Growing up with Newfoundlands, as well as lover of large breeds, I have never understood the "too big" thing. Many large breeds are totally chill, non-barkers, and fabulous family pets, just as you have seen here. Yes, they slobber, but to me the only down side is that they do not live long.
Oh there’s a tonne of reasons, the drool for some, the fur/hair on everything, the grooming, the far greater cost, and just the physical size they take up. I’d never have a dog that I didn’t have room for it to really run whenever it wanted to, just for me personally walking on a lead isn’t enough. Luckily I have all the room in the world for my monster fluffy dog and don’t care about the other things. I can fully understand why not everyone could handle or want a huge animal like that though.
@Darth Traya Agreed. Saddens me what has been done to this breed, like the newfoundland they are victims of 'teddybearification'. They have been bred ever bigger and more extreme. The head is almost brachycephalic now with all the health issues that entails and their coats are too long and inappropriate for a mountain climate (would retain water). The modern saint bernard is a far cry from their ancestors sadly with too much loose skin and loose eye rims.
I had my beloved Bernard Zoe for 11 years. She was a beautiful 1/2 mask, mahogany puppy that no one wanted. Grew up to be 150#. One of the best fur babies I ever had!
I had a St Bernard named Beethoven a 225 pound male, not fat but MASSIVE. He was the sweetest most loving dog ever. It has been 25 years since he left us but I still miss him to this day. When walking him, he drew a crowd EVERYWHERE I went. People wanted to pet him, take pictures with him. He was always happy to meet new people, he loved children.
As an owner of a 5 year old St Bernard I can’t overstate how gentle and calm they are. I had a German Shepherd before and she was always barking and super aggressive to strangers and other animals to the point she couldn’t be off leash. My 150 lbs Saint Bernard got attacked and bit by an off leash chihuahua in my yard. She was so confused about why it didn’t wanna be her friend . Also, she doesn’t bark without a serious reason. I also had a Golden Retriever and he was big but still 6lbs lighter... I actually had both at the same time and even though he was 13 years old and she was 2 he was the one pushing her to play all the time. Most people don’t realize those medium size dogs are WAY more energetic and eat more than Giant breeds who are content leaning against you rather then running laps..

One of the best experiences I’ve ever had with a dog was owning a Saint Bernard Oliver. He was magnificent and very large 6’4” on his hind legs and 220 lbs . Very lean for a dog that large . Loved kids and was a natural guardian . Very protective of me . In fact no one got closer to me than him . He would kind of run interference by standing between me and anyone that approached until he determined they were not a threat. Love to get another one one day .
I fell in love with Saint Bernards in the early 70s. As a lad, cycling on trails, there was a huge Saint that always came to the fence to say hello. Today I have a Saint, and love him to pieces.
I WANT ONE OR TWO!!!!! In regards to the guard dog, I've been around them before and if a a stranger comes to the door, they know it and their bark can be daunting! Love them!
Anne, honestly, I am so jealous of you. How lucky you are to meet such beautiful and loyal angels on the earth! Whenever I come to the UK I would like to participate at least one of the episodes you are shooting.

Love watching this lady, every once in a while in a litter, there will be a 100% throw back, an Alpine Mastiff, which looks like the original, I had one, fiercest dog I have ever seen. He was afraid of nothing, once when taking him to board, was going on trip, he got out of the car and 4 giant pits parted and got out of his way, their owners said they had never seen these dogs get out of anythings way before. he grew to a massive 170-175 lbs. and had a mastiff stroke just past his 12th birthday. Most protective and loving dog ever, also super smart. East Germans had one when they were studying dogs for best dog for their military, found the dog had the power to reason like a human, only problem is when they get 2 and a half to 3 years old, they will turn on their owner. Luckily I knew about this and took precautions, when he was 2.75 years old, he turned we went round and round, luckily I had placed a German finger collar on him with a 6 inch leash, after a while I let go and he jumped over the sofa and sat there and growled at me. Was not worried because he was a silent attacker if he was growling he was warning not attacking. Then I looked away from him and ignored him, he came up to me sat down, put his head on my shoulder and licked my face, recognizing me as the alpha male. He would split 2x4's with his teeth for fun, if had friends over he would always sleep near the smallest or youngest, incredible guard dog. When he died called reputable breeders all over the world and they all knew about the throw back, but all are put to sleep at birth, too dangerous and did not want to get sued. The Alpine Mastiff is the original Saint, but except for the throwback are extinct. The best friend I ever had. Sadly will never have another...But still love the Saints, especially the short hair, as they are closer to the original... Thanks Anneka, keep up the GReeeaatt videos.
