Jabe, the "Tree Lady", is one of my favourites of all the characters who've appeared on an episode of Doctor Who. Not only was she written so wonderfully, but the make-up and costuming were absolutely beautiful. And, I think, especially because the actress did an amazing job. Her intelligence, and curiosity, and empathy, and courage shone through.
Yasmin Bannerman plays 7th Doctor companion Roz Forrester in some of the audio dramas (I’ve not heard them but loved Roz in the books and can imagine Bannerman plays her brilliantly!)
It's funny how u mentioned mudblood whilst rose was talking to cassandra, the actress that does her voice was zoe wannamaker who taught Harry Potter to fly his broomstick in the first Harry Potter film...
All your questions regarding the doctor will be answered in time... of course fans that had been watching classic Dr who too (60s onwards) will already know!!
Russell T Davies was (and is again) the showrunner and lead writer for this and he's fairly universally recognised as the UK's best TV writer. This is a great example of that - Ruffalo was a last minute addition due to the story under-running. 6 lines and yet you care so much for her. A masterclass in dramatic writing. Humour, character, pathos, excitement - it literally has it all.
You can see in this episode how the loss of his people has hurt the Doctor because right there at the end, he saw some of the same hurt in Rose. I think her innocence and youthful enthusiasm, and most of all her caring, are why the Doctor asked her to travel with him - he's spent enough time alone. I love Rose because of everything she is, including her faults, and how being with her might help the Doctor heal.
The voice performance for Cassandra is Zoe Wanamaker, who is a fantastic actress! I first noticed her in the first Prime Suspect miniseries, where she nearly steals the show from Helen Mirren. Her father, actor Sam Wanamaker, was the person behind the rebuilding of the Globe Theatre in London.
Also, when she was a baby, her father fled the US while under investigation by the FBI for holding communist views. Ok, "fled" might be a bit strong a word. He moved to the UK in 1950 to do a play, taking his family with him, while there he discovered that he was under investigation and in danger of being blacklisted so he decided to stay. In her Who Do You Think You Are episode, Zoe went to the US and was allowed to read through her father's FBI file (or a redacted copy of it, at least).
So glad you're enjoying my favorite Doctor! Bit of trivia about this episode: it's very much an homage to the late Douglas Adams, who wrote some episodes in the original Doctor Who series, and went on to write the classic "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" books - and the second book in the series was "The Restaurant At the End of the Universe"!
Taking Rose to watch the Earth burn was a very interesting choice as the FIRST trip.... maybe he was testing her, to make sure she was companion worthy
I think it’s because she goaded him to impress her so he goes there and doesn’t take into account how it would affect her to see her home naturally go.
I agree with all of you. At first, I think he went for it because of the wow factor and how impressive it is to go somewhere that far away and see something that crazy, but I also think subconsciously he took her there because he needed to make sure his companion understood the pain he felt for losing his world.
Just a shoutout to the comment section. Please don't ruin anything for him going forward. Even if you think it's a small thing, let him react naturally.
Thank you so much for this Chris, as someone who spent my first 8 years in the UK during the 70's, Dr. Who 'stuff' is among my basic knowledge of the universe 🤔. That makes your reaction to the show - going in cold - totally mind-bending to me. I never really thought about how much 'lore' a new watcher has to pick up through context! Looking forward to more.
I think the script for the first episode (which had a more complex job to do) was stronger than the one for this episode, but the actual implementation of this episode on screen was so much better. (That's perhaps partly because this was made in a later production block.) In fact I think this episode is a bit of an under-rated gem! The coda, with Rose watching the destroyed Earth, and the Doctor leading her back to her own time before revealing something of himself to both her and us, is just beautiful.
Oh wow… if you think this episode gave you the feels then you ain’t seen nothing yet… it’s absurd but there are certain episodes that make me cry every single time still.
It's funny you mention Harry Potter in relation to Cassandra (The "Trampoline"). The actress voicing her is Zoe Wanamaker, who portrayed Madame Hooch in the HP films (The professor who teaches the kids how to ride brooms in the first film). In fact, you'll find a lot of crossover actors between HP and DW, including of course, the next Doctor David Tennant who played Barty Crouch Jr. in the 4th film.
