Winch Mounts & Sheet Metal - Tracked Amphibious Vehicle Build Ep. 14

- Опубликовано: 28 сен 2024
- This time I'm fabricating mounts for the 12 V winches and finally start the sheet metal work on the tracked amphibious vehicle. To achieve the rigidness and structural soundness of the winch mounts I'll have to support the mount plates from various angles with rectangular steel tubing. Yes, I'm welding on more steel and it is waaayyy tooo heeaavyy for some people but I'll bet it'll float like a boat when it's finished. :) That's some backyard engineering right there - hardly no math ever used and eyeballing things most of the time. That has to make a real engineer's skin crawl. And that shows we're in a right place - a place that is playful and interesting. This steel frame, or chassis, is now almost finished to the point where I can slap on the rest of the sheet metal which is thinner, thus lighter than the 2 mm sheet I used for the bottom and the leftovers turned into the rear corners of the tub in this video. I'm welding on two winch mounts which means I'm gonna install two winches too. You know these times when you think you're going to pin your ATV straight through a mud hole and it doesn't happen... Instead you're stuck, you can get out one way and instead you're pointing the other way. Thus a rear mounted winch would be helpful. At the same time I really hope I don't have to ever use it. The front one on the other hand will serve most of the time as a snow plow lift in the winter time. Can't wait till the vehicle is finished and for the first test rides (and break downs). I bet you can't too. I'm gonna continue the build next week and new video on next Friday! Stay tuned!

The way I see it.....who cares if it floats.....you are enjoying your time building this toy.....if it floats, it floats.....if it doesn't......you can add pontoons to make it float. those that are complaining that it won't float.......when they build their own....they can spend the extra for aluminum and try to weld it.....or they can go REALLY expensive and build with carbon fiber.....I think you are doing a GREAT job. keep up the good work.
For only using that Plasma twice, you did pretty dang good there Donn. And about looking and thinking..... Welding is 95 percent prep, and 5 percent welding. Studying the job is just part of the 95 percent. At least i convinced myself of that. The Mrs don't believe me. Keep 'em coming. Waiting on Friday already. And it Friday!
This is one of my favorite best diy huge project that i love, no bullshit in between, just pure crafting!!! I cant wait to watch the vehicle rolling 👍🏼😎🇵🇷
No fake drama, no Whooping...
Outstanding as all his work but this build is most inspirational. I so enjoy watching him turn a pile of old steel into what is art to me. A very talented and blessed young man he makes everything he determines that needs to be done interesting from very simple project to this masterpiece.
Thank you for the kind words and for watching the videos. I really appreciate it!
Just a thought for the rear axle grease fittings, you can extend them to a more easily reached position with pipe or hose.
Done a lot on construction machinery. Easier it is to get to them, more often they will actually get the grease.
The body panels become an intricate part of the bracing...I like it!
And also best wishes to the man who gave you the plasma cutter. Whomever you are sir you are a gentleman of the highest order!
It is incredable what you are building. Fantastic!!! I look forward to your new video next Friday.
Hey great job so far, just a tip on welding from an old timer, pull the gun (instead of pushing the weld) when welding from the direction it’s pointing making small cursive eeeeees and might also go down a size in wire that way the weld comes out flat but still fully penetrated and you won’t have to spend precious time grinding. 👍
Haha I like the mustered dare 😂 I find it funny how people always make comments saying things like “it will never float” but I’m sure they have never calculated the floatation. Some people just like to troll!
I’m sure you have worked out it’s displacement of water and know about how much floatation it will have. One gallon of water weighs 8.34 pounds, even if it ends up being 500 kilograms 1102 Lbs it would need to have a inside volume of 132 gallons to stay afloat, I’m sure it’s probably got around 250 gallons of volume this means it should have around 2100 Lbs of floatation. Your doing a great job! Keep up the great work my friend 🙂
That plasma cutter is slick! Looking awesome!
Coming together little by little and looks great. 👍👍👍
Yup, veeeery small piece at a time.
I’m here early, but because I am loving this project. You are a great inspiration for me to get off my ass and do stuff.
Great to be able to motivate! 😉

:D Pretty good! :D
I see you're here from binky too😉😁
@@blasebermea3493 I thought of Binky as well when he pulled out the cardboard. Love this series.
Great job. I am at least three times your age and can not work on the floor like you do any more.

I Love CAD. And the template material is free. (Unless you get it from U-Haul).
I wish I could weld half as good as you!!! Love your shop also!
Me too
It would be great to have a shop like that
This is real ASMR. I mean these videos are just amazing and even seem to get longer every friday. I love your videos!
Plasma cuter arive at the best time , great work !
I just love what your doing! I too can hardly wait for the maiden run.
You seems played Tetris a lot in the childhood 🙃 Cool projects, nice videos, great work! Edu!
Amazing , finally you got a plasma cutter and probably the best brand in the world
There’s one thing I do know. When you look away from the welding with no mask you don’t have to close your eyes. 😁. Keep up the good work 👍🏻
Мне не терпится посмотреть конечный результат.
Хорошая работа.
Как всегда, immer wieder like.
You need a video of all the crazy awesome tap handles you have!
😁
I got warn out just watching you. Great job.
Keep it up Junior, it's coming along great. Top job
G’day Don bloody good effort, there certainly is a lot of fabrication involved but with all that cross bracing it will be strong. Good idea with mounting the winch always good to have, Used mine on the front of my 4x4 every now and then and it got me out of some scraps, I’m enjoying watching it come to shape good one mate kind regards John.
Bonjour Donn!
Hello Donn!
When you make your cut with the plasma cutter, you can maintain your guide with small magnets.;)
Your welding ist beatiful.
that plasma cutting man!! Sharp, like drawing with a 0.5mm pencil! Very well done!
Je me félicite de m'être abonné à votre chaîne ! Je regarde depuis le début ! Vraiment du beau travail , et c'est fait intelligemment , bravo! ! Hâte de voir le prochain