Love these dogs. I almost got one for free once. One of the hardest things I ever had to do in my life was to say no.They really pulled at my heart strings. But now I live in a desert & it would just be plain inhumane to expect a dog like this to live under such conditions. I still love them though, & maybe someday????
I have actually met just aloof Saint Bernard's that have scary stares and are all growls and barks, but surprisingly everyone else has only met friendly Bernards. Beautiful and cute dogs.
I have a 5 1/2 month old saint bernard- people have stopped their cars to ask about her. I thought people were exaggerating about that, but it's true! Fantastic breed
My 5 month old St. Bernard is snuggled up next to me as I watch 🥰 he really is so calm and AMAZING with my 6 yr old. Ive been debating getting him certified as my sons support dog because of how bonded and emotionally intuitive he is with him, it’s incredible. He also comes after my Newfie who passed a couple years ago, and I had no idea they were crossbred to preserve the breed! Makes sense, both are such amazingly big babies. I will never understand people who think big dogs aren’t worth the trouble...I’d trust a massive Bernie with my child over any smaller breed lol My mother recently got a bernadoodle puppy (Bernese mountain dog/poodle) and he is a big sweetheart too.
I love these dogs! I got to babysit one for 3 months, and she was amazing. I would take her to the woods and everywhere else with me, and even for a young dog, she seemed to know things. I was told to never let her off the leash (obviously day 1 we went to the woods, and she never left my sight). I felt awful though returning her, as 6 months later when I went to the home to say hi and talk to the owner/pick her up she bolted out of the front door. At the time I had a tiny car and my drivers side window was open. So as the owners and people in the home feared the worse when she bolted outside, I calmly walked outside and assured them she's not really a bolter, just bored. Alll 180lbs of her jumped through my drivers side window and was waiting in the passenger seat for adventure! I knew she was not getting the stimulation and exercise she needed (never mind letting her do her work which was to pretty much explore a boarder around me and come back when the coast was clear). She was super sweet, super smart, and was perfectly good in an apartment with NO YARD in the middle of a big city because I would take her on hikes with my wolfy husky mutt/Pittbul mutt. She never "bolted" it was more just securing the area then returning to play when things were safe. The wolfy husky would bolt after deer/bears/coyotes with MY other dog, but all would return on their own. They knew where the food/rest/care was, and that was with me. Very loyal breed, especially considering her recall was better than my 3 year old dogs bread as bear dogs in the north. Love the breed.
My first dog was a Saint Bernard that my parents got before my older brother was born in 1987 and she died of natural causes in 1995 when I was 6, so this was before the Beethoven movies. Speaking from experience, they really are good with small children, they do drool a lot, and I do remember my dad having to take her to the vet on a fairly semiregular basis. We had a nice backyard with a pool and she swam like a Newfoundland, so that plus AC helped her put up with Northern Californian summers. She was such a sweetheart. To this day seeing this breed melts my heart. I think my dad insisted on a Saint Bernard probably because he thought that was the dog breed featured in J.M. Barrie's Peter Pan, which in actuality was a Newfoundland. However, I too made this same mistake in childhood based solely on the 1953 Disney version, but in my defense, these two breeds are not only physically similar and great with small children, but J.M. Barrie did actually have both breeds and featured a Saint Bernard and a Newfoundland in his works. Bottom line: my dad picked the right family dog with a Saint Bernard.
Oh I love Saint Bernard breed. I dog sat for a neighbor once for 2 weeks. Pooh Bear was her name .. she was so sweet and had such crush on my dog Genghis who was a German Shepherd Doberman mix. Thank you Anneka.💚💚💚
I always bathe them! They require a lot of grooming, and they are a bit stubborn but ever so friendly and chill 😊 Today, I had the honor of grooming a Saint Bernard four month old puppy 🥺 it was his first groom! 🥺
I had a St.Bernard. He was a wonderful pet. He loved the cats and was great with kids. He was a big boy, he was 91.4cm (36 inches) at the shoulder and weighed in at 94kg ( 208 lbs). They make wonderful pets if you have to room for them and train them at a young age. You need to brush the long hair ones a lot.
I'm a bit surprised they didn't mention the snoring that was heard during their interview. Still, lovely dogs and one that I could use a good cuddle with right now.
After watching this it saddens me to know these beautiful, caring and lovable dogs live short lives. It has always for me been one of those things in life when I wish our loyal pets could live just as long as us humans do, there is something wrong with this, can be so heart-breaking losing a loyal friend.
I just love Animal watch videos. They are so useful, educational, fascinating and addictive. So many amazing beautiful animals with different qualities and characteristics. By the way, no dog is 'too' big. Big is beautiful too. There are many excellent reasons for dogs to be generally large in size due to the work they do such as rescue, pulling people out of rivers and ditches, pulling sledge and rides, challenging dangerous and potential predators and so forth. I hope more people can understand the beauty and the importance of dogs in human every day life, including the wonderful companionship they give. Such beautiful creatures.

