amazing, that suppressor works so well, even the video didnt make a sound.

Gotta love a good DIY video, especially when you do things without certain machines and materials that are typically used. I used to do a lot of stuff like this before I got a lathe
I recommend using a hole saw to make the disks. It's precise, quick, and leaves a precisely centered pilot hole .
Thought it was funny to take the measurements with a micrometer and then use a Sharpie to mark with.
Faz muito sentido a sugestão do Clyde Wary, e com isso evitaria que o projétil esbarre nas peças e consequentemente atrapalhe na precisão.
Canal Variedades Boa idéia mesmo, matou dois objetivos numa só.
Clyde Wary what is a hole saw???
i figured he would save time by buying nut washers
You can tell this man loves what he does and doesn't care what bad things people say to great job
if you want a much more compact suppressor heat up some (empty) 20GA shells and pull the plastic case out of the brass head, push the primer out and your left with a .23 caliber hole. I think I used 3/4 in pvc to put the brass cases in. wrap brass case in electrical tape till they fit snug in pvc. use as many as you want, but fit the first one flush with end of pvc and glue in place. leave enough room at that back end of the 3/4 pvc to fit a 1/2 inch piece of pvc inside approximately 1in (this will require sanding the outside of the 1/2 in pvc until it fits snug) glue if needed. put shrink tubing on end of barrel and then slide suppressor on. you may need to use oil to get it to slide on, the oil will cause the shrink tubing to swell making a tight fit. I used 5 shotgun shells which made it about 5 inches total and made it 15db quieter.

I was with you right up to the part about the steel wool. Wouldn't want that stuff sifting down my barrel.
real firearm suppressors have no fillers only baffles
Scott , I think a much simpler method to suppressing an air rifle would be to turn the music up , lol . Good vid though, i liked it except for the wording and no sound of you talking through your thoughts. that was a bummer for me
+²MõD² Wrath I will be making another with better material soon, I'll be sure to talk this time, Yea music works well too lol
Put on some Led Zepplin or Ozzy, maybe even some AC/DC.. your good to go, lol
I look forward to your next video and seeing your new upgrade to your air rifle.
Funny how he wrote "peaces" instead of pieces. 😂😉

Pro tip: use a little dab of ca glue to hold the baffles and then epoxy them
In my version of this suppressor I used rubber baffles instead of wooden ones. I also replaced the steel wool with cloth.
I know it’s been sometime, but I like your thinking with rubber and cloth. I heard felt works really well for a sound damper. I just want one for squirrel hunting season on my aunts property. She’s like totally off the grid and basically lives off the land. Literally a “SMALL” cabin in the woods (Yes it’s that small and pretty much lives with grey squirrels as unwanted roommates) and they get in her house, destroy things and cause massive destruction to her property and way of life . She wants me to clear out as many as I can within 5-10 acres or so around her. I looked up air rifles because .22LR are loud and you scatter them once that first shot goes cracks that sound barrier. Plus, there is a shortage of ammunition, literally went to Walmart to buy 22. LR ammunition and the shelf was non existent?! That’s bad when you can’t find .22LR rounds for a Ruger 10/22 at Walmart?!!I live in upstate NY and the gun laws are some of the toughest (if not the toughest) in the country. You can’t even own an Airsoft gun or slingshot in the 5 boroughs of NYC (Bronx, Brooklyn etc.)without a special permit which I can kind of understand. But I’m no where near NYC. Even though we can buy powder burners (Rimfire and Centerfire) and what not at Cabela’s ... a lot of online retailers won’t ship to NY state period regardless of zip code?! Even though it’s just NYC and it’s bmy Walmart sells them, it makes no sense?! I just bought a Gamo Swarm Whisper.22 10x and a Benjamin Prowler .22 for less than $300 out the door? I purchased a Sig ASP20.22 but they are on back order with retailers that sell them. I sent Sig Sauer an email of my interest in the Air rifle and they called me and we’re going to ship me the whole package with the Whiskey 3 scope. Sooo excited!!! Like take my 💵... Gave home my Cap One card and he asked if I live in or around NYC, I replied “No, I live the furthest from NYC that you can while still being in New York State?!” ... NOPE he couldn’t ship it and he wanted to and understood what I was saying. It’s a personal choice to avoid dealing with any backfire purely based on politics, not laws by their legal department. Unfortunately, that doesn’t make a difference to those big gun manufacturers. I’m getting one anyways (legally) it’s just gonna take longer. What is this world coming to when responsible hunter and gun owner (with a hunting license) can go to Cabela’s and buy a long range rifle and scope but can’t buy little .177 or .22 “break barrel” pellet rifle online (like a 18yr old teen can, or sometimes even younger in certain states in the rest of the country) as a 40yr old man that wants to go hunting with his father but ammo cost and unavailability is out of control. I know some die hards hate fun’s but I’m sorry it’s our constitutional right and the actions of a few shouldn’t affect my way of life. Sorry for the rant... but yeah, seriously nice suppressor/moderator Lol.

