creative person Damn I forgot about them. I did like Hybrid Theory, Reanimation(even though it was just remixes etc.)& Meteora but outside of that I didn’t care for anything else they did. Even though I’m not much of a nu metal fan I do respect what they did and brought to the genre though.
I think SOAD was easily the most creative and frenetic alt metal band of their era. I love how they mixed chugging riffs with Armenian dance rhythms and had some incredibly prescient lyrics full of social commentary and Eastern philosophy. Toxicity will continue to be one of my all time favorite albums. Great vid!!!
So you liked the lyrics and respect Serge but didn't like the sound due to personal preference. There's no reason anyone should be mad about that, but this is the internet so obviously some people will be haha
This band is what helped me actually think about topics like the prison system, and about poor people being forced int war for politician and the like. it was deffinelty a gateway for me into harder music but also thinking about others and topics when I was younger that I never even thought about. I didn't even know about the country of Armenia when I was young till this band, which is sad but how it goes for many in the west.
And this is exactly why I said I respect these guys. I think that's great! I found out about these topics through punk and hardcore bands so it's relative. But it's rad that band like this were actually willing to put these serious topics out there at the risk of people not giving a fuck and walking away from them. I think that's rad.
Maaan I just don’t agree with the “goofy” stuff, it’s eccentric but it’s got personality and the riffs might seem melodically “weak” but a lot of it is in the rhythm, and how it references Armenian folk music
If I'm not mistaken, Chop Suey was originally was supposed to be called "Self Righteous Suicide" but the label made them change it, so Chop Suey was the substitute, "suey" being the key hint. Love the concept and lyrics though. But yeah, I grew up with SOAD and still adore this bands body of work, Serj's solo works, not so much. Great work as always Myke!
Yeah, I read about that name change shit, too. Which is kinda goofy. They can't all the song "Self Righteous Suicide" but that can be the actual chorus of the song. Record labels are so stupid. I havne't bothered with Serj's solo stuff...but I listened to that Serart album and really liked it.
Soon as I heard him disrespect Serj's vocals I knew this was going to be a begrudging review to watch... But I dunno, its almost as if we can have differing opinions or something
Listening to your complaints, to me it feels like you might like the two albums Hypnotize and Mezmerise by SOAD more than toxicity since in those two albums alot of the songs are much more subdued, not so heavy, and Serj takes a more background approach in the vocals on some songs although it does get far more wacky in some parts so I don't even really know lol, I couldn't really tell you what you'd like or not but either way good review and thanks for the content always great to hear your thoughts and opinions.
I suggested Strap it On mostly because it was originally released by Am-Rep, which is a kick ass label. But Betty and meantime are both very likeable albums.
I just found you through the Punk ROck MBA video you were in and I'm so glad I did. This was a really interesting video. SOAD was one of my favorite bands growing up and still are. They helped shaped me into the metalhead I am. Initially I was like "WhAt dO yOu mEaN you don't like this album?" But honestly the way you explained everything, there's no reason for me to be upset. You listened and understood and gave respect where you felt it was deserved. Doesn't mean you need to dig it. Thanks for this video. More people should do this before immediately discrediting a band or genre.
System of a Down is a Nu-Metal band and there's nothing you can say that will change that. I understand that in recent years Nu-Metal has experienced a resurgence or whatever, but it is what it is.
it's resurging now because enough time has passed such that the kids who grew up with it are now adults who may be writers and what not and they are nostalgic over this
Damn Myke, was hoping you'd dig this lol, I respect your opinion though, only idiots get upset over people's opinions, I figured you'd like the conscious topics they spoke on at least, but yeah like u said in the review, it is the vocalist that people really enjoy and their creativity is out of this world. They're later work experimented with more Rock singing type vibes, like their double album Mezmerize and Hypnotize
I like your opinion and how you've expressed it and Toxicity is one of my favourite Metal albums I'm just hoping that you have the ability to appreciate creativity even when you don't like the style/tone/performance of it
Everyone is like "I totally understand where you are coming from and I respect your opinion" Not me, not even in the slightest! I have no idea how you can dislike Serj's singing, it's so versatile, full and never disappoints. Or their energetic and unconventional, yet highly rhythmic song structures and enthralling energy. Do you just dislike the genre in general? If not, what's a metal album that you prefer over this one?
When I was 15, as a Hip Hop head from the Bronx, Nu Metal actually brought me into listening to rock music. Now that I'm older I can't really stand most Nu Metal bands. However, System of a Down was always dope as fuck to me. I eventually moved on to Tool and .....oh, I wonder if you know/would be into Mar Volta?