Yes these dogs are a bit slow. Love is their entire life. You get used to towels around the house to deal with the slobber but they are extremely smart and loving.
I had a St.Bernard in Canada called Heidi. The best dog I was lucky enough ever to own. Her bark would scare off any would be intruder, however once I introduced her to any visitor, she would never forget their scent. Even years later, she would greet that visitor with a wagging tail. And with children she was wonderful, she realised they were children and was so tolerant of their behavior. Just a wonderful family dog, you couldn't wish for better.

I grew up watching Beethoven. That’s how I fell in love with dogs ing general for the first time.
I'm a proud Mom of a baby Bernard, call me crazy but I want more! Beautiful Anneka, beautiful Keiko!!! Loved it
I'm 72. But when I was 18, 20, 22. I raised St. Bernards. We had many, in the house. They are a very loving dog, but do slobber a lot, & fling it everywhere. But we didn't mind that
Thanks for the wonderful video.
Arghh I’m reminded by how much St. bernard’s can make anyone fall in love with them at first sight! How many times I’ve been tempted to get one it’s just the drooling I can’t take, but how adorable are they!!
i own one and she is a very old lady now at 11 years and was recently diagnosed with arthritis. She was a rescue i got and had ruff first two years of her life but gave her a massive farm on a mountain to spend rest of her life and i love her to death and she is my family and i was crying through this whole video thank you for the video
How ya she?
@@robertwilliams5618 she is doing fine actually got her on some joint meds and she spending her twilight years moving from sunny spot to the next
@@captainsafa4101 what meds is she on? I have a senior too. Did yours turn 12?
@@robertwilliams5618 she is currently on petcam meloxicam and a powdered form of collegen that we mix into her food twice a day and she will be 12 in month or two
Got a St. Bernard today. She’s so cute!
This big ball of fluff is not a dangerous beast, why he is nothing but just a beautiful, sweet big good boi.
They look so cute laying on the floor 😩
Best sploot i've ever seen 😆
Yeah, they are like stuffed toys with so fluffy fur coat
Love these dogs. I almost got one for free once. One of the hardest things I ever had to do in my life was to say no.They really pulled at my heart strings. But now I live in a desert & it would just be plain inhumane to expect a dog like this to live under such conditions.
I still love them though, & maybe someday????
That was a great decision u made
Have you considered a shorthaired giant breed? maybe a greater swiss mountain dog but i dont know how they handle heat.
They truly are Gentle Giants….i now am raising my fourth…❤
Beethoven actually made me want a Saint Bernard. It was one of my favorite movies growing up. I finally got one and am so happy with him.
I love Saint Bernards.
I have actually met just aloof Saint Bernard's that have scary stares and are all growls and barks, but surprisingly everyone else has only met friendly Bernards.
Beautiful and cute dogs.
They're soooo beautiful, gentle and lovable! 🥰🥰 I love that the background music is "Amazing Grace".
I will never understand people who think big dogs aren’t worth the trouble...I’d trust a massive Bernie with my child over any smaller breed lol
My mother recently got a bernadoodle puppy (Bernese mountain dog/poodle) and he is a big sweetheart too.
Thank you for saint bernard episode.. Animal watch always the best.. Thank you from lebanon
Awe sweet, big, squishy headed pups they are absolutely adorable .
when i was a kid, my father brought at home a female one. Really smart dogs. Gama was a wonderful dog.
Love St Bernard’s. Had one he lived to 11yrs. Still miss him. Great dogs and great friends.
They are so sweet that all of them are saints.
Best dog I ever owned for 11 yrs. Miss him and the love and even drool.
Can I just say, Saint Bernard don't drool all the time, only after having water and looking at food
👍🐾
I'm a bit surprised they didn't mention the snoring that was heard during their interview. Still, lovely dogs and one that I could use a good cuddle with right now.
After watching this it saddens me to know these beautiful, caring and lovable dogs live short lives. It has always for me been one of those things in life when I wish our loyal pets could live just as long as us humans do, there is something wrong with this, can be so heart-breaking losing a loyal friend.
I see animal watch, I click thumbs up right away. Anneka never disappoints
They are just wonderful dogs 💕 thank you 👍 for presenting this breed 👏
I just love Animal watch videos. They are so useful, educational, fascinating and addictive. So many amazing beautiful animals with different qualities and characteristics. By the way, no dog is 'too' big. Big is beautiful too. There are many excellent reasons for dogs to be generally large in size due to the work they do such as rescue, pulling people out of rivers and ditches, pulling sledge and rides, challenging dangerous and potential predators and so forth. I hope more people can understand the beauty and the importance of dogs in human every day life, including the wonderful companionship they give. Such beautiful creatures.
