Well, I think it's sort of misleading to just look at a film's budget and box office gross to determine if it was a hit or a flop. A lot of these movies (especially the ones made in the 1980s and 1990s) ended up making most of their money from video sales and rentals as well as from being shown on cable. Also, the movie Chaplin is considered a flop if you're just looking at box office numbers, but it was critically acclaimed and Robert Downey Jr. got an Oscar nomination for it. You can't always determine a movie's success solely based on how much money it made.
The thing that fascinating about this list is that an actor can get paid a certain amount of money for a role because the movie was deemed as a flop, but if the actor did that same movie today, they’re not getting paid that amount of money they’re getting paid more
Sorry, but, for example. If a movie have a 30 Million Budget, everything under 60 Million box office is a flop, course halve of the money stay at the movie theatre's...
Question as I’m unclear as to the logic in general , not RDJR specific - if the budget is 20M$ and it made 22M$ (not including any dvd, streaming or toys) , the studio splits the tickets with cinemas to about 49-51% etc , how is it average if it costs 20M$ and they made 22M$ and probably got back from tickets around 11M$ or more /less and also not including advertising budget as unclear if part of budget or not !
I could see why they only paid him 500K initially for Ironman because that was his average pay check for his movies before Ironman. Man after Ironman his pay check was going through roof. They paid him 10mil for playing a corpse in The Nice Guys
Was he seriously paid $800k for The Incredible Hulk???? He was in ONE post credits scene that was like a minute long. He was probably only on set for a day or two at the most. Also, what is exactly the difference between a "blockbuster" and and a "superhit"? Iron Man 3 grossed $1.2 billion on a $200 million budget, but isn't considered a "superhit" for some reason. Surely, grossing 6 times it's budget should qualify for the highest category.
He doesn’t get nearly enough credit for “acting” himself over, and over and over again. Do yourself a favor. Go watch Burt Lancaster, Paul Schofield, Wolfgang Preiss and dozens of others in “The Train”. These are REAL actors who deserve what Robert gets for just,…doing whatever it is he does.
Some people are Hollywood actors and others are Hollywood entertainers. RDJ is more of an entertainer (I’d also put Ryan Reynolds, Kevin Hart, Nicolas Cage, and Dwayne Johnson in the entertainers list, among others). I can’t really claim that one is better than the other - some people get paid the big bucks for being able to step into any role, and others only have one trick, but it’s a trick audiences don’t get tired from and keep coming back for more.
Many actors such as even Denzel n such as Marky mark also have had some bad films, yet it's not always the actors fault. Sometimes the story line is just so obvious n stupid that even a great performance is not enough to make viewers blind. Plus supporting actors are also not always a good combination. Robert is a great actor. He is also a good example of a person who can change his life around.
So dude made 470,941,000 million in his whole career and hasn’t done shit with it like make his own movie or do a big event or something he’s just sitting on it like Scrooge mcduck
This list is not correct shane black directed kiss kiss bang bang and the nice guys. Rdj was onset visiting shane when he said fuck it I'll be the dead guy. He got paid in craft services
Why would a small budget movie spend 1/5 of their budget on rdj sitting down acting dead for ten seconds. Ryan gosling and russel Crowe were the main characters which definitely took most of the budget
*Mind blowing Downey had relatively few hits after 25-years in the biz. But his sheer talent (and others' faith) earned him "Iron Man."*

“Due date”is missing I’f im not mistaken
Which is a hilarious movie!
@@Angry-Books I really like it too, even though it's essentially a remake of Planes, Trains, and Automobiles.

He really is the best as Tony Stark I honestly can't think of another actor that would do that role the same justice and have the look
Yeah, Iron Man was not a sure thing at the time, so they did not have their pick of anyone they wanted. Right choice, but also right time.
His performance in Tropic Thunder surpasses every comical shii ive seen by many 🔥

I'd do it for free then become the Prime Minister of Canada
It was not blackface, but a pigmentation alteration surgery, so he could play the character.
Yes
For ten million I can be Half Asian half black face
Richard The Third flopping is honestly insane, it’s such a well made movie.
Tropic Thunder was his best role by far lol! 😂
Source: trust me bro
Use google dummy.
His agent negotiating those rolller coaster numbers
Avengers Doomsday salary: 1 billion to save Marvel
Wonder boys was a great movie. He was a scene stealer

Maybe they are simply looking at Box Office Sales as opposed to actual Profits ?
I could see why they only paid him 500K initially for Ironman because that was his average pay check for his movies before Ironman.

Theres no way this is right lmao he easnt even in the nice vuyz
Bro acted on every sh1t, and then rocketed up. 🚀.
He earned so much money with so many flops, damn..
due date isn't on here
Why is tuff turf 'average' and weird science 'hit'? Both have 7 million Budget and 11.8 million box office.
I didn’t realize he was in so many movies. The internet made me believe he was a drug addict and felon before he landed the ironman role lol
Well he was... but also a movie star. He got his first Oscar nomination in 1992.
How the hell you participate in only in Flops for 30 years and still get roles.
And for his next movie, the paycheck is reportedly $100 million.
First born and less than zero are good movies
Fantastic four: 130 million.
I don't see him as Iron Man. I always see him as the drug addict in Less Than Zero doing what he need to do to get another hit.
Flop after flop after flop until...I am Ironman!
Just like most Marvel actors, they're not that good outside of Marvel.
He wasn't even credited in The Nice Guys.
I've watched that movie and just found out he was in it.
How TF did he get 10 mil for that?!?!
Downey was paid 500k for his role in Ironman

Where's TWO GIRLS AND A GUY from 1997?
How can someone with as many flops as him can get called for staring more movies
Yes it's true he's had a lot of flops, but since 2008 he's been in some of the highest grossing movies of all time
They don't necessarily attribute a film's overall success to the actors and instead look at their individual performances

The good performances i've seen from him was the ones were he plays himself

Katy Bates
Dolittle is the worst offense
