This 1994 Chevrolet Caprice Classic LS was the Last V8 Powered Full Frame American Sedan Built by GM

- These were not good years for GM. The accountants had run amok, and all the GM divisions suffered - a bunch of badge-engineered cars competing as much with each other as they did the competition. The styling was bland at best, and it was tough to tell one from another.
That styling similarity couldn't be said about the 1991 Caprice Classic, which replaced the very popular 1977-1990 model that also sat on the aged B-Platform. It utilized ultra rounded edges everywhere, and somewhat unappealing (at least to me) integrated skirts over the rear wheels. It was definitely controversial, and a redesign was rushed though 1n 1993 to make the styling more neutral, and to replace the anemic engine choices with more potent and modern V8s.
Love it or hate it, this Caprice, and its Cadillac, Buick and Oldsmobile counterparts, were the last body-on-frame GM cars made in the traditional American style. After 1996, if you wanted a GM full frame, you had to buy a truck.

@@curiouscars9282 Honestly, neither do I. I am of roughly similar age to you and work in the mental health field. I can tell you from firsthand experience people are all a bit (or more than a bit) nuts right now. I think that's what makes these old school cars so appealing. They harken back to a time where things were simpler. Anyway, I LOOOVE your videos and all of your charming digressions. Keep it up!

Great video, I bought a 96 caprice just like this one as a 3 year old car, except it had the LT one but not the leather. Your description of the car sounded up perfectly. The Tupperware interior was a disgrace but despite having owned some far more expensive cars since then it was probably my favorite all-time car. It drove so smooth and quiet and the engine was just wonderful. You could go just as fast on a rough dirt road as on the freeway, the deep suspension travel and the tall tires were a golden combo. With its rear wheel drive, high ground clearance (for a sedan), posi traction and heavy trunk overhang it was even a great winter car.
Dont forget the Buick Roadmaster. It too, ended in 1996
Also, the venerable Cadillac Fleetwood was pulled from the market after 1996.
I have a 94 buick roadmaster. It has 297,000 miles and still drives.
When he reached 88 mph did he go into the past?

Great videos Bill and hello from Buffalo, NY! Die-hard GM guy here.Count me in the minority but I love this last whale style and especially the wagons. It was sad though what happened with GM management around this time.
I love GM too. Not a huge fan of this Caprice, but I sure did love the Roadmasters.
I'm from Buffalo too! You won't find any that nice on the salty roads around here!😞
This was my first police cruiser at the beginning of my career in 1996. They were great the first year but after that the car literally disintegrated around you. In 1998 the NYPD went all Ford Crown Vic. Although the Fords weren't perfect they lasted a bit longer and took a beating. I don't think any Caprices left in the NYPD made it past 1999, (maybe 2001 if you were in a crap command with a fleet manager who didn't give a damn.)
You have to consider the NYPD factor also. In some Midwest PD it may have lasted longer lol. Eventually they gave us hybrids midway through my career. Total disaster; too small for two big guys with gun belts and vests etc.
NYPD literally runs their cruisers into the ground
@@garyblanchard1084 Yes they do.
Much prettier than the Crown Vic, I just LOVE those Caprices, all of them!!
lmao
As a Ford guy I have to disagree. But this Chevy is the last of the traditional GM land yachts and this one looks to be on great shape.
@@MisterMikeTexas We can't all agree, but to be honest; I also like the Crown Vics, mostly because GM made the stupid decision to discontinue those great full-frame cars...But my first choice will always be a GM car because of the styling and, in my opinion, better quality....
I had the LT1 Police issue Caprice, that car should not have been sold to the public. The power of that car was beyond belief. I had to practice parallel parking for weeks without spinning the tire, which freaked out people on the sidewalk. When the engine was hot, it started cruising by itself at 40-45 mph, I just touched the brake time-to-time to slow it down in LA traffic.
I haven't even watched it yet, just wondering what Dalton is gonna fuck up on this episode
Lol! Dalton seems to be in hot water most of the time...

I was one of the weirdos that loved those cars. Especially the station wagon version. Wish I could have one today.
This video made me kind of emotional, Shes a true beauty, you don't see many vehicles like this on the road today. The big V8 body on frame RWD that was affordable for the average family, and was very spacious. Im 24, but i have a soft spot for old school huge sedans. One day i will buy one of these . Im already knowing that these will get more expensive as the years come by, since they are so valuable. Some of these sedans cost over $10000 and some are even $20000. The GM B Body sedans were amazing. Take me to the late 80s early 90s when a middle class life was affordable at my age and could buy a car.
I like these years too.., but you should drive a low mileage, mint condition, Caddy sedan Deville or Lincoln continental from 1970 -1976... 👍🇺🇸👍