I've been watching "Doctor Who" here in the UK for as long as I can remember - it forms my actual first memories I have of anything, ever!! I'm loving the fact its now appealing to people of different ages and nationalities, all with different cultural backgrounds. This is a brilliant series, with real heart and soul in amongst the weird aliens, crazy monsters and "outre" imagination. Keep your enthusiasm up, and (above all) don't read any spoilers for future episodes/storylines!! 😉

There isn't a single episode with Rose that doesn't hit hard! Not only a great character, but a great actress!! I'm loving that you're loving this show.
This is one of the big advantages of the show, they can go anywhere in the universe and to any point in time.. that means anything goes, the possibilities are endless.
I'm so sorry people have been semi-spoilery in these comments, but thankfully, alot of what's being mentioned is info that would be surface level/playground stories in the UK, so most people begin the show with some portion of those knowledge bits. It does suck if you got spoiled a bit since you went in super fresh, but I don't think it's anything that will effect your viewing of the show or destroy any awesome plot threads persay :)) This is a show with many twists and turns and awesome finales, characters you don't expect to see again, lore jokes and references to creatures and places seen only once, and other things that you def are more likely to pick up on during rewatch, so it is incredibly easy to spoil even if you don't mean to and I'm sure most people here have good intentions!
oh dear... this show will make you feel ALL the things, in the most absurd situations. so excited to watch it with you. this show is very quotable and one i love is 'moisturize me!'
"Two very different episodes..." and that is one of the keys to the show's longevity; because of the basic conceit of the ability to travel to any time or place, the producers have the freedom to do whatever they like (budget permitting!). In the interests of avoiding spoilers, I'll look back to the early days of Classic Who for examples. Just in the first couple of seasons back in 1963 we visited prehistoric cavemen, a telepathic alien race, revolutionary France and ancient Rome. The tone varied from bedroom farce in The Romans, to the darkest possible recounting of history in The Massacre of St Bartholemew's Eve (spoiler, the Doctor doesn't prevent the massacre). Doctor Who included the first Western ever shot for British television (The Gunfighters) and an epic that would never be attempted today (a story in 12 parts, plus a prologue episode, The Dalek Master Plan--would audiences now stick with a three month long story?). In modern Who ('New Who') episodes can swing between light comedy to emotional stories where even the most cold-hearted (that's me) would struggle to keep a dry eye. There are reasons why we are coming up to the 60th anniversary, even allowing for a decade or so where the show was off air (although never officially cancelled).
When I started to watch the show, I always forgot, that we are travelling in time as well. So "maybe" it is not the last time, we have seen these creatures and characters (even if they died now, we can go before this time). I love how you love these episodes.

So technically that 1996 movie was what happened before the last episode, although eventually we'll get some filler episodes that happened between the 1996 movie and the 2005 series exolaining what happened to the Doctor between the two (what happened with the war).

Russell T Davies - the guy who brought Doctor Who back to us in 2005 - is amazing at tugging at your heart strings. He really has a gift for making you feel invested in what he writes. To us old fans, hearing that the Time Lords were all gone was tragic. (Well - for this fan anyways.) They were only in a handful of stories during the original 26 year run, but to find out they were wiped out in the 2nd episode of the "reboot" was just - WOW... How could he do that?! Of course, for the new fans, they're just learning about that mythology. When I first watched this story I struggled at first with Rose's reaction - how she was so upset about the Doctor not thinking about things like the TARDIS' telepathic circuits that allowed her to understand any language... I'm Brazilian and a Whovian since 2012. I've seen several people reacting, but your reaction was one of the best: curious, speculative, fun! I signed up to follow you on this journey through all the seasons of New Who, and maybe even some episodes of Classic Who xD
Each Doctor has their own share of moving speeches. Many of the companions as well. As this is a continuation of the classic episodes, there is much that is left as a given about the Doctor, yet at the same time they do a good job of filling in some of the blanks for new viewers. Something the classic episodes cover is that The Doctor didn't agree with some of the Time Lord society's views on getting involved in situations. He stole his TARDIS from essentially a junkyard. It was outdated tech for them, set to be decommissioned. He loved his homeworld, but rarely saw eye to eye with those running it.
Hello from Wales! They actually film these not far from where I live. Loving your reactions so far, I can't wait to see what you think of the later episodes because they get a lot better. Wait for Blink... Don't. Even. Blink!
