    This video from Sears PartsDirect will show you what to do when the “Element On” light stays lit constantly on your stovetop. When that light stays on all the time, you can’t tell at a glance whether all surface burners are off. A failed contact in one of the surface element switches causes this problem. This video will help you figure out which switch is broken, so you can replace it and get back to cooking.

    Transcript:
    The Element On light gets power through the wire that connects to a spade on each of the surface element switches. The wire color and spade label on the element switch can vary by model, but often the wire is purple and the spade is labeled “P”. When you turn on a burner, the surface element switch sends power through the purple wire attached to the “P” spade. Current travels through the purple wire to the Element On light so it lights up. When you turn off a burner, the surface element switch opens an internal contact and stops sending power to the Element On light so the light turns off. At least that’s what’s supposed to happen. When the Element On light stays lit even though you have all the burners turned off, one of the switches has a stuck contact that is sending power to the Element On light constantly. Let’s find that broken switch. To do this troubleshooting, you need a nut driver to remove the top back panel. You also need electrical tape to insulate the ends of wires that you disconnect from the surface element switches during testing. First pull out the range so you can get to the back of the switches. Unplug the range and remove the top back panel to reveal the switches and wires. This purple wire starts at the double-element switch on this range and then connects to each of the other switches before it ends up at the Element On light. To find out which switch failed, we’ll disconnect the wire from each of the surface element switches one at a time. With the range still unplugged, pull the purple wire off the double element switch and tape the end with electrical tape so the wire doesn’t short to metal inside the range. This is very important, if the wire shorts to metal, you can be electrocuted by touching any metal on the range when you plug it back in. Plug the range in and see if the Element On light stays lit. If the light doesn’t come on, the double-element switch is your problem. You’ll need to replace it. Watch our video “Replacing a Range Surface Element Control Switch” to learn how. If Element On light stays lit when you plug in the range, we’ll move on to testing the next switch. Remember to unplug the range again before pulling the wires from the next element switch. You don’t want to touch live wires and get shocked. Trust me, it hurts and can cause serious injury. Next, unplug the lower wire harness connector from the second switch. This range uses plastic clips to help connect the wires to the single surface element switches, so plug the right side of the clip back in while keeping the purple wire unplugged. The plastic plug keeps the purple wire from shorting to metal so you don’t have to use electrical tape to insulate the end of the wire during this part of the test. If your range doesn’t have this type of plastic plug, tape the end of the wire with electrical tape to prevent it from shorting against metal. Plug the range back in and see if the Element On indicator lights up. If the Element On light is off, you’ve found the bad switch. That’s the one you’ll need to replace. If the Element On light stays on, the second switch is okay and you’ll have to test the third switch. Leaving the first two switches disconnected, unplug the range again and disconnect the purple wire from the third surface element switch. Plug the right side of the clip back in while keeping the purple wire unplugged. Replace the third element switch if the Element On light is off when you restore power to the range.

I moved that stove out of its holding pin and unplugged it and Presto the door unlocked! I do not like where the plug is located down near the floor baseboard behind the stove period that is so inconvenient. I think we need some redesigns here. Anyway, thank you so much I do appreciate you and I will be Consulting your great tutorials for the next problem I have to solve as a widowed woman alone in this world with no help whatsoever but my own grit and your videos!

    Serious question:
    If I choose not to repair this issue, can it be hazardous? What I mean is, will the stove/element have a chance to turn on in the middle of the night ?

    • @searspartsdirect
      @searspartsdirect  3 года назад +3

      The internal switch contact for the element light is separate from the contacts that supply electric current to the burner’s heating element. Although we recommend that you replace the bad surface element switch, the stove or element won’t likely turn on in the middle of the night due to a failed element light contact. Not fixing the broken element switch can cause confusion regarding whether an element is on or not-which could create a burn hazard. We hope this information helps. If you need further assistance, let us know.

    Thanks for the great video! Now, help, I just replaced the left front element (w10823716) on my Maytag (MER6875BAF). The new element works fine, but now the “On Indicator” light does not shut-off. I installed all wiring in the same place, but one terminal was the wrong size. I used one of the extra leads, shortened it, and made a small jumper wire to make the transition front a small terminal to the large terminal on the new element. Did I wire something incorrectly? Thanks….. Jim

    • @searspartsdirect
      @searspartsdirect  4 года назад +3

      Continuing to use the range with a broken element light can pose some safety risks if everyone in the household doesn't know, understand and remember about the failure and assume all burners are off when one is still on. It's best to fix the range as soon as possible so it works properly but you can continue to use the range as long as everyone in the house knows and understands the failure and checks to make sure all burners are off when the range isn't being used. Ranges with a ceramic glass top also have a hot surface light that will turn on when the cooktop is hot so if the hot surface light works, then it's generally safer to use the range with a broken element on light.

    Dumb question: If the element on light stays on all the time, shouldn't I be looking for the disconnect that causes it to turn OFF? None of the burners are turned on. In the video, you disconnected one wire, and the light turned ON and then you said that was the broken switch. But I thought I should be looking for the light that turns OFF. Not sure why I'm having trouble conceptualizing this!

    • @searspartsdirect
      @searspartsdirect  3 года назад +1

      You are looking for the switch that doesn't allow the light to stay lit when you disconnect the purple wire. If you disconnect a wire from a switch and the light stays on, then that switch likely isn't the failed switch because the light is still getting current through a bad switch. In very rare situations, 2 or more switches could have failed at the same time. That scenario is covered at the end of the video. We hope this information helps. If you need further assistance, let us know.

    • @searspartsdirect
      @searspartsdirect  5 лет назад

      If the light won't turn on when you use any of the elements, then the light bulb may be burned out or a wire may be detached from the light. Unplug the range and check the wiring connections on the light. Reconnect any loose wires. If the wires are connected properly, you'll likely need to replace the light. If only one element switch fails to turn on the light, then you'll likely need to replace that element switch. Unplug the range before replacing parts. We hope this information helps. If you need more assistance, let us know.