Bill, I really enjoyed the history of GM and Chevrolet provided in this video. I did not know this car was based on the 1977 Chevrolet which was a great success as you indicated. One of my ALL TIME FAVORITE CARS! BEAUTIFUL!
Have only driven this once. Back in 1991 I had booked a Cadillac with AVIS in Palm Beach International Airport. They didn't have one, so they handed me the Caprice.
I drove a 1973 Cadillac Coupe dé Ville at home, so I wasn't pleased, but what could I do? I drove it down to Boynton - and right back to PBI first thing next morning.
It was like driving a waterbed. I don't know if they had put too cheap tires on it, but I didn't enjoy it.
After complayning AVIS handed me the new Town Car! Somebody later asked me in Miami where they had got that from. It turned out to be a lease car or something.
But - what a treat. I kept renting Town Cars from Hertz Rent-a-Car throughout the 1990's..
In Denmark this model Caprice has a better reputation for rust protection as the previous model had. It is essential here, as Mercedes will start showing rust before they are
three years old because of the climate.
Great cars! I own a 1994 model with the B4U option. Those we're the ultimate Caprice! 5.7 V8, sport suspension, and rear Posi-traction differential. Truly a wolf in sheep's clothing.
I never understood why Chevy and Ford stopped making full frame V8 RWD cars but I wish they would bring them back. Those LS caprice cars can do very good burnouts 😄
i hate how so few cars now and over the last 3 decades have been front wheel drive.
I absolutely love your narrative skills. Thanks for the education :)
Love your videos. Brings me back to the great times of the 70’s and 80’s. Keep up the good work.
"I'm going to try to get this video under 20 minutes" --> 25 minutes later "Thanks for watching!"
The lace alloy wheels on the Caprice really bring the bling but the finish and alignment on that dashboard look like it was engineered by Yugo.
@RickReviews The plastics were hard and cheaply manufactured. At least the odd discoloration of mid '70's-'80's was gone. Even the Fleetwood of this generation (in my opinion, the best looking) had issues with underwhelming engineering.
Then there's optispark...
In 2009 I got a 91 Caprice Classic for a daily driver in Finland with 170000miles and when I sold it in October 2020 it had 220000miles, It was the best car I have ever owned! It was depenable, durable, comfortable, had ok fuel economy for what it was, had ok torque and I payed 4300€ for it and sold it for 3000€. I love the design of these beached whales, It looks so much better than the 2000 Mercury Grand Marquis I drive now.
You have so much knowledge of the automotive world. Thanks Bill!
Hey Bill excellent video, I love it when you have the older North American made cars, the old lugsobarges as you put it lol I would really like to see some more Chrysler 300 doesn't matter what year I just love those cars.
I love my 94 Caprice...I'm in Michigan the land of salt and rot so I sacrificed power for a rust free car and found a 4.3 V8 purple pearl metallic which is a rare color...a swap in the future is definitely in the plan but I love the fuel economy it gets and how quiet it is...im only in my 40s so I don't have sensitive elderly ears yet but I absolutely love this car so much I want another...they are addicting once you drive one let me tell ya!
Absolutely correct about it being a great interstate cruiser! I did a trip from northern Ohio to southern Florida and back to Ohio again and it was one of the best road trip cars I have ever driven.
We never had these full sized sedans in Europe, I'm jealous because I love these cars so much. I know that a lot of people say that american cars are shit but I don't care, I'll love them no matter what
This was my second patrol can when I was with LASD.... I loved it. It was like patrolling in a Cadillac.
Bill bought this one at auction from the NYPD Blue props department

Great history as usual. It was ‘94 when they got the more powerful engine. It made 260hp vs 180 for 91-93, both with the 5.7 and identical MPGs.
The first Gen II LT1small block was the '92 Corvette. New for '93 Z28 and Trans Am CF4 cars were next, minus 25 HP. Full sized Caprice, Roadmaster, and Fleetwood cars followed in '94 minus another 15 HP. Even at 260 HP, these engines were light years ahead of tired detuned smog motor that the Gen I small block had become.
My favorite car.over 3000 miles & well taken care of repairs & tune ups, running new.good vedeo.
I always prefer the look of the Caprice over the Crown Victoria even in this body style.
Love your videos, Bill!
Thanks!

Bill- you are a very interesting man. I like your style. You mentioned that 'Caprice' died with this car - but it didn't. GM in Australia (Holden) (which has now gone to God) built Caprices- Statesman Caprice's until 2017. They were rebadged as Chevies or Pontiacs- and exported to the States. They even made a Police Car version which I see on You Tube from time to time. They were all LS powered - either 6.0 litre or the 6.2 LS3 and quite luxurious. They were Holdens and when you bought one you could order either the Chev Bow Tie or the Holden badge. I have the 'Ute' version which is built on the Statesman Caprice wheelbase/unibody chassis. Just thought you might like to know.
Im 34 and living in Puerto Rico now since 2003. I remember the cars my dad used to bring home when we lived in New England. All the cars were used, but he had a talent to choose cars. I miss the greatness of historic American cars.
I had never heard of this engine until today!

The 94-96 LT1 9c1's were awesome cars. They were such a hit, Police Dept's keep them going far longer than other cars, because they were so loved. They outperformed the crown vic in every test they did.
Ah My Covid relieve channel surpasses as usual.
Very kind - thanks.
The engine was a 5.7 LT not an LS. This engine was available in the Roadmaster in 95 and 96. This was the last version of the gen 1 small block produced by Chevrolet, which was a slightly detuned Corvette/Camaro engine. Underrated at 260 hp it was quite a quick car and with some dyno time it was easily good for 300 hp at the wheels. I had a 96’ SS, it was a pleasure to drive and was extremely fast for the day, especially after the tune. It may look like a grandpa car but it goes like a corvette and handled excellent in SS trim.
I always liked the 74 best.this reminds me of my 94 lesabre custom.nice car overall.have a good weekend bill.
