madonna was a bad-ass. burning crosses & what they represent (racial discrimination, hate) was a major deal to have on MTV back then. Pepsi pulled their sponsorship of Madonna over this video. I think it's amazing and still love this song and this video to this day. I'm proud of her for the message on this.
My perception….In the video, the burning crosses during the dream sequence represent the intimidation she felt from the killers. Her dancing with her back to them is her realizing she must turn away from that fear to do the right thing. I can’t think of any video that packed more really meaningful symbolism into it. This video was better than most films. But the background, real life story of the risks she took and the backlash she weathered for it is truly epic. She was, indeed, a bad ass. She may be called the Queen of Pop but she doesn’t get the credit she deserves for what a phenomenal ARTIST she is.
At the time this song was on the Billboard Top 40, Pepsico was owned by the Mormon Church....so EVERYTHING in this video rubbed those folks the wrong way.
Madonna caught shit from every direction over this video. Conservatives were mad about her "cavorting with black people" and kissing a black man's foot, Catholics took offense over the religious symbolism, some civil rights leaders objected to the burning crosses and felt Madonna was exploiting racial issues for self-enrichment, some liberals said she was being patronizing to the black community, and some people thought her use of gospel was what would be called cultural appropriation today. The video caused such a stir that MTV would only play it after 11 PM so as not to scar the children of America. Newscasts reported on the backlash. Just prior to release, Madonna had signed a huge endorsement deal with Pepsi, and they made a commercial featuring Like a Prayer. She knew all hell would break loose after the video came out, so she made sure her contract specified the money was non-refundable. Pepsi broke all ties with her during the controversy, so she got to keep $5 million without having to actually pimp a soft drink.
The Catholic Church fought against her tour in Italy and though she was raised Catholic and went thru Confirmation and thru Catholic school... for her use of Catholic symbology in the Saint stature tainted and use of a stigmata of seen as mocking the nail wounds of Christ in her palms.... They excommunicated her out of the Church.
MIchael Jackson and Madonna will always be the king and queen of pop. Not just for the number of fans. Not just for their amazing singing and dancing skills. Not just for the #1 hits. But because of the massive manner in which they shattered societal norms and brought important issues to the forefront.
Madonna had a pretty good acting career in the late 80s/early 90s. My two faves are Desperately Seeking Susan and A League of Their Own. I was more into alternative/punk/metal growing up, but had a secret love of Madonna. So much talent.
Madonna was anti-racist and this video was incredibly controversial at the time and got banned. She stood up for what she believed in. Always. Madonna is extremely talented, courageous, hard working and creative. She's an incredible dancer too. Haven't heard from her in a long time though. She is 66 years old now and I hope she's doing well. This was a great reaction to an amazing artist. Thank you!! Dive deeper into her work and you won't be sorry.
Gen-x. When this came out, in Louisiana, there was such an outrage that the state government had MTV banned on all cable networks, and the cassette tape was banned for sale in music stores. Of course, that only made those of us in grade school at the time want it all the more and had people do runs to Texas to buy boxes of tapes to resell. Been a long time, but I don’t think the ban lasted very long, but that’s how much outrage she drove. LOVE HER.
Only Madonna can dance in the middle of burning crosses and turn such a shocking symbolism we use to associate to racism and kkk into something sexy and impactant, remembering and challeging us precisely the opposite of what that symbolism means. She is a genius and a GREAT artist, the GOAT, I admire her so much.
Madonna was brave with this video, which cost her a lot at the time, including the loss of a multi-million dollar Pepsi sponsorship. Arguably her best song and one of the greatest music videos of all time.
She got to keep the millions of $$$ perhaps 5 mil.....as it was not refundable so she did not lose the money.. just sponsorship in commercials and the commercial that used the song was basically... only played on-air once.
"I would imagine she did this first take". YES! this is the original one-take demo vocal. She did that with a lot of her songs. She's all about the real emotion in the voice, not the perfection and vocal gymnastic showing-off.
It's so crazy to see a young person putting the pieces together on their own. Like, he wasn't there for all the controversy in the news and magazines and every where but I was so I can't imagine experiencing that for the first time without all the context of the 90s culture
This was before autotune. She had an incredible voice when she was young. If you want to hear her live version, I recommend the version from her Blonde Ambition tour (1990).
I'm so glad you discovered the most famous singer in the world. Madonna is a living legend. Beloved by billions. Every female singer is compared by madonna. Keep with madonna and fine out why she has 50 #1 dance songs 400 million record sales. 40 year career. And still on top even today. She is compared to Michael Jackson, beatles, and elvis. There is only one Queen and that is MADONNA
Madonna is now 66 years old. In fall of 2023 and through the first several month of 2024, she did a Celebration Tour (farewell tour) to 91 cities in Europe and the Americas. She then did a free concert in Brazil to over 2 million people
This song was condemned by the Vatican. Madonna loved causing controversy to help her career. We thought the song was great! Madonna and a chorus singing about oral sex...I miss the 80s. LOL
Madonna was already well established before this late 80s song... so it did not make her. Still, the showing a wrongful accused Black man was relevant. The mocking of Catholic symbology clearly was what it was by Madonna who said she wanted to F ** U a Black man on a alter. So.... that aspect clearly need not be used, but for her mocking of the Faith she was raised in and educated thru in a Catholic school. Point is.... she had a grudge and used a song that was really not about a hatred of a Church as it was seen .... and the Catholic Church in particular. Just totally disagree it was done as it was merely to advance her career already at a peak or Pepsi would not have pre-paid her 5-mil $$$ and drop her as their sppnsor and that money she did not have to give back.
