I've once had a location 300m away from my home. Granted, I was playing a Germany map back when only 20 cities were covered. But if you compare the area of that 300m circleto the cocered area, this is still only roughly a 1/15000 chance of such a close location. I'd say I've played ~60 Games on Germany maps back when only 20 cities were covered. That would give a chance of ~2% of such a close location, which actually sounds pretty plausible

This happened to me once and here's the funny story behind it:
About 2 years ago I stayed in Norway for a holiday for 2 weeks and played the Norway map to improve my knowledge on it as I travelled the real country. Well just 2 rounds in I come across a road I not only drove on the prior(!) day but also spawned in the exact location where I decided to spend half an hour and climb up a hill (for the views)... Will never forget that 😂

    • @zackrog1270

The odds of that happening must be astronomical. Norway is a really beautiful place. I just visited my brother in Lofoten this summer and hiked the hill behind his house. I recognised and have been on the exact train track in Lisbon at 6:05 ish many, many times. Funnily enough, a number of years ago in one of your videos, the exact stop that I used to get off at for university, which is part of this line that was shown in this video, showed up too. Was a very strange moment for me at the time, because although I'm sure Lisbon pops up occasionally on Geoguessr, we're still very small all things considered.

Didn't take me long in my geoguessr 'career' to find a place I had been. Just for kicks I tried a US only game with no moving. 2nd location was right next to an apartment I lived in 10 years ago. The initial view was a shopping center right next to the apartment complex and I immediately recognized it. And when I turned there was my old home. And not just 'I can see my building' but I could see the actual apartment I lived in because it was the first building that faced the road.
It's the only time I've ever gotten 5000 on no-moving and will probably be the only time I get it in 10 seconds.

    Hi Tom.
Devoured your content since stumbling across your channel this week.
Used to live in Tredegar, Wales, so been on that very road in Merthyr going to the lovely Brecon mountain railway, after 10 years of delay and disorder,😅 the A465 will become the road it needed in the '70s.
Mum now lives on the Gold coast, so been to all the theme parks there especially Dreamworld, and have been to Dublin, catching the ferry from Hollyhead, so been on the A55.
Love watching lots of Welsh stuff, seeing as I live in New Zealand now, where I watched people who did the 'Coast to Coast' challenge arrive yesterday at New Brighton pier. (With a random little aircraft display)
Love your stuff, congratulations on all you've achieved and good luck in future endeavours!

One potentially interesting variation on this would be to play a game of Geoguessr where you're only allowed to drop your pin on places you've been irl, so you can only get a perfect score if it's a place you've been (and you guess it right, ofc), and otherwise in order to maximize points you have to figure out what the closest location is that you've actually been. E.g., in this video's rounds, you would get a perfect score for that last one, but for the London one you'd have to click a mile or so away and lose a few points. (And for something like Japan you'd be cursed to get 0 points.) Then you can set a goal of a certain total score and play until you reach it.

It certainly was an interesting video! Although I think it might be more interesting to exclude U.K locations or play a country map like France or Germany until you pop up in a place you've traveled to, because I think the odds of you being put in London in a place you've been to makes it the most likely outcome. Either way, really enjoyed! I always get excited when I see Florida locations I've been to and have a lot of familiarity with.

I've been playing on and off for about 5 years, and two days ago I got a street that is less than a mile away from where I live and a road I take pretty much everyday. I was mind blown. The second closest I've ever been to my house was about 30 minutes away.

I'm not a very worldly person, so I was very much surprised to have you blast past a place I have been to in this video before you found a spot of your own. I stayed at an AirBnB about a block away from Round #32.

As a New Yorker who’s been to Paris those were my 2 closest rounds to places I’ve been before, but no cigar. Very fun video!

Good luck for your incoming mission ! I also really like this concept and the variations you proposed. You could also do the same "challenge" but on the US map, or in continental Europe only

The reverse happened to me recently, I was playing Geoguessr in the airport before a trip. When I landed and caught an Uber to my hotel I was hit with a sense of déjà vu and realised I recognized the outside from Geoguessr an hour before.

12:13 Brings back memories. Stayed at Four Winds Caravan Park for a week. I remember one day it was so windy someone's grill almost burned their caravan down, and we helped put out the fire. Anyways, I really enjoyed exploring Wales, walking from the caravan park, to Rhyl promenade and back to Ffrith for curly fries and a cider. Conwy castle is also pretty cool, Rhuddlan castle, and the waterfall... Wish I could teleport into these memories from Moscow. I hate being stuck here and Tom's videos always cheer me up, reminding me of carefree vacay times. Can't believe it's been 3 years ago, wish I could visit again... 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿❤
Guess this week I'll be binging straight line missions. Again 😂🍻

Like the vid! Idea for a follow-up that might be a bit more interesting and challenging: pick a selection of interesting holiday/travel pictures with a story. Then geo-detective them (easy for you since you were there) and then start playing until you get to one of them (or another that qualifies as the same type of location).

What a small world, watching a Tom geoguesser video and seeing your hometown. That turn off leads to St Asaph which is the second smallest city in the UK, and my family home is 20 seconds off that turn off, that sign for tweedmill is always my confirmation am nearly home

Great video idea, maybe you could try again and do somewhere you've been on foot so you can't get a road like this.
I've seen a couple places near me in your videos before, one in Guildford on a wetherspoons game and another where I knew a road you were on near where I grew up in Fleet

I grew up in a small town. If you took a pic down a random street in that town, very good chance I’d never been on it. I did ride my bike around a lot - in one corner of the town. Otherwise just drove to stores, schools, and activities. Main roads, sure, but a random street? Less likely. I can’t imagine how many years it would take playing geoguesser to come across a place I’ve actually been to!

I've driven that road in North Wales too. Isn't that the one with the badger warning signs? Always reminds me of a viral video from yesteryear. One of your earlier videos (brutalist architecture) featured Liverpool Hospital and it took me a few seconds to realise why it looked familiar - I've passed that spot many times on the No. 10 bus.

I like how the place you've been is also a place I've been - the only time I've ever been to the UK in fact. Went to visit my friend in Birmingham and we drove to Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch together.
Reminds me of a time I played GeoGuessr Worldwide and I ended up in Birmingham before I'd ever been there. I told my friend where it was and he told me it was super close to his house. I ended up seeing that exact place with my own eyes later when I went to visit him. The bus we took dropped us off right near where I landed on GeoGuessr that one day.
