  • In this HVAC Training Video, I Show how to Troubleshoot Whether the ECM Fan Motor or the Main Circuit Board in the Furnace or Air Handler is Bad. I Show the Measurement Points to be Able to Diagnose This Effectively When the Fan Either Won't Turn On or Won't Shut Off. ECM Constant Torque and ECM Multispeed Motors are now the Base Level Fan Motor Across all Residential HVAC Equipment. Supervision is needed by a licensed HVACR Tech while performing tasks as Experience and Apprenticeship garners Wisdom and Safety.

    Six years ago my Rheem air handler ecm fan motor stopped working. I determined the ecm fan module went bad - I assume it was from a voltage surge from a storm around that time. I was able to locate and purchase a new GE gentec module on eBay for $250 (the dealer flashed/programmed the replacement module for my specific system application). I did not purchase a new complete GE gentec ecm motor assy as at that time it was $700. The air handler fan motor w/the replacement fan control module is still working fine to this day. Properly diagnosing the module as the issue for fan not working was very difficult as all I had to go on was the wiring diagrams located on the air handler. At that time I didn't even know that an ecm fan assy that uses DC power to operate the fan motor was a thing. Had I had this video back then as an explanation of system operation it'd of saved me several hours of troubleshooting. Back then I couldn't find any info online on how the ecm fan motors worked or their elec/system diagnosis procedures.

      Easy way to diagnose one vs the other. This may be somewhat out of date for newer ecm stuff.
      Try to turn the motor. If it feels stuck, unplug the module. If it turns freely, it's a bad module. If it still feels rough, replace all.

    I've literally diagnosed three bad ecm motors this past week! All three of the customers said they were running their furnaces on a generator (generac).
    Another great video, Craig! I appreciate what you do for this community!

      @YTsux24-7 3 месяца назад +1

      Do they have surge protectors on the furnaces?
      I'd bet they do not.

    • @OhHenrysMusic
      @OhHenrysMusic 3 месяца назад

      @@YTsux24-7 Probably not.. There was a big power outage where I work and it messed up a lot of people's furnaces.

    • @YTsux24-7
      @YTsux24-7 3 месяца назад +3

      @OhHenrysMusic The inrush surge of the generator smoked the motor modules I'd bet. Upsell a surge protector any time a circuit board, variable speed, or ECM blower gets fried during power outages.
      This will protect their investment from future outage damage.
      P.S. thank you for your service.

    I know you have the heart of a teacher, but you should CHARGE for all this knowledge. Case in point... you saved my son at least $300 plus in labor. He calls me up... 8 year old Bryant heat pump. Blower with an X13 would run all the time. Using one of your videos... I pulled the thermostat and it still ran. Checked G to C no voltage. Pulled the fan speed wires on the X13... still ran. Bad module. Replaced it with the Rescue Ez13 because it had both pigtails. All is well. i charged him a 12 pack of beer. 😁

      There is a lot of good information here, and it's free. But in all of his videos he jumps around quite a bit and they can be hard to follow. Little things like is this 24 volt ac or dc? He will just say 24 volt and assume that you know. But, I shouldn't complain because it's free but I'm complaining a little bit anyway.

    Have a EMC motor and a IFC furnace, replaced my emc motor with same emc motor specs it with a refurbished one! When we connected it just turns on continuously, disconnected thermostat wires, stays on. When we turn heat or ac goes thru process and turns on. If I turn fan on it stays running but at lower speed, when I shut fan off it stays running but faster speed. Thoughts

    If it’s an air handler here in the Pacific Northwest then you might see 256 volts at the blower in one neighborhood and 207 volts at a residential home a couple of blocks away… Ya our power grid is screwed up here

    I found this exact board and motor to be problematic. At least for me I’m constantly replacing either or in some cases both because of the blower taps not energizing or the motor not kicking on when being energized by the taps. Anyone else having this issue?

  • @christianroysdon9562

    Like craig Said. Fails at the Module. not the motor I know This for sure. Because I've Fixed.six ECM motor instead of replacing the module or the motor itself. On the high voltage side of the module There is a component on the board that is called a rush current limiter. This component, after a period of a few years blows a leg off the board. Due to heating of the component. $3 part from Melzer electronics out a Texas and you're up and running again. The latest one that I Fixed. Was Six years old and The rush current limiter blow a leg off the one side of the Component.. replaced with new one And still going 4 years now.