I feel like the reason why people will/might get "pissed" by reviews like this one and Slipknot is mainly because people my age grew up with these albums. Nostalgia alone is why I find myself still enjoying this album by SOAD. In all honesty had this album been released last week id probably dislike this album a lot lol
Yeah, I feel that. I grew up on a lot of shitty music, too. Some of which I still listen to. But none of which would I get upset over someone insulting. Haha.

He's already a fan of Deftones and ISIS...not sure if he is a fan of Neurosis, but it not really out of his element considering he is a fan of the genre and related bands to them.similar bands within the genre.
Totally get your points with this album, not that I expect you to dive back into SOAD but I think Hynotize/Mesmerize tackle the "sounding sameish" and riffs thing lol. Definitely appreciate getting this review though, as I love SOAD and this is just as they finally announced a new tour, thanks!
This is my 2nd favorite album of all time. Serj tankion is also one of my favorite vocalists ever but I can see one not liking his voice. Great review brother
Actually Daron (the guitarist) himself had said in an interview that he didn't identify system with nu-metal, although they definitely have some bouncy nu-metal feel to it. Great video btw!
Hey Myke. This might be kind of random but I would love you to review the broadway album Hamilton one day. It's one of the biggest broadway shows of our generation and one of the few shows to successfully incorporate hip hop and rnb to to a musical. Daveed Diggs from the group Clipping is a big highlight on the album as he plays Thomas Jefferson and Marquis de Lafayette.
I wish you would do Cardiacs - Sing to God on here. Its a crazy art punk/progressive rock/experimental rock album that is a must listen for any music nerd.
Mike, I sincerely think you should listen to their self titled album. The dark, twisted and demented lyrical and sonic natures of that album really lend the album to Serge's vocal approach, and while Toxicity is SOAD's most critically acclaimed album, I don't think it has aged as well as many people seem to think it has for a lot of the reasons you point out here. I would highly recommend giving the self titled record a listen. You might be surprised.
I voted for the FKA Twigs album in the poll, but I think it would be cool to see you review Fiona Apple and hear your thoughts on her in the future. My personal favorite is "When The Pawn...," although all of her albums are great.
Myke your respect for music is awesome! You articulate things in a manner that I never find boring. Thanks for making vids and keeping us entertained. Love SOAD, but I can easily see why others would not enjoy them sonically. Peace Out, Myke C-Town
I was never a huge SOAD fan. I was big on their first album but this album I thought was boring and got really silly at times. They would get even sillier on their next couple albums too
This was a super thoughtful and enjoyable review! Personally, I love this album and SOAD in general, and even though you didn't care for it, I'm glad that you were able to appreciate the lyrics and how the band fit into the context of popular metal music in the 2000s.
Myke, thank you for this review. I love how you ended it with, "I don't like it. It's not trash, but it's not for me." I think that's the most respectable take you could have with an album you don't care for, because you can see the value that some people do see in it
I'm not sure how to get something reviewed, but could you do Wordsworth-Our World Today? I don't think you'll be disappointed. Dude's not a very well known artist, but he's still dropping projects.
System of a Down is an acquired taste for some. I felt the same way when I first started listening to System, but I eventually grew to love their sound.
I feel a little stupid after you mentioned it....but I always looked at Chop Suey as an "abusive relationship" song and not a take on religious hypocrisy. Really surprised I never looked at it that way. Just like the Slipknot album, spot on critiques. I know it may be a beating because you dont like the music, but I hope you do a few more nu-metal reviews. Maybe some Deftones (White Pony - I think you have done this one I'll need to look - is considered their opus but Saturday Night Wrist is heavier), Korn (Life is Peachy - they did a cover of Ice Cube's Wicked on it if that piques your interest - I would not wish upon you listening to their first album), Static X (Wisconsin Death Trip). Just to get your view on it really.
Even though I absolutely love this album and disagree with some of your opinions, I really appreciate you being honest and giving reasons behind your takes. It's a big part of why I love your channel. You don't pander to any popular consensus. You just give honest feedback. You're awesome Myke!
Respect your opinion here. SOAD is easily among my top 3-5 favorite bands ever but it'd totally understandable why they wouldn't sonically click for you. You were objective and gave them props on the writing and message. If you're willing to give nu metal another shot I think the standard bearer for that era, or at least one of them is Linkin Parks Meteora. It's easily one of my favorite rock albums period and it's just excellent. I think there's a lot more for you to like there.
System Of A Down was one of the first bands I ever got into. I have many great memories with Toxicity. This was a fair review. I appreciate the honesty and giving this a chance. For a Nu Metal album, I’d recommend trying Wisconsin Death Trip by Static-X.
I respect this. This is how I feel about Frank Ocean. I get that he is good, I get that people love it and I can understand why. However, all the things that people love about him is sonically incredibly annoying for me. I think every serious music fan has a few artists they both respect and hate at the same time.