Beautiful and more beautiful gentle dog
Grew up with a saint Bernard named Roxy. She was as gentle as can be. Such a sweetheart.
Wow, what an amazing dog. This really gave me a much moore positive insight on the breed. Lovely
💖😍
I grew up with st bernards there amazing!! We had a burglar get in our house on thanksgiving lol 😂 when we got back out St. Bernard had our front window frame 🖼 around its neck with the burglars shoe in its mouth and hat in the yard. Cops 👮♀️ arrested him neighbors heard all the commotion ppl were astounded 😮 at what they saw. These dogs will defend there territory and humans
Was there a human foot in the shoe?
I finally get to see these beautiful gentle rescue dogs
Is this the same family th
That raises chow chows?
I remember how wonderful all of her ogs were with her kids and how well groomed the pups all were (and that the kids helped)
Huge , strong but calm and kind and oh so cute. Bernards are so adorable. I saw one when I was a little child and i've been hooked ever since. 😍😙❤
Glorious ❤ Thank You.
They are gorgeous 💝💝💝
This and Dogumentary TV are the best dog channels on RUclips 🐶
I’ve always wanted a Saint Bernard. But my parents think they are too big. :(
A random RUclips channel they are really big, gorgeous
I have one and your parents might be right lol there so big they wreck everything .lol not destroying things on purpose just so big they bump into everything
they ARE big, plus tonnes of fur and drool. not the easiest to train either, but still one of my fav breeds
Same
and they are sometimes stubborn too ! but yeah : we love them like this, don't you think ??
LOOOL 2:50 She didn't even get through the threshold before getting slimed !! What beautiful, wonderful dogs!
Loved this video. Had two saints of my own, itching for another now that I am a bit older.
I had two of these, my current boy is 235lbs of solid muscle, and is a very good boy(service dog that helps me take care of my dad)
How wonderful
Damn, that's 106,5 kg LOL. He's a BIIIIIG BOY!
@RoyHodgson97 indeed he is, hell he is only 6kg lighter than me.
@@nicholasneyhart396 And strong as a bull I'd presume? I've read somewhere that dogs generally speaking are roughly twice as strong as a grown man of similar weight...
@RoyHodgson97 I don't know how strong he is for sure. He never moves anything that I wouldn't move myself, but my perception of what is normal is skewed as a d2 heavyweight wrestler. When it starts snowing in a few months, I can see how much he can pull in a sled though.
Yes these dogs are a bit slow. Love is their entire life. You get used to towels around the house to deal with the slobber but they are extremely smart and loving.
0:05 Anneka: "This week we're meeting ... St Bernards" (hugs)
Dog: Snrrrkkk (distinctive pleasure sigh big dogs make when hugged)
This breed is adorable nd one of my personal favourites
Just lost my Tank a year ago he was 8 and he was the most amazing dog with the biggest heart and soul I have ever experienced
The narrators voice is great. Normally I get annoyed by narrators, but there's something about her voice that's really captivating.
Gorgeous dogs. Thanks for the video!
Любимые собаки 💖🐕💝
Huge sweet and absolutely loveable fur babies
One of my favourite breed since childhood 😁
I love St. Bernard’s!! Beautiful dogs ♥️😍
Such beautiful dogs
I like them very much thank you for making this video
I had a St.Bernard in Canada called Heidi. The best dog I was lucky enough ever to own. Her bark would scare off any would be intruder, however once I introduced her to any visitor, she would never forget their scent. Even years later, she would greet that visitor with a wagging tail. And with children she was wonderful, she realised they were children and was so tolerant of their behavior. Just a wonderful family dog, you couldn't wish for better.
incredibly beautiful dogs!
Trop beau le Saint- Bernard, c'est un magnifique chien de sauvetage pour les montagnes, c'est comme le Terre - Neuve.
Hello, people. THIS MY FAVORITE RESCUER DOG!👍😊💋🐕 Thank you. Perfect.
The true comment in comment section. Actually rescuing was the purpose of breed
Hi anneka, great video of saint Bernard, these dogs are amazing. Keep up good work. Stay safe.🐕.
Such a beautiful gentle breed. So sad they live such short lives. 8-10 yrs goes by in a blink of an eye.
I love Saint Bernard sooo much....they are adorable...!! 😍😍😍🐶🐶🐶🐕🐕🐕
Saint Bernards are big floofy squishy teddy bears and they’re the biggest sweethearts I LOOOOVE them, I think of them in the same way as Newfies, they’re just big snuggle bugs
Beautiful dog!