Good Job Donn !
While I want to see the final product and test drive very soon I am really enjoying the build 👍👍
Don't worry, I like to work with steel. Once this project is finished new ones are lined up already in the to-do list! 😉
All of this **really** puts into perspective my little pop-riveted sheet-metal box in high-school metalwork back in the '70s........... :)
Thanks Donn! 🎅🏻👍🏻🇫🇮
Loving the plasma cutter 👍
Me too!
your love with your anglegrinder has somewhat cooled off cheers from Germany
you have a very great job
What a great project I wish I had my own metal shop to do this I'm learning a lot feel like I'm in metal shop again
This is so damn good! Can't wait to next episode! Love your craftmanship and No bullshit videos!
I don´t see the time to see it working, spectacular your work congratulations from Colombia
Looks friggn awesome, man. Cant wait to see it fully tubbed out!
Bonjour c du très tres bon boulot de métallerie 👍..... Stéphane de FRANCE ..
De quel coin est tu ?
I'm watching you weld next thing I know I'm watching old people talk about ozampic? Commercials? What the hell? Lol Good video!
Bills have to be paid somehow. 😀
Nice job
Loving these videos. Can't wait to see it going.
A system we use on equipment at work all grease ports are routed with a hose to a plate and all the greaserts on that then you also don't accidentally forget or miss one
Felicidades una herramienta nueva para el taller . Acá seguimos al pie de la letra el proyecto saludos de buenos aires Argentina
Hi greetings from Poland
Man of many talents
Fantástico, gran trabajo, maravillosa serie.
Adelante, que será un vehículo para admirar.
Un saludo.
I love it looking forward to more
You amaze me every time !😊
So far great winch set up. The only thing I would have done different is done is make a receiver hitch to attach the winch to and then it can be installed into reese hitch. This way you can put in a bunch of different points with a drop in pin from the top. ( this way the receiver hitch can slide in to a sealed hole in the frame and a pin can be dropped from the top ) This way you can use these points for a hitch as well as other anchor points. The winch wires can be connected via a quick connect type system.
Keep up the good work man
When this project started I thought you were pimping the Argo with car parts... You have freaked me out multiple times only with this build lol Doing a sweet job
Boxing the corner of your machine like that really improves structureral strength and rigidity.
Good job bro
I bet you love having/using the plasma cutter, feels like a world of difference I bet!
Awesome!! It's really taking shape. These idiots commenting about weight don't understand 2 things: Our man Donn knows what he's doing, and the principle that buoyancy equals the weight of the water displaced. Many many vessels are made of steel because of that principle!!
this is moving along nicely can't wait for the next video you get a lot done in the 7 days between episodes
All the work in one video is done from Monday to Thursday / 32 working hours or so. I edit the video on Friday, render it and upload it and prep for the release. It consumes the whole Friday which takes 14 hours maybe. Then I relax in the weekend. 😉
I like your CAD work. (cardboard assisted drawing .)
Damn good job
Просто гений, гениально.
Great work!
Really great work, you are inspirational; I want to build one now.
Good Work Sir

This is getting freaking exciting at this stage. I so look forward to the next video.
Thanks for posting.
It is getting exciting for me too, it's a pleasure watching the sheet metal going on the tube frame.
Очень приятно смотреть, на аккуратное исполнение.
You are very good at welding work.
Is this your profession for a living ?
Love ur builds iv always wanted to build one of them tracked vehicles
I've always liked tracked vehicles of every sort. Building one is a pleasure! 😉
A- Z 💪👌🛠️ pěkná práce
Got that plasma cutter just in time for the sheet metal work! Looking good! btw nice shop.
Yes, I thought that too. Getting plasma working was definitely at the right time.
Looking good *thumbs up*
Gosto muito de assistir esses vídeos
Very nice job. Like ever jejejeje.
Plasma cutters are a very good invention.
The next step is a TIG welder.
Я думаю сверху надо лючёк сделать, работа выше всех похвал.
Bonne idée les gabarits en cartons 👍👏🇷🇺
Very Cool!
How weight can each winch handle it will float i bet on it great job donn😎👍😎👍
Во всех трубах нужно сделать отверстия для слива воды с пробками, зимой замерзшая вода порвет трубы.
OMG 😱😱😱😱😱😱 very very nice Bro ...........
оч круто получается, быстрее бы тест увидеть и вообще интересно посмотреть как будет выглядеть полностью собранным, автор ни слова не говорит в своих видео, поэтому не знаешь чего ждать, интрига блин!

Dang your meticulous! This thing is going to be a tank! Need a BFG1000 on a turret in the middle.
DONN, only question I have....how hard will it be to get to and tighten down the drive axle nuts from the inside once the sides are welded in place? Just asking. Otherwise, extremely mesmerizing! Cheers.
Wonderful!
There are still good people in this world