Please keep going down this rabbit hole and watch the trajectory of the world's greatest female pop star. Begin with Bordetline, Express Yourself, La Isla Bonita, Cherish, Vogue, Frozen, Take a Bow, Hung Up, and Jump. Be sure to watch the official videos because they're works of art as you have seen. There are dozens of other Madonna songs that could go on this list but this is just a starter kit 😊
Madonna is my 🐐 of female pop singers from the 80s & 90s. Check out Live to Tell, Cherish, and Dress You Up, I think you will love all three! It doesn’t hurt that she’s one of the most beautiful women in history too 😉
Madonna Louise Veronica Ciconne; the Bay City Michigan Italian Catholic Girl who moved to New Yok at 19 with only $35 to her name, dreamed big, persevered and became the biggest pop icon ever. Her strict Catholic upbringing gave her the discipline and inherent rebellion to push every boundary. Madonna (yes, it's her real name) is an icon and an original.
She has been in many movies, Evita was one of her best, she won a golden globe award for it, she was snubbed for the Oscars..My favorite movie of hers was the panned Body of Evidence...I loved it! most of her movies were panned, mainly because she is Madonna
She's not the greatest actress...and when the role fits her like a glove she can knock it out of the park. But otherwise...her bad movies are really bad (Shanghai Surprise for example) but I do love the ridiculousness of Body of Evidence and Who's That Girl.
Yes, lots of symbolism in this video. Unfortunately, many conservatives had racist pushback on the video and accused her of blasphemy, though I think this video has aged well. Also, not everyone agreed back in the day with the greatness of her voice, though I always liked it myself. Finally, yes she starred in a couple of 80s movies, but they were forgettable and panned by critics.
This song had blowback...people did not like the religious stuff she did, they didn't like the interacial thing, they didn't like "black Jesus" . Some stations wouldn't play it and there was protests.

Glad you're doing a Madonna song another good one is live to tell if you would do the video one you would see clips of at close range it's very cool❤❤❤❤❤❤
This video was perceived as incredibly transgressive when it came out in 1989. Folks were shocked! After this album she released The Immaculate Collection (which featured Justify My Love, written by Lenny Kravitz and Ingrid Chavez) and then did The Blonde Ambition Tour, which revolutionized the pop live concert experience. You should check some of that out next!
She was in a few movies back in the day, and I think the one that most readily comes to mind is "A League of Their Own" a comedy set in WW II era USA about the ladies baseball league. It also had Tom Hanks, Geena Davis and Rosie O'Donnell in it.
The first time i ever heard Madonna I was around 13, and it was Papa Don't Preach. I was instantly enthralled. Probably like every other person seeing the video and hearing that beautiful, throaty voice for the first time. But this one and Crazy for You are my two favorites!
she has performed this track numerous times throughout her tours over the years. each of them are simply fantastic in their own way. you should check them out. Great reaction.
She did many movies of varying quality. Her first movie role, which people talk about most, was as Susan in Desperately Seeking Susan. For me I personally also want to give a shout out to her playing Breathless Mahoney in Dick Tracy.
This one has been a classic since the day it came out. ALSO: from "The Immaculate Collection", check out "Cherish" (nobody ever does, it seems), Express Yourself; and La Isla Bonita. GREAT.
I remember when this video come out and all the controversy around it, and to this day I still don't understand it. But we got to remember that Madonna has always shocked people, I personally still like her older stuff, but not so much her new stuff. And as for her acting, well let's just say that her role in Evita was probability her best proformance as an actor.
*Madonna made several movies, as did Leon Robinson, the guy/saint in this video! "Who's That Girl?" was an early career vehicle to capitalize on her exploding popularity in the early 80s. So many iconic bangers. Check out "Ray of Light" for something very different!*
Yes Madonna has done many movies, she was the original Taylor Swift as far as being the biggest female pop star…she’s got a great rabbit hole to go down!!!
Madonna has fearlessly fought societal norms and stood up for marginalized groups her entire career. Her music and videos spoke out against racism, homophobia, misogyny and sexism. She had such a backlash for this video from the Catholic church and from conservative America because she dared to kiss a black man as a white woman. But Madonna has always pushed the boundaries, which is what a TRUE artist does. She knew she made people uncomfortable, but she did it because she knows truth is what makes people uncomfortable. She used her music to confront the ugly side of humanity and fight for those who were oppressed. She got a lot of backlash for many years, but she gave zero f*cks and kept doing her thing. It's part of the reason that even today she still sells out concerts.
She was running because she was hurt by other men, the one that helped her was charged because of his skin. Madonna was awesome, I hate seeing people now days being mean to her.
Oh see this was 1989 and it definitely feels like that cusp. I was in...6th grade? When this came out, and it definitely leans a little closer to the early 90s to me now, as far as the vibe goes.
