My favourite season! Buckle up, its quite a ride! And about the sister, no surprise you dont remember, I hear in the streaming version she is always slightly off camera
You missed/were confused by a lot of classic Dracula stuff in the episode. The wolf was a transformed Dracula. He does more than just bats. Xander is eating bugs because he's acting like Renfield from the book and various movies. Dracula was inside that crate of dirt at the beginning because that's how he travels in the novel. Also the actor who played Dracula was also in a TV special about Vlad the Impaler (who is often mistakenly thought as being the real life inspiration for Dracula) which ends with him becoming Dracula, which released only a month after this episode aired.
Dracula could change into wolf as well as bat. That was him up on the roof. In the tales, Dracula's servant Renfield fed on insects...Xander is in Dracula's thrall, like Renfield.
The best recent movie example for that is the 1992 Dracula film by Francis Ford Coppola . He changes into rats and mist and not a wolf, exactly, but more like a werewolf-like beast. Which I think was supposed to be his demon self, when he's doing the thing with Lucy ruclips.net/video/ykkDx49VtEA/видео.html
dude everyone forgets buffy's sister. they mention her a few times in season 1 then shes in so many pics in season 2 but like they barely speak about her
S5 of BTVS was outstanding leading towards a stunning Season. We start off with a 'tongue in cheek' stand alone episode with Buffy V Dracula. Some great comedy moments again with Xander getting all the best lines in his homage to 'Renfield' as a 'spider eating man bitch'. Spike is brilliantly unimpressed by Dracula, and of course we get introduced to her sister in the strange ending. In the dream sequence in S4 when Faith and Buffy are making the bed, Faith says 'little sis is coming' the foreshadowing was there with Buffy's sister's arrival into the show.
THE DAWN OF UMAD!!! and it was surprisingly a bit nostalgic to encounter a wild “tabarnak!” Good ole drac. He checked off a lot of the Bram Stoker points, from multiple types of transformation, the bug eating servant, the… chick pit. Note to self- rewatch Renfield. It rocked. A funny/gorefest great….. uh… sequel to bram stoker’s d-man.
My favourite thing about this episode is, it inspired the title for an entry on TVTropes. A "Butt Monkey" is a character that is treated horribly by their fictional universe (the writers, basically) for laughs.
Ah, RUclips, forever popping up season 5 episode 1 for me instead of season 1 episode 1 when someone starts out the show. But that's okay, because season 5 is by far the best season, in my opinion, and it all starts with this final scene of confusion. Settling in for the ride.
Original episodes were 4x3 aspect ratio with 1 exception in S6 iirc. They took some heat on releasing the widescreen videos which have a few problems since they weren't meant to be released.
"What the fuck?!" is exactly the reaction you were supposed to have. Just wait. A lot of TV shows that had been the old format when widescreen around this time -- check to see - - maybe this was the first Buffy episode filmed for widescreen?
The whole line didn’t make the edit but did you notice Dracula’s line, then end of which is @17:34 ? “You think you know what you are…what’s to come. You haven’t even begun.” That was also said by Tara (or at least, the image of Tara) to Buffy in the S4 Finale. :)
YES! He also told Buffy that the reason she can't resist him is because doesn't want to. In their first scene together Buffy asks 'Do you know what a slayer is' and Dracula goes 'Do you?', implying he knows more about slayers that she does. And then he goes in with the line from restless. So of course she's intrigued and drinks his blood!
So it was filmed in 16:9 dimension, but was aired and meant to be showed in 4:3. Please watch in 4:3 if you can. There are a ton of errors in the 16:9 like seeing equipment, even crew members at times. There is only one episode broadcasted in 16:9 and it was intentional.
I believe every episode up to this point has been 4:3. She just accidentally ran the wrong file, I guess? Season 5 is definitely the worst for the widescreen re-unmaster (season 3 has some really bad moments, too), so it is extra important that she avoid it happening again.