I don't care how ridiculous this show (sometimes) can be, it still got the best speeches one can use in life for real. Also, I don't know how you are with feelings, and I know not everyone is as soft as I am but after watching you seeing this episode, tears will fall, not persé in this series, but one fine day, sodium chloride, NaCl and potassium chloride, KCl and H²O will fill your eyes, I'm calling it.
I started watching Who in the 80's. You are in for a treat, with so much more deep diving into the Doctors past and the time war. I really hope you enjoy it. 😊
Your enthusiasm for this show is already so wonderful. I look forward to going on this journey with you. Of Series 1, this is definitely a top tier episode. Gives us a little of a lot. RTD wrote this first season to be welcoming to a new audience. The first three episodes almost act like a sampler platter for the overall thing. That was very wise. Doctor Who is one of the most daunting shows to get involved with due to its sheer scope. Even taking on the reboot series you're still talking over a dozen seasons of TV.
More Doctor Who!!!! Woot woot! You are in for such a treat. This show has everything you could possibly need in a show. It makes me so happy to see a new Whovian in the making
A lore detail that is not a spoiler: many Time Lords have names that are not actually names, such as Doctor. This is because the Time Lords often made such a big impression everywhere that their names became terms. A Doctor is a person who knows a lot and helps people because THE Doctor helps and knows a lot. His name became a term that has an (almost) universal meaning in the Galaxy.
It should be noted there is a bit of a chicken and the egg situation here - the doctor chose “the doctor” to go by because of it’s connotations as well (and it isn’t literally his name), and thanks to time travel the chicken and the egg are both first, in this scenario
But not ALL the Time Lords. Most of the Time Lords have normal-ish names. Only the renegades that left their home planet at one point or another have names like The Doctor, The Monk, The Rani, and another that would be a spoiler so I won't say. Otherwise they had names like Romana, Rassilon, Braxiatel, Borusa, Narvin, etc.
I am so cheered that you are doing this series!!! I've not seen many reactors do Who ... but it was such a big part of my childhood, and the reboot/continuation was such a welcome appearance in my adult years :)
First down !!!! The series is surprisingly catchy, and full of genre changing scifi that has been appropriated by various other series. Also, keep an eye out for Bad Wolf references (especially w/ Rose travelling) !!!
Yes pay attention to all bad wolf signs and also- I was glad to hear you say you liked the "giant head""- he will have a VERY significant presence in future episodes!
If you stick with this show all of your questions about the Timelords will be answered (along with quite a few you didn't ask), but I won't say when or how, no intentional spoilers allowed, the journey is always more fun if you don't know where (or indeed when) you're going.
I have been loving your Doctor Who reactions! More channels need to pick this show up. But it’s been so fun watching your reactions so far please stick with it ☺️
@@CasualNerdReactions WOW, I LOVE how it seems that you've just dove straight in based on S1 even! Like others have said it has its highs and lows, but NuWho is incredibly consistent for the length of its run so far :)) My personal fav seasons are 3-6! I know you've seen Father's Day by now, but you're def still not ready for the hype and the feels of later seasons haha, trust me! And I am so excited to join you on this journey!!!❤❤
That's what it is: Feels, puns, absurdity, ...& an awful lot of running. That hit for the Classic Who after 15 years - The Time Lords are gone? Alright, we only met them, as a race, 8 times in 26 seasons but still. Time Lords didn't do what the Doctor does. They stay inside the TARDISes & take scans. They have a strict non interference policy & once exiled The Doctor to Earth for it.
Really enjoying you're reactions to WHO, so much fun to watch, and I look forward to seeing more. Wasn't sure if your aware that Murray Gold, the wonderful musical composer for New Who, includes in his very large repertory "theme" music for the main characters which you'll hear being played throughout the series. Here is a sample, and do take care. Ninth Doctor's Theme: ruclips.net/video/HyIP5nrJ8gY/видео.html
Think you’ll agree that this was a much stronger episode that the first one, and IMO, the next story is even better. This season as a whole is very strong (with really only one filler episode letting the side down a bit), and all of it is a rollercoaster of emotions with lots of sadness but also lots of joy to be had. I know you’ve already seen it by now, but can’t wait to see your reaction to episode 6!
