  • I show a few custom functions that will make your new speedlights easier to use, and how to set them up for off camera flash. I also show how to set up the STE-3-RT controller for off camera flash.

With my 600EX-RT series in ETTL mode, with the Master (on camera) flash set to FIRE, the Master seems to detect the light from the slave and reduce power if I am shooting in the direction of the slave. If I point my camera away from the slave, the on camera Master fires normally. My foreground is really dark because the Master is reducing power when this happens. This is for a wedding scenario.....Any thoughts?. . Nice video by the way and well done with good info..Thanks.

Hi Philip, Thanks for the nice words. In any situation where the needed exposure is being corrupted, either by my own flash or other light, I would switch to manual mode. This lets me specify exactly how much light is produced. The challenge with this is to have a firm understanding of how much light is coming out of the flash at the various power levels. If you play with manual for a bit, I think you'll get a pretty good sense of where to start on power level in a variety of shooting situations. Good Luck ;-)

A simple method to understanding manual power setting of. F stop and flash...divide guide # of flash I'm feet or meter 600 ex rt is 195 ft (full power) setting your flash 10 feet from subject would mean you need an aperture setting of f19 then take photo at this f stop check results and adjust as needed to get exposure correct. If you use a light modifiers you will have to adjust for those...as the power will be absorbed by them. I work this out before I go on location and make a cheat sheet on index cards for my different modifiers. A shoot thru umbrella will need more light than when the light is bounced off a white umbrella. I use a 10' string tethered to my flash, give the end of string to my subject back up to where I need to set my light stop when its drawn tight have my subject drop end and shoot at my predetermined f stop...simple.

Can you use the ST-E3 to change the zoom settings on the flash units?

      @@scottrigg996 You don’t fancy showing a video? I’ve 3 RT 600’s so it’d be a great trick.