in order for clear coat to work properly, you are supposed to wait until its completely treated which takes about 7 days with spray paint. i know these are prob just quick projects to you but thought you might find it helpful. cool projects man im diggin it
Aside of the correcting comment, this is a very clever and interesting video, well done.
Watching you paint was a challenge, the rest of it was fun :) Thanks for supporting the notion that making stuff is fun, legal, and we learn both from the manufacturing processes and the discourse about what you made. The hole saw is the answer to the majority of time consumed (other than epoxy drying, that doesn't count) making this item.
Have made a bunch of these, From youtube DIY vids. So I made one like this, but I used steel screen material and steel wool, and a metal tube with steel washers. Best one. Cut the sound down probably less than half of what it was.
Do yours effect accuracy? I've done a few now and all shoot very low.
Scott, great vid. I love the gun related DIY videos. Well done.
I made this silencer for my gamo swarm fox and it worked fine for absorbing sound. The only problem I had was that the pellets weren't coming out straight.
@My name is Marko The gamo rifle that I have doesn't come with front sights, it comes with a scope, but I'm guessing if you didn't care about the front sights you could cut them off with a hacksaw
That's a straightforward fix. There should be marks on the supressor where the pellet hits it.
Reminds me of my early years when with cardboard, masking tape and some cotton we could make a .22 a quiet as a fart.
That knot in that board looked like a pissed off turkey 😄😄
4:26 I wonder if anyone else caught that joke, that's too funny, nice job Scott, merci pour la vidéo!
+rfcilia hellen keller would've got the fucking joke.
No I did not, omg you just enlighten me, you must be some kind of genius !
2:58 forget those discs, fill it with steel whool slightly impregnated with bearing grease.
a .22 blank doesn't make any noise.
the most sound comes from the spring when expands and hits inside the rifle , good job
Scott, nice design for an air rifle. This design has been used for normal firearms, but the steel wool is flammable so the suppressor doesn't last long.
That's why before u pack with steel wool u soak all the steel wool in a flame retardant gel and then sprinkle baking soda all over it coating it well...once it's packed in the baking soda will of course shift shot to shot but will never let the steel wool catch fire
That is crazy neat. Thanks!
great thanks for showing us!!
“P.S.. that’s what she told me last night” fucken legend
Nice! I make mine using a simple plastic tube and take plastic caps from water bottles, Drill center holes and load 'em in' . In the inside of the cap furthest out which is also the end cap (easy) I cut a small disc of foot support gel with a hole in center . It definitely quiets things down a lot, and couldn't be easier. Also, airguns now come with suppressors like mine, and are legal. Also, using plastic baffles shows no intent to use for standard firearms as the plastic cannot sustain the heat from even one round.
I love how You showed the amount of dBs lowered!
This is a great silencer the steel wool will absorb the sound
Since you are not having to deal with flame, as in a firearm, my thought is to wrap the cage with 550 para cord. The wool of any type would get compressed in the blast area, but the cord would not so much. It may get frayed but would hold up well and have good sound deadening qualities. Just a thought. There is also nylon web strapping.
You overestimate the power of a pellet gun I think.
If you had sprayed the steel wool with white lithium grease, it would work even better and last thousands of shots at least.
Place a stick in the other end, to turn it while painting, to avoid getting your fingermarks all over it.