This will be fun to see you discover a show that I have loved for forty years, classic and new. I know the answer to every question you asked near the end so I wish you a joyous journey in finding out for yourself all there it so know about this unique univers. I can't wait to watch all this with you. Cheers!
As much as I love pretty much every episode of the first series, I'm dying for you to get to episode 6. If you weren't hooked by then, this show wouldn't be for you. But, much like you, I fell in love with it from the first moment. It's fun, cheesy, and sometimes emotional.
13:21 "...with this much absurdity, had any right making me feel..." Brother, just wait til you reach the eps in the middle of the season. Imo, it has so much absurdity b/c at it's core it's a kids show, perhaps ironically I think this is actually a strength. Dr Who avoids the path of taking itself too seriously and, maybe paradoxically as a result, is able to tap into some deep rooted emotional depth.
I’d get ahead of RUclips to avoid spoilers and remember the Christmas specials and special episodes you may need a list from somebody. Also don’t google yet but the series 3 finale you’re going to have to find the original UK version as the Americans butchered and cropped and edited it for some reason and now that’s the version that ended up on streaming services around the world outside the UK.
There is/was an Excel Document "Doctor Who Unofficial Reactors Guide" that's extremely helpful for new viewers of the series. I had a copy but it's been deleted off my hard drive. Might still be online somewhere?
Great info, thanks! I currently am at episode 8, but am trying some things next month to get a little further ahead. I have a very extensive guide, although I haven't decided how thorough I'll be with all the spin offs and minisodes. (I mean I'll watch the minisodes, but not sure they're worth a reaction). I have season 3 on blu-ray so maybe I'll watch that version for the season 3 finale instead of the streaming version. Or at least compare them.
@@CasualNerdReactions it’s blasphemy but most of the minisodes really aren’t important. They’re usually just little bonus clips and Doctor who content released for charity events in the UK, some slightly refer to the plot, some are daft, funny, some are made just for the RUclips channel as little extra nuggets. They’re good to watch at some point but there’s no real ‘you MUST watch this mini episode it’s vital’ until you get to around series 7, and then people will make it well known what you have to watch and in what order. As for the spin offs, I’d watch them definitely at some point. Around series 1-5 ish, they’re very much part of that era, they’re not vital but if you watch all 13 seasons of Doctor who and then go back to the spin offs, they’re set in a completely different era of the show that you may have forgotten about by then, world building and lore wise. One of the spin offs is very much for kids but grows quite a lot to be something quite special as the audience matures. And Series 3 of one of the spin offs is my personal favorite thing ever that the whoniverse has produced. So they’re worth it, but you’ll find out in time whether you want to put the effort in to those spin offs as Doctor who goes on and you find out a bit more of what they actually entail.
@@binrotheheretic8174 there aren’t though really, I was never lost in the plot for not seeing those minisodes. They’re just extra nuggets that you can either watch or not
I don’t think it’s really a spoiler, though it is touched on some later, that Doctor is a title he chose and is unique to him. When they reach a certain age time lords choose their own name/title. I don’t know why but I love Cassandra. The series I wouldn’t say ever stops being absurd yet there are some more serious episodes and various episodes that hit you in the feels.
The Face of Boe... (a.k.a. that Big Giant Head)... will be making a few guest appearances throughout the series as a whole. It will also hold some interesting surprises as well. ~ But... No Spoilers. ~ Just enjoy your ride through Time & Space... and all points in-between.

Something the classic episodes cover is that The Doctor didn't agree with some of the Time Lord society's views on getting involved in situations.
He stole his TARDIS from essentially a junkyard. It was outdated tech for them, set to be decommissioned. He loved his homeworld, but rarely saw eye to eye with those running it.
you are going to love this season, its the best season of the reboot by far, but you will enjoy the first 4 seasons like we did (my husband and i )
Hello from Wales!
Just found this channel from this series. Welcome and hope you enjoy the journey.
More Doctor Who!!!! Woot woot!
You are in for such a treat.
This show has everything you could possibly need in a show. It makes me so happy to see a new Whovian in the making
Your reactions to DW are Life Affirming. Ta, for uploading to RUclips. 💟
The psychic paper is a very old school reference from the third doctor (I think, maybe even second).
Man! the amount of (quality) content you put out in such a short period of time is impressive! 👏
That’s a fantastic detail! Thanks.