This was actually a really great review, coming from someone who fucking loves this album. No BS in this vid. Respect for the way you get your point across
Please checkout the album Science by Incubus. Many would consider it nu Metal, but it also has jazz, funk, electronic, etc. It’s like a more accessible Mr. Bungle album. Fucking great
Aww maan thank you brother for this video and review & for getting your honest thoughts on the record. You give very honest opinions and show the artist respect as well. You really one of the best out here that gives their thoughts. You got a beautiful heart and soul. And it really comes through through your words and art. Shoutout to your Deftones lovin heart as well🙏🏽stay safe n smooth out here bro🤘🏽
Myke, I respect your opinion and value this video in the perspective that you bring to the music world. (footnote: you buggin but in the best way possible)
If you happen to read this, I might throw Candiria out there if you never heard of them. Specifically their Process of Self Development and Beyond Reasonable Doubt albums. They mix technical hardcore, jazzy hip hop, jazz fusion, and ambient music into a very unique alt metal sound. Later albums started incorporating a more melodic influence. Their Kiss the Lie album has some very Deftones sounding moments.
Very well done review! I love the concept of this series. I commend you for giving a thorough listen to something you think you won't like. I appreciate you listening closely to lyrics sung by a vocalist you don't care for. I have always liked this band. I had the fortune to see them live before they broke big and I think that has a lot to do with how I was able to get into it. I think I hear the chaotic parts a little differently because I attach them to a memory of their performance or something. You get mentioning when the vocals got intense. Are you referring to the growly parts? That's actually the guitarist's backing vocals. I always take those as a call and response that comments on how some listeners will respond. As far as other Nu Metal I would say Deftones are probably the best shot for something you might like, maybe Soulfly/Sepultura. The only other one I would suggest to be sure to check out is the first Korn. I doubt you'll like it any more than the others but it did kick the whole thing off, so it might give you perspective on the movement. I voted for and have my fingers crossed for Big Black because I'm interested to hear your take on Noise Rock. Tom Waits and Betty Davis would also be good choices. Those albums are amazing. Don't torture yourself with the Green Day. I'm not even a GD hater and I thought that shit blew. Thanks again.
I love the way you rip this album a new one while appreciating certain aspects of it. You're OK with me, Myke. BTW, I like this album a lot...but that's just me.
Check out Soulfly’s Record “Primitive.” I’m pretty sure you already know about the band Sepultura and especially the Roots record that came out in ‘96. Definitely give primitive a listen. Or check out Sevendust’s Home.
Whilst i am a big fan of S.O.A.D and this album in particular, i loved hearing your opinion. :) Maybe get onto Deftones- Around the Fur (love!) or a KoRn album?
I know Toxicity is their biggest album, but the self-titled release (their first album) is the one my metal friends always said was THE SOAD album. For me the 1st release is my second favorite behind Toxicity. There's actually a chance you may like SOAD more than Toxicity (a little more consistent in sound while still being kind of crazy & unpredictable - "Spiders" is probably the closest thing to "Aerials" on the self-titled album).
What were the other two Nu-Metal albums you listened too ? All in all, a good review, whether or not that is because I agree with it 100% or not (right down too thinking it is well produced and that Ariels is the lone high point) remains too be determined. But FINALLY someone prominent fucking said it about this album.
You should definitely try listening to a Deftones album... my personal favorites are Saturday Night Wrist and Diamond Eyes, but I'm sure most would probably suggest Around The Fur or White Pony to you. You should also give their cover of Sade's "No Ordinary Love" a listen, because why tf not? lol
Great and even-handed review. I'm a fan of SOAD's first two albums and generally like Serj's vocals. I get a Jello Biafra vibe from him combined with the theatrics of someone like Mike Patton, which I dig but clearly isn't for everyone. He is definitely on point as a lyricist though. Try any Fear Factory yet? They're nu-metal from the industrial side of things (though their first releases, Concrete and Soul of a New Machine were more like industrialized death metal) and tended to be more mature and less cartoonish/edgelordy than most other bands in this genre. Demanufacture and Obsolete are both pretty solid and might be worth your time.
Bummer that you didn't dig the sounds as much as I do, but I totally get why. If you're curious about Nu Metal but want something more cohesive, maybe try Deftones? Also, I would say SOAD, while Nu Metal, is not super representative of the genre, nor is Slipknot IMO. If you're interested in Nu Metal as a subject, you should check out Korn. I'd say they embody the genre (and basically invented it) completely, from sound to subject matter. I would also recommend checking out the recent vid on the subject by Punk Rock MBA called "What Killed Nu-Metal?". Peace!
