    For many decades, Tolkien's fantasy epic was considered "unfilmable". It was simply too grand-scale, too complicated, too dense to put to film. And yet, now that Peter Jackson did it, it feels like it's a film series that will never be out of date. Every frame of it is still a gorgeous painting.

    • @marks2807
      @marks2807 2 года назад +43

      The sad thing is that Peter Jackson made these master class films yet the Tolkien story that should have been super easy to make was turned into an almost unwatchable mess of a trilogy. They really should have made the Hobbit one movie then they could have done the story without adding a bunch of side plots.

      Jackson wanted it to be a 2 parter, but he was forced to stretch it into 3

    • @monkeymox2544
      @monkeymox2544 2 года назад +20

      @@marks2807 imo the problem with The Hobbit wasn't that they made it into three films - I respect the intention behind it, showing us all the things in the background that are relevant to LOTR - the problem was that it was tonally confused. The Hobbit is a children's book. LOTR, and Jackson's adaptation, is a more mature epic fantasy. You can't just slap The Hobbit into Jackson's cinematic universe and call it a day, because you end up with grand epic narratives contrasting with scenes of dwarves lobbing plates around and singing a weirdly synchronised impromptu song about it.
      They should have either made The Hobbit as written, but not set in Jackson's universe, or completely adapted it to suit the tone of the original trilogy. Canonically, The Hobbit as written is Bilbo's retelling of real events, so my head-canon has always been that the real journey was much darker, but Bilbo made it more whimsical. You could argue that in the film they do use Bilbo's retelling as a framing device, so one could interpret the film in this way anyway, but we're always jumping into events that Bilbo knows nothing about so that wouldn't make much sense.

    Bro, Tolkien was like the og fantasy author. He spent nearly 40 years creating an entire world history, complete with thousands of years worth of lore, hundreds of characters, and even made his own languages. He is responsible for many of what we consider fantasy clichés today. That being said, DO NOT sweat it if you don't understand some stuff. It's 110% understandable.

The behind-the-scenes stuff show that the actor was supposed to throw it away from Aragorn's face and they would use some camera angle trickery to make it seem like it would hit, but the actor accidentally threw it directly at Aragorn, so he actually deflected it for real (he had some sword training for this movie, but even then it's crazy that it happened)

    Boromir is my favorite character. He's weak to the ring and almost betrays Frodo, only to come back strong and pull all the Uruk-Hai to him. He goes out like a champ, and his dying speech to Aragorn always breaks my heart. You get a bit more about why he was how he was if you watch the Extended Edition of Two Towers.

    The scene where Boromir is tempted on the mountain…
    The vocals that are in the music is Elvish, it represents the “voice of the ring”
    It says (JRR Tolkien actually made Elvish a real language), “the Strength, the Weapon, the needs of the valiant…”
    Exactly what Boromir needed to help and save his homeland and people. As Gandalf said, “I would use this ring from a desire to do good, but through me, it would word a power to great and terrible to imagine…”

    Imagine how those of us who saw this in the theater felt when the movie ended and we had to wait for a YEAR to see part 2. Noooo! BTW, since you asked, Gandalf knew that a hobbit was probably the only choice of being given the ring since Hobbits are so pure of heart and innocent. Men, Wizards, and other races would be too susceptible to corruption from the ring's power. Of course nobody is completely immune, as we see with Bilbo's obsession with the ring and even Frodo, later. Even though hobbits are "child size", Frodo and his friends are about in their 20's in human years, unless I'm wrong and they are a bit older than that?

  • @noraa1991

    the hobbit's feet are tough, thick, and hairy, basically as if they're wearing boots at all times, so their feet are quite resistant to the elements beyond normal means so it's easier for them to cross difficult terrain, like deserts, mountains, or rocky areas