They don't really dwell on it, but you can see that Buffy really isn't "Patrolling" anymore. Killing is scratching that DEEP Slayer itch. Faith totally got her rocks off on it, she even called Buffy out about it in "Bad Girls", and you can see it in the wild, abandoned dance at the Bronze. Buffy suppressed it again after the killing of the Deputy Mayor, but channeling the First Slayer has reawakened the Apex Predator inside.
It's fine to watch it in widescreen, just as long as you remember that if anything weird happens, like camera crew in the shot, or the top of people's heads being chopped off, or colours looking flat, or scenes meant to be at night looking like it's day time, etc, is down to the remaster being completely messed up, and not the original makers. The original is better, but the story's the same.
Since you don't seem to be all that familiar with Dracula, I recomend the movie with Gary Oldman. Quite a few changes from the book, but it's such a good film! (as long as Keanu's accent doesn't drive you crazy!)
Over the years I’ve come to appreciate Keanu as a human so much more than as an actor that I went from being absolutely annoyed by his character in Dracula to just being mildly embarrassed for him. “Get his talentless ass off my screen!!!!” eventually morphed into “Bless his heart, he’s trying his best.” An actor’s real offscreen character means a lot more than an actor’s fictional onscreen character in my book.
@@stevesheroan4131 He does seem like a nice guy, but I do expect actors to do a good job, because it's exactly that, a job. Anyway, I just laugh at the accent!
@MrLorenzovanmatterho LOL that too - but I leaned into Random because Dracula's abilities are beyond what most vampires can do in the Buffyverse, the closest being the Master who did have some additional powers. But Dracula doubled down, and then some. Common Domain explains how they had no problem using the character from a writing perspective, while Random is that they did so at all. I like some of the theories about why, though.
Great reaction as always! Nice that we finally get to see more of Buffy’s sister after she mostly played a small role in the past seasons, other than those few times she was featured a bit more. 👍.
You are watching the HD Remaster in 16:9. Thie show was shot that way but chopped to 4:3 at Joss' request. The remaster was heavily criticized for being rushed and poorly done, with a lot of post completely missing. There is even a shot where the crew was completly visible but was cut out when 4:3 version was aired.
Perhaps you should read the book dracula or watch a movie. Its well known that Dracula's minion renfeild ate bugs and went mad due to Dracula's compulsion. Thats why spike says he has to have his special dirt and bug eaters
Definitely one of the weirdest episodes. The WB put out a Dracula TV movie featuring that same actor as a prelude to a series but it was terrible and the show never happened.
Clearly you have never watched any Dracula films or read the book. There are so many classic vampire references in this episode that you didn't understand: Xander eating bugs, the mind control, the 3 sisters, the wolf, the bats, the coffin with dirt... Perhaps I am showing my age, but I think the Twilight series were terrible, and have spawned a series of vampire shows and movies that are equally boring.
I know that there are going to be idiots calling this a spoiler (it's happened before), but Joyce mentioned at the beginning of season 3 that Buffy is an only child. *It's an information you already had. I'm just reminding you.*
Buffy's sister has always been there. The 3 Summers girls moved to Sunnydale in the pilot episode. You remember Buffy leaving after season 2, don't you remember how sad her sister was and how happy to see her when she got home? Have you been watching the same show? How have you missed a character like that for 4 seasons? 🤔 You need to pay more attention to the show as you watch.
The widescreen remaster is a disaster and looks like it was done by a Fox kindergarten class. Go back to the original. The creators of Buffy, including Joss, have all condemned the remaster. There is a very good exploration of the awfulness of the remaster on RUclips that is worth a watch…Since this episode is full of references to Dracula, the book, well…And careful viewers should immediately recall Restless and Superstar but...
I swear this world could be powered, for generations to come, based solely on the human brain trying to make sense of the ending of this episode.
Dracula has to sleep on his native soil. In the book he gets around the rule by shipping boxes of Romanian dirt to England.