In my humble opinion, the reason why SOAD were so big was that they weren’t a band who played with emphasis on riffs. The guitarist even stated that they didn’t write riffs, they wrote fleshed out song parts. That’s not super common in metal songwriting, which is generally writing riffs.
Guys, I'm already a HUGE Deftones fan. They're the only nu metal band I really enjoy. So you don't have to suggest them. They're already A1 to me.
Myke C-Town yeah I was going to suggest them too. Welp looks like you’ve reached the top and you can now move on from this genre lol.
@@heysoymilk what about linkin park?

Deftones is kinda a post hardcore band in their core. I gonna say they are the most experimental band in the nu metal tag
Deftones isn't Nu Metal, they're Shoe-Metal lol. Best band
Dylan McMahon ALL FACTS NO CAP ALL CAPS NIGGA!!!
They never released a bad album. Or a good album, because they’re all amazing.
Same. I love their messages, I love the great vocal chemistry, the creativity.
So you liked the lyrics and respect Serge but didn't like the sound due to personal preference. There's no reason anyone should be mad about that, but this is the internet so obviously some people will be haha
Thank you! The dudes angry in the comment section just give me something to laugh at tho.
Serj*
I just realized how this album was about a middle eastern dude talking about racism in the USA and it came out exactly 1 week before 9/11.
I meant to mention that.
A middle-eastern dude talking about racism ? Where did you pick that up ?
@@N3ukenInD3K3uken The main dude is middle eastern and he talks about systematic oppression a lot on this album
@@soberhippy8240 Serj was born in Libannon but Armenia is in Asia

This was a fair review. I didn’t really expect Myke to like the album, but I respect his opinion. At least he praised most of the lyrics.
Definitely a polarizing band. Most of the turn offs you have are their selling points for most fans. Glad you appreciated the lyrics at least.
Trout Mask Replica. It would be hilarious.

Would love to see you review any Rage against the machine album and dissect the lyrics and stuff
Honestly Serj's voice is absolutely an acquired taste and I'll never fault anyone for saying they don't like his style.
System Of A Down was one of the first bands I ever got into. I have many great memories with Toxicity. This was a fair review. I appreciate the honesty and giving this a chance. For a Nu Metal album, I’d recommend trying Wisconsin Death Trip by Static-X.
Really love your channel and honesty within
I wonder if you would have liked Hypnotize/Mesmerize since they went for a cleaner sound with those albums.
I'd love to see you review some newer nu-metal influenced stuff. Why not check out Vein's Errorzone? Great video as always
I respect this. This is how I feel about Frank Ocean. I get that he is good, I get that people love it and I can understand why. However, all the things that people love about him is sonically incredibly annoying for me. I think every serious music fan has a few artists they both respect and hate at the same time.
Pushing little albums, with his RUclips automatic, Myke likes to push the weak around
OOHH! SOAD Toxicity review :O! Will watch this. I still need to review it myself (just ratings, not on video). I love SOAD.
are you into Deftones? would love to watch a White Pony review
I still have the physical cd copy of this album
from 2001. Great album.
Sounds like a lot of gatekeeper bias
I heard you mention tool and wondered what you thought about them.
300% Density FTW
Hey Myke do you enjoy Dystopia? they were a sludge band, I thought you'd possibly like them
Very well done review!
Do you listen to Faith No More or Mr. Bungle Myke? I hear alot of Mike Patton's influence in Serj's voice.
Check out Soulfly’s Record “Primitive.” I’m pretty sure you already know about the band Sepultura and especially the Roots record that came out in ‘96. Definitely give primitive a listen. Or check out Sevendust’s Home.
Do the Serart review!!! Glad to hear you liked it
Would you do the new Sylosis album
Hi Mike C-town..
Can you please review Wilderun- Veil of imagination.
New Old Opeth.
James Bullock yup. The debut album is amazing.
I think he’d like it less. It’s definitely heavier and weirder than Toxicity (it’s my favourite as well)
What were the other two Nu-Metal albums you listened too ?
All in all, a good review, whether or not that is because I agree with it 100% or not (right down too thinking it is well produced and that Ariels is the lone high point) remains too be determined. But FINALLY someone prominent fucking said it about this album.
The Slipknot self titled since I reviewed it. And one of those Staind albums that I liked for a month or so.
You should definitely try listening to a Deftones album... my personal favorites are Saturday Night Wrist and Diamond Eyes, but I'm sure most would probably suggest Around The Fur or White Pony to you. You should also give their cover of Sade's "No Ordinary Love" a listen, because why tf not? lol
Great video - maybe the next stop will be Slint - Spiderland?
hey myke did you check out new envy album yet?
I never got into Fear Factory. So I'l add them to the list if I wanna continue this!
Your thoughts are well-expressed. How about S.C.I.E.N.C.E. by Incubus?
