I remember watching this at a full theater: groups of friends, families with kids, you name it. The movies started and the first minutes the kids did what you know they always do: being restless and making jokes. Some more minutes in and the theater was silent as a tomb: every single person was invested in the movie and reacting to the emotional cues, like the kids arriving at Rohan and then finding their mom, Shadowfax appearing for the first time, Treebeard and his slow speech... Full silence for nearly three hours. That's when you know a movie is good.

I'm watching through the trilogy with my young daughters, we've talked about how many names have an almost matching pair. Like Aragon's (potential) love interests, Arwen and Eowen, Boromir and Faramir, Sauron and Saruman, Gondor and Mordor, Theoden and Theodred. To me it's implied an almost yin/yang good/evil aspect, or at least a this or that choice, lol.

Spot on analysis of the Boromir situation. He was pushed by his father, but was a good man who went with the fellowship even if it was against his initial mission. One of the best and deepest characters in the story.

    • @gamester512
      @gamester512 2 года назад +37

Boromir was also the most "human" character at his core as well. Deep down, he was a truly good and kind man, albeit a flawed one (and all humans are inherently flawed in some way, it's just part of who we are, it's how we overcome those flaws that matters the most). Out of every member of the Fellowship, it was Boromir who focused the most by far on the weaker and more vulnerable members of the group (the four hobbits), hence why he helps to train the Hobbits to fight, and as they try to cross the mountain pass, it is Boromir who warns that the pass "will be the death of the little ones".
Boromir only tried to take the One Ring from Frodo because the Ring itself preyed upon Boromir's noble desire to save and protect his people, it twisted Boromir's selflessness and compassion in an attempt to turn him into something that he truly was not: a power-hungry madman. And that's the precise reason why it had to be Frodo to carry the One Ring, and not one of the "stronger" members of the group. As noble and strong as Aragorn, Legolas, Gimli, Boromir, and Gandalf might have been, the One Ring would nonetheless have worn them down and twisted them soon enough. The Hobbits however have an innate resistance to the corruption of the One Ring, the only reason Bilbo & Gollum (who himself used to be a Hobbit) became so twisted and obsessed with the One Ring was because of prolonged and near-constant exposure to the One Ring. Frodo however had really not had any real exposure to the Ring while it was in Bilbo's possession, so the One Ring has to try and wear down Frodo's resolve and willpower the hard way, and as powerful as the One Ring is, that will not be an easy or quick task for it to accomplish.

@@gamester512 THANK YOU. Boromir definitely was the most "human" out of all the members of the Fellowship. He was the one that looked out for the hobbits as well after Gandalf fell in Moria. While the rest did respect and cared for the hobbits, Boromir sympathized the most and even had actual fun with them. If they ever swung by a tavern, I'd imagine he'd be the one learning drinking songs from Merry and Pippin.

Same! I hate when people crap on Frodo as if he was useless and weak. Yeah, Sam was the reason he got as far as he did, but that's all he had to deal with (hard though it was). Frodo was physically and psychologically tortured carrying the ring, that is no small thing. He was incredibly resilient, even going so far as to literally crawl when he felt like he couldn't go any further. Frodo is a beast and deserves as much credit as Sam gets. They were a team through and through.

Before that, Bilbo had it, and had had it since he was 51 until he voluntarily gave it up at 111 (3001).
The Ring was in Frodo's possession for those 17 years, but he did not carry it with him! And this is the only way he can spread his "poison".
And the journey to Mordor did not take 2 to 3 years, but "only" 11 months. With the return journey to the Shire it was 13 months, Frodo even says that in the movie! You must already pay attention a little while watching a movie.

There is this phrase that I like…
“Words mean stuff.” Had = owned, possessed.
I never said he wore the ring for 17 years but he WAS in possession of the ring for 17 years before the journey, No?
Are we to assume that this did nothing to his aging, for example?
I was trying to point out the timeline for those who might not understand how long Frodo was in possession of the ring and I’m not wrong.

It's so interesting that you said "an Angel of Gandalf", because that's exactly what Gandalf is. He's one of the Maiar - Angelic beings who helped to create the world, but less powerful than the Valar. It is the Valar who sent Gandalf back.
Crash-course in the cosmology of the legendarium: Eru Iluvatar (God) created the Ainur, who all sung a vision of the world into existence. Eru then told them that they could enter into the world and make it real, but they would be bound to it. Thirteen of the most powerful Ainur entered the world (Ea, or Arda), and set about getting it ready for the coming of the Children of Iluvarar (Elves and Men). These Ainur are known as the Valar. One of those Vala was Melkor, who became the first Dark Lord, rebelling against the designs of Eru. He is basically Tolkien's version of Satan, a fallen angel.
Many weaker Ainur entered Arda to help the Valar, and these are known as the Maiar. Gandalf and the other Wizards are Maiar who were sent to help Middle Earth in human form, about 1,000 years into the Third Age, 2,000 years before LOTR takes place. Sauron and the Balrogs are also Maiar, who sided with Melkor before he was defeated.

21:17 Gandalf told Frodo Gollum’s original name. In the film it was told to him in Moria, in book it was in Bag End.
23:07 Gandalf already was an angel from the get-go. Him, Saruman, Sauron and the Balrog are all angelic beings called Maiar. The Five Wizards (1 white, 1 grey, 1 brown, and 2 blues) were sent to Middle Earth to help defeat Sauron, with the White Wizard being the one in charge, and the arch-nemesis of Sauron. Since Saruman wasn’t doing his JOB, Gandalf got to come back with said job and the power that comes with it, hence why he’s “Saruman as he should have been.”
26:04 he’s the heir of Isildur he’s the great-great(add 32 more greats)grandson of the dude who fucked up him the first time. Also if he becomes king and unites the people, they’ll be harder for Sauron to conquer.
27:38 when they departed Lorien and Galadriel gave them gifts, they also gave them cloaks that work like camouflage.
43:28 Arwen will lose her immortality and she will eventually die, but Aragorn will still die much sooner than her. The natural lifespan of his people are around 200, but Arwen would live for another 300 years after his natural passing.

These and many other tales are recounted in the book The Silmarillion which tells the history of Middle Earth long before The Lord Of The Rings.

The poem that King Theoden recites as gets armed is called "The Lament of the Rohirim" and Tolkien based it on a real life poem.
The poem was written in the early medieval ages and is Anglo-Saxon based.
It deals with a lonely figure, riding aimlessly through the world, after his kin, his people and his lord have been killed in a war.
He laments his loneliness and describes how it is to be last of his kin, how it is to loose your lord after you have sworn unbound fealty to him.
Finally, he concludes that all earthly kingdoms are of fragile matter, destined and doomed to eventually crumble. The only kingdom that is eternal is the kingdom of heaven. Only in god, the heavenly father, can you find eternal love that will last forever.
It is quite a long poem, but certainly worth the read

Mithril is a metal that when woven into armour is lighter and more efficient than normal chain mail. Gandalf describes it in the book "Mithril! All folk desired it. It could be beaten like copper, and polished like glass; and the Dwarves could make of it a metal, light and yet harder than tempered steel. Its beauty was like to that of common silver, but the beauty of mithril did not tarnish or grow dim."

But even years before the war Saruman used the greed of some of the hobbits - esp. Frodo's stupid and bossy cousin Lotho - to buy big amounts of food from the Shire for his growing army. Saruman creates his army feeding it with Shire produces. So this food storage is part of those Shire shoppings of Saruman :)