This show will make you feel a lot while still keeping all of the absurdity.
I am so cheered that you are doing this series!!! I've not seen many reactors do Who ... but it was such a big part of my childhood, and the reboot/continuation was such a welcome appearance in my adult years :)
I didn't realise it before, but the ipod reference is already dated, and yet remembered in the year 5 billion.😊
This show will make you laugh and cry, sometimes in the same episode.
I’m quite excited to strap in for 13 seasons with you!
Well by the time I get there we might be on 16 or 17c but let’s go! (I’m brainstorming how to move a little quicker as we speak)
It will go fast though... enjoy the ride.
Doctor Who is a brilliant mix of Sci-fi/drama/emotion! Can’t wait to see what you think of episode 3! (It’s one of my favourite Series 1 episodes)
First down !!!!
The series is surprisingly catchy, and full of genre changing scifi that has been appropriated by various other series.
Also, keep an eye out for Bad Wolf references (especially w/ Rose travelling) !!!
I first noticed in episode 4 and I think have caught it in every episode since 😅
On rewatches it blows many of us away how many things were always there and we missed them the first time.
Yes pay attention to all bad wolf signs and also- I was glad to hear you say you liked the "giant head""- he will have a VERY significant presence in future episodes!
@@timothymaki5378Just a massive spoiler. Nice one.
Yessssss I'm so excited you liked the first one. Discovered you from it and excited to see more!! ❤
Zoe Wanamaker is also in _Shadow and Bone_ and is Ariadne Oliver in the David Suchet Poirot series.
And Miss Hooch in Harry Potter 1! Seen her in the theatre a couple of times (once alongside Peter Capaldi) - she's great.
But it’s been so fun watching your reactions so far please stick with it ☺️
I’ve already purchased 8 seasons on Amazon so definitely not stopping anytime soon.

Love your reactions, sir! Was so excited to see that you're tacking Doctor Who! It's one of my faves :)
Good reaction. I'm glad you're doing this show. At some point, you may want to check out _Good Omens_ also.
This was the episode that hooked me into Doctor Who. Best show ever.
I have been laughing so hard. I love your reactions! Welcome to the Whoniverse! You are now a Whovian!
Thank you for watching Doctor Who
This will be fun to see you discover a show that I have loved for forty years, classic and new.
I feel like the show REALLY started with episode 6. So good. 👏
Great speeches & great characterisations, courtesy of head writer & show runner Russell T Davies...
His other TV creations are worth your time 😎
So pleased you are reacting to Who. You are in for a treat and a wild ride
13:21 "...with this much absurdity, had any right making me feel..."
Brother, just wait til you reach the eps in the middle of the season. Imo, it has so much absurdity b/c at it's core it's a kids show, perhaps ironically I think this is actually a strength. Dr Who avoids the path of taking itself too seriously and, maybe paradoxically as a result, is able to tap into some deep rooted emotional depth.
OMG I own that jukebox! Mine is currently broken, but it looks like the exact same Wurlitzer.
You mean that iPod 😅
Oh, you're going to feel lots :-)
Well, if you're a plant, air from an animal is great.
The under current of sadness and anger.
It has no right to make you feel, but it will. Again and again, it will . . .
I can't wait to see more of this.
It gets so much better!❤
Stick with this show, there will be highs and lows but if you get into it you will not regret it! :-) It's simply amazing.
I cant wait your reaction about Midnight part.
I think for new viewers Born again at the end of series 1 is very helpful though and there are other minisodes before series 7 that are important.
@@binrotheheretic8174 there aren’t though really, I was never lost in the plot for not seeing those minisodes. They’re just extra nuggets that you can either watch or not
Rose should have dropped in on her mom after the chips.
Love the tree so much!
Welcome to one of the best tv shows made 💯😁😁
Moisturize me!!! 😂
I feel fine.
MOISTURIZE ME 😂
Oh I just remembered, the giant face, the Face of Bo....oh dear *weeps
You're not alone.
❤
Genesis 8: 22
Moisturize me!
That is a spoiler in itself.
Considering this programme, it's incredible how little people understand the concept of spoilers.
Eventually we learn what happened to The Doctor’s planet. Later on, we learn what REALLY happened to it. You’re in for quite a ride, Chris.
