the bottom and the leftovers turned into the rear corners of the tub in this video. I'm welding on two winch mounts which means I'm gonna install two winches too. You know these times when you think you're going to pin your ATV straight through a mud hole and it doesn't happen... Instead you're stuck, you can get out one way and instead you're pointing the other way. Thus a rear mounted winch would be helpful. At the same time I really hope I don't have to ever use it. The front one on the other hand will serve most of the time as a snow plow lift in the winter time. Can't wait till the vehicle is finished and for the first test rides (and break downs). I bet you can't too. I'm gonna continue the build next week and new video on next Friday! Stay tuned!

    The way I see it.....who cares if it floats.....you are enjoying your time building this toy.....if it floats, it floats.....if it doesn't......you can add pontoons to make it float. those that are complaining that it won't float.......when they build their own....they can spend the extra for aluminum and try to weld it.....or they can go REALLY expensive and build with carbon fiber.....I think you are doing a GREAT job. keep up the good work.

    For only using that Plasma twice, you did pretty dang good there Donn. And about looking and thinking..... Welding is 95 percent prep, and 5 percent welding. Studying the job is just part of the 95 percent. At least i convinced myself of that. The Mrs don't believe me. Keep 'em coming. Waiting on Friday already. And it Friday!

    Just a thought for the rear axle grease fittings, you can extend them to a more easily reached position with pipe or hose.
    Done a lot on construction machinery. Easier it is to get to them, more often they will actually get the grease.

    Hey great job so far, just a tip on welding from an old timer, pull the gun (instead of pushing the weld) when welding from the direction it’s pointing making small cursive eeeeees and might also go down a size in wire that way the weld comes out flat but still fully penetrated and you won’t have to spend precious time grinding. 👍

  • @Mikefestiva
    @Mikefestiva 4 года назад +1

    Haha I like the mustered dare 😂 I find it funny how people always make comments saying things like “it will never float” but I’m sure they have never calculated the floatation. Some people just like to troll!
    I’m sure you have worked out it’s displacement of water and know about how much floatation it will have. One gallon of water weighs 8.34 pounds, even if it ends up being 500 kilograms 1102 Lbs it would need to have a inside volume of 132 gallons to stay afloat, I’m sure it’s probably got around 250 gallons of volume this means it should have around 2100 Lbs of floatation. Your doing a great job! Keep up the great work my friend 🙂

    So far great winch set up. The only thing I would have done different is done is make a receiver hitch to attach the winch to and then it can be installed into reese hitch. This way you can put in a bunch of different points with a drop in pin from the top. ( this way the receiver hitch can slide in to a sealed hole in the frame and a pin can be dropped from the top ) This way you can use these points for a hitch as well as other anchor points. The winch wires can be connected via a quick connect type system.
