I won't install any multi-stage or variable speed units without either an in-line or whole home surge protector. Some of these new units look more like a big computer inside than any furnace from 10 years ago. I've replaced lots of boards and ECM's this year with all the storms and power outages, but not one from a unit I installed.
Now you have me nervous because I don't have a whole home surge protector. I replaced a SL22 thermistor in my blower motor module a couple years ago, but not sure what took it out. Now I'm getting a intermittent high pitched whine on the first stage heat which isn't the bearings.. Any ideas?
A power surge destroyed the PSC motor in my old furnace. I finally installed a GE whole house surge suppressor in my main breaker box to protect the ECM motors and other electronics in the house. I have been wanting to put a separate surge suppressor on the furnace and condensing unit but I haven’t gotten around to it yet.
Some of the boards are communicating and will lock out without communicating to the ecm. Rheem is one that off the top of my head. No issue with ac because you just use the y to control the relay, no board needed, but heat is a different story. The board says no blower, no heat I am locking out...
I have a Goodman air handler with 3/4 ECM motor. Trying to self diagnose. Condenser kicks on when call for cool, no fan. No fan when call for fan ON, nothing happens if call fur heat either. Stat is good.Having trouble determining if motor or board is bad. No easy way to jump motor. If nothing happens when call for fan or heat, but condenser kicks on if call for cool. Does this tell you anything? Thanks!
I thought I had a bad bearing in my carrier infinity inducer motor, but have determined the the main blower motor is making a intermittent high pitched whine (g#5 note) when on first stage. I "think" it's related to the module, but not sure. Anyone?
Only time that I ever changed a dip switch when it was operating the board went out on me so I never change dip switches when power is on the system. 😔 😟 🙁
Nice video, can you get an aftermarket motor or install a PSC motor with a relay until you get the proper ECM motor? I have seen this done somewhere. Thanks for the video.

Working on a bryant gas furnace with ecm. I can't use a psc for heat cause the board cannot detect 250rpm or better then it kills the gas and locks out. I cannot get around this. Any one seen this??? Scarriar want 1300+ for a no good motor. I usually go with psc here in rural s. tx
On anyvariable speed motor, if you want to confirm the motor is ok take the low voltage plug out. Motor will run if its good becasue there is nothing telling it not too. If it runs, you have an issue with the board or within the communication harness.
Yeah, I did that after being quoted $700 for a new ECM motor in our Trane unit. Soldered in two new six dollar MOVs and it has been running since 2014 with no issues. Most techs don't/won't do component level repair. I'm sure it takes too much time and it is a liability that is not worth taking for most companies. I can certainly understand with today's society. Modern stuff is just way overly complicated and becoming more and more proprietary every day. Our future looks very expensive.

@@97Napkinsno tecmate sends 24v to COMM and Rx terminals. Carrier infinity sends PWM signal, technically not the correct way to test, but it’s a go-no-go test.

All new furnaces these days come with at least a constant torque ecm blower motor.

I've had problems too. Not looking good for furnaces either. We had to wait 3-4 weeks just to get a mobile home replacement furnace in
With the rescue ECM, the signal comes from the 24V thermostat/board terminals. So it is possible to make it work.
Put is a PSC motor wired direct till ECM available

Could just add on a qwik swap x1 or X3
Good one bud I keep the end of the motor after a change and make a test cord handy for my leads
Could temporarily install a 115V PSC motor, and wire into line voltage, have it run 24/7 for heat, until the new ECM was available ?
Sounds like a good reason to install a dumb system. You might be able to use a rescue ECM if you use a RIBI relay.
Just wondering--Is it possible to find the problem in the module and replace only that part? Sorry if this is a dumb question.

We have at least 10-15 jobs where we installed infinity systems and we are waiting for the stats. We just install honeywells for now

That’s crazy. You probably had static electricity buildup and zapped the board.

The supply shortage is insane..
Nice one ...👍👍👍🎃🎃🎃
Thanks, good job.
I just temp in a psc motor and relay. Not sure if that works on carrier or not.
Why didn’t you use the motor tester tool thingy?
Doesn’t work on those carrier units
@@hozerhvac4406 ah, copy that.
Looking for DC voltage on infinitys 👍

i would see if the mov is open,,,they are cheap

I enjoy your videos. I hope Santa Claus or your boss gives you some red pipe wrenches soon to help you out.
But Biden says everything is fine. Lol
Biden bad Trump Orangeman good
Good one
Couldn't you put a PSC motor in there?
Belive it depends on the manufacturer. I know some you can run a psc off the ecm terminals for emergencies.

If you can't use the board then just use some relays

That’s a good reason not to buy these new variable speed two stage systems meanwhile the customer has no heat!

I don’t think the TEC mate works on those connectors