2.5 inch PVC for the suppressor housing shell would be more effective. It will trap more of the sound. I made a purely pvc suppressor with no metal mesh or steel wool. If you are making one for an air rifle, you won't need these.
My suppressor specs:
Length: 10.5 inch.
Diameter: 2.5 inch.
One 2.5 inch wide, 10.5 inch long PVC.
One 0.5 inch wide, 10.5 inch long PVC.
Two 2.5 inch PVC caps.
Drill holes that spiral around the 0.5 inch pipe and leave 3 inches undrilled on one end. The undrilled section will fit onto the barrel. Insert the 0.5 inch pvc into the 2.5 inch pvc and seal the end on only one end. Once the exit end is sealed tightly, use cotton, not steel wool, for the buffer material. You can pack more cotton inside the suppressor than you can steel wool for better buffering effect. When you have packed the suppressor as tightly as you can with cotton, place the second end cap on the end that slides onto the barrel. Make sure to have 0.5 inch holes drilled in the center of each end cap before fitting. Then do the paint and clear coat and you have yourself a faster-made, more effective suppressor. Wrap a stopper 3 inches down the barrel so the suppressor stops at the proper place.
The cotton is softer than the steel wool and will give more effectively to sound waves. This will buffer the sound much more effectively. The larger diameter of the suppressor housing shell will allow for more sound waves to enter the buffer chamber and cancel more noise.
With this build, the only thing that can be heard is the trigger mechanism and bolt release when the compressed air is released. No sound comes from the end of the barrel. I invite you to try this build out.
Email Warrior this might be a silly question but how would you make the smaller pipe sit in the center? like in the video the wooden disc things looks like it also helps keep the whole thing in the center inside the pipe. sorry english not my first language.
Interesting
TLC PG They have some spacers in the shop probably.
Email Warrior should make a video for us guys who dont like to read.
AJ Lastyona - Or can't read....
swap the steel wool out, it has zero sound absorbing properties, use fiberglass insulation, or tear a pillow apart and use the white fluff inside it, or go to walmart or target and get the cheap bed topper foam and use it, also your leaving a lot of room inside that pvc, what i did was, make the cage, wrapped it in insulation, and wrapped another cage around that, it holds the insulation perfectly, then used the bed topper foam around everything, used the same idea you had for holding everything in the center of the pvc,but i found cutting the drilled wood circle retainers in half, allows for more workability to get it centered, i use a 22 caliber BF, and it went from loud as hell to quite as fuck
Would have been great to hear the air rifle noise before the suppressor and after the suppressor was attached. Great video still!
@My name is Marko thanks, I will rewatch. Forgot about this video, now I want to make this.
Blew my mind when he just tapped off the sight I figured it would be harder than that
Buy an Umarex fake suppressor, add makeup pads covered by plastic net and electrician's tape. Slide on barrel and use soft tip Allen screws to hold in place. Quieter than this homemade tube and cotton, unlike steel wool does not rust and start blowing out the end of the suppressor. It also ensures alignment and does not break down like duct tape.;
Thank you very much Mr. Scott....
Not bad. Cheap and fun to make.
i have used this method before and it works very well but for mine after i shot about 3,000 pellets through it the steal wool fibers started t dangle in the flight bath of the pellet and would cause the occasional flyer, and it would be off by maybe 3 or 4 feet. it could have been just the way i made it but just wanted to throw that out there.
Scotch guards green or brown abrasive pads worked
Just use a foam filling and make cuts in them to make air chambers...this way the air can expand more easily and gets trapped more efficiently.
Hard to silence springer, a lot of the crack comes from the spring slamming. Nice concept for Crosman C02 pistol.
Grease on the spring will make an unbelievable difference.
Piece , pieces....
Peace dude
How to replace water filter
For the baffles - is plywood the best option, or could it be particle board, to make it lighter? And to coat the baffles, is felt as good as steel wool? There seems to be a balance of allowing air thru & deadening the sound. Some fabric might have the precise amount of absorption for sound, but be vulnerable to repeated blasts of air. Plus, it seems like the steel wool would eventually collapse onto the main tube. I know this is a super old video, but I'm hoping to try a few things for my break-barrel .22 pellet rifle, so I can shoot it in my basement & if there's dieseling, it doesn't sound like Hamburger Hill down there, lol.
