  • But what happens if I don't catch her?
I've been a big fan of Shovel Knight and its music for awhile. While most of the series' pieces are very energetic and fast level themes, this tune stands out as a rather dramatic and emotional outlier within Shovel Knight's soundtrack. The piece plays when Shovel Knight dreams of his lost companion, Shield Knight, falling from the sky as he struggles to catch her among an onslaught of foes. Though Shovel Knight is largely a comedic and rambunctious joyride, these dreamy segments within the game manage to hold some emotional weight, and this piece certainly contributes to it.
As I began to arrange this track, I immediately gravitated towards a smaller, jazz combo-like group of instruments. I then, with just as little deliberation, thought that a flugelhorn would sound amazing as the lead instrument. I've always loved the sound of the flugelhorn, and decided to have ‪@giocko‬ help out! As has been the case with many of my collaborators, I met him at MAGFest back in January. Having driven to the event, I had the luxury of bringing whatever I needed in my car without having to pay for carry-on fees that would come with a flight. Because of this, I ended up first meeting Gio in order to lend him the keyboard I'd brought to the event for his band to use in their set. Anyways, he did a great job, and I knew I made the right choice having him join in on such a wonderful instrument.
I also arranged this piece, aside from the intro, in 6/8, rather than the original 4/4. After I had the idea, I realized that I had been listening to Route 113 from Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald a lot, which is also in 6/8. I imagine this is where the inspiration came from. Regardless, I played with the melody over a 6/8 drum track and it ended up working surprisingly well. Changing the time signature of a song, even when the arrangement didn't put up much of a fight, was definitely a big challenge for me, and it gave me a new appreciation for people who experiment with far crazier time signatures in their own arrangements. The time signature allowed me to come up with a lot of fun piano and bass rhythms that I'm really happy with. As a whole, this is the furthest I've ever taken a piece from its original composition, and I hope you all like it!