I'm building one too with a high pressure system , soon il upload a video when its done my gun pierced my entire wooden closet went clean through 3 wooden plates and did a nasty hole in my wall lol
Suppressors are not illegal on firearms in the US. In fact several states have legalized them for the use of hunting. Suppessors aren't even illegal to manufacture. However possessing one without a Federal Tax Stamp issued by the ATF is illegal and will reward you with jail time and a 5 digit fine.
+Matthew Heithoff your right ... I'm just protecting my butt, alot of countries watch my videos
+Scott's Garage Roger that brother.
+Matthew Heithoff - an air rifle or pellet gun is not a firearm.
+Rebekah Davignon In some places they are considered firearms, some people have gotten in trouble for shooting them in their property. Not in the state I live in haha, gotta love the south man!
Gabriel Amat- I like reading the state law (online). My state specifically says that a firearm uses explosive gases to propel a projectile. That means gunpowder - not pellet guns, crossbows, or spearguns.
The best way he could think of to rotate the suppressor was to touch the end with wet paint and turn it.
This guy is a 'get -er done' dude, a DIYer, and not particularly concerned about small details of how to handle (he did it gently on the end edges) an item he is painting. He spent the time to produce the video, edit it down, and show us the results. We spent the time to watch, and hopefully comment on how to improve the process. However, nitpicking him to death on how he handled a wet object is kinda sad.
nice poison ivy bush right out side your door there !
The suppressor is so good, even the video itself didn't make a sound
De Huibie if you watched the whole video you would see that the suppressor does work, but it really sucks
This looks intereshing. Does it keep concentricity with the gun barrel? What about the accuracy of the rifle after putting in the silencer?
Pellet guns are considered firearms in the state of NJ. You need to have a firearms purchase permit to buy a pellet gun or BB gun. Yes, I just bought a Crosman Fire NP spring piston pellet gun only 2 days ago, and so I know :)
forget your spelling, you did a fine job, good craftsmanship, great video. hats off to you
it would be quieter if the hole in the baffles was only just big enough for the pellet to pass through, so if you are using .22 pellets the hole should be 6.5 mm, that way the air hits the baffles and slows down...maybe cut a 3 or 4 small slots in each baffle so the pressure doesn't build up
+supermotardmario but there needs to be room for the pellet to pass through
+capatainnemo he didnt account for the pellet vortex.
anyway, i dont think it'll work on airgun. unlike real gun, air gun's noise doesnt come from the bullet itself. real gun's velocity is really dependent on the bullet, while airguns depends on its compressor. doesnt really make sense to make a silencer for it at the end of muzzle. the only way to make an airgun quite is to dampened the inside of the compressor, i guess.
+Amin Ismail i have tuned my rifle, there is hardly any noise from the action..and a moderator does work with airguns
+capatainnemo Same here, Ace. Makes having a pellet gun worthwhile.
+Amin Ismail higher power air guns will make noise no matter what you do cause they spit the pellet out at super sonic speed
Nicely, done i just had to follow the step
did you use a suppresser for this video?! anyway, 66 to 55 isn't much! but nice work anyway
if u think a 11 decibel drop isn't alot your an idiot and have no idea how decibel is calculated , its uses a logarithmic scale and thats a massive difference.
Amazing, it just like the real one,but the Pity is I don't have the tool
How do you put the front sight back in?
Does the steel wool actually make any difference?
great man... its really great
It would have been much easier, drilling the holes in the 5 circles before cutting them out ;-)
10 DBA down is very good. Good job!
wonder if anyone has tryed making baffles out of kids float tubes,, looks like it would have good sound deading qualitys
Nice work.
Gathering components now for my version, but will be using stainless steel pads, not just steel pads. And it should be considerable more quiet, if things go well, but if they don't, have some mods in mind that should do the trick.
I have a .177 caliber pellet riffle and having problems trying to make a suppressor/ silencer that actually works. How much would you charge to make one like the one in this video?
Where did you get the tube for wrapping the wire are around?
Did you notice your wood top has a picture of a finch with red spot below its eye. At 1:04 when your showing the wood baffle
Woa! I didn't notice that!
Slick man very slick.
i have a Benjamin sherridan 22 cal pelet rifle i might have to make it smaller and modify it a tad to fit on the tinny barrel its a cheesy barrel but its old and a damn good pellet gun had it since i was a kid now to go silent even better to go with my red dot scope and lazer i have on it now plan to make a tactical stock for it and get a bypod
I think I would have done the drilling before cutting baffles out & primed the plastic before final spraying. What do you reckon
awesome bro !
Great work my friend! Don’t mind the negative comments. They were interested in your work otherwise they wouldn’t have watched the video!
Agreed
awesome dude thanks for video
This boy looks like George Clooney.
Try using fiberglass insulation instead of steel wool and avoid rust
silencers are not illegal on guns rifles pistols Etc you just have to have an FFL stamp and have them registered oh joy
zombielover317able obviously you don't know what your talking about. you need a Tax stamp from the ATF, with that, you could construct your own. you BUY one from an FFL...
good video, sorry for the audio, but do not worry, I made the sounds while I saw, thks for share
Disclaimer: Suppressors for firearms are NOT illegal.
True, good thing the ATF does not classify airguns as firearms making this totally legal.
Nope, cut soda cans in half , stack them up, tape em down and fire through them. Add a pvc pipe to adapt barrel to cans. The price is almost passive
Fit the whole thing inside... that's what she told me last night!! lol
a like for this one :D
you can buy a plug or circle cutter at home depot and make the job much quicker.
Scott.I will Never criticize Anyone for Mistakes,I am dyslexic I understand.
"Piece" man! ;)
nice!
Whether legal or not, it would be unwise to use that material choice on a firearm. Steel wool is flammable, and likely explosive as processed here if ignited en mass by a muzzle flash.
in your shop.....save your plane blades by laying them on their sides. Just noticed them upright.
Anything held together with duct tape is not the best out anywhere
1:30 "pieces*" yw for the correction :)
Good design with the baffles and whool however not quit sure about the cilindrical manufadturing whatcould cause pellet hitting the inside.
s garage wow very nice easy to make silentcer good job

nice clean shot. i have a Gamo .22 Bone Collector. that FPS @ 1400 fps.....whoa daddy....that's some SPEED. I think wit h premiums I'm only 975 fps. I'm not sure I could do your kill shot with this rifle.
I would have looked for a wooden dowel the diameter you needed for the baffles, and then just cut slices from it. Seems a lot easier than trying to fab 5 pieces separately.
I thought the same thing. smarter not harder
Cosmetically, it looks nice but that's a lot of work for less than 1% of noise reduction.
You are right. I meant to say 15%.. If you pay attention to the decibel reader, the unsurpassed shot read 66 decibels while the suppressed shot measured 55. We don't even need a calculator for this. The difference is 10 decibels. 10 over 66 is 15%.
Actually dB doesn't work like that. It's kinda weird but there's two ways of looking at dB; one is a 10dB drop "sounds" half as loud, which is subjective, the other is the actual power or energy of 10db is ten fold, so it's only one tenth as loud now. The position of the meter is critical since the gun makes two noises, the muzzle blast and the piston inside. The muzzle blast probably was reduced that much, maybe more, but it does nothing for the piston noise. So from the targets perspective it's huge, from the shooters perspective not very much unless you include the echo of the muzzle blast since he was indoors. Other types of airguns like pneumatic, pcp etc have much more muzzle blast and no piston noise so they'd bennie much more from it.
I like his suppressor, but it's not attached nearly well enough and could easily get you arrested if caught.
In retrospect, I looked further into consumer grade suppressors which are rated between 14 and 20 dB of sound reduction. If this is a standard then his homemade version is coming pretty close at 10 dB.
Some of the measured noise is mechanical rattle made by the gun itself, not the gasses or projectile/missile leaving the barrel. Difficult to say how much of the noise is mechanical, unless it is measured without the presence of expanding gasses.
doesn't seem worth it other than the cool factor oh BTW I meant an outdoor test...if longer would it work better? and does it affect velocity? thank you I enjoyed the build
Great idea.
