When using a nuclear gauge you are supposed to stand at least 10' away for safety and not to disrupt the moisture reading. Also using it so close to a roller may disrupt the readings.
Agreed entirely about safe distances from the gauge. No need to be squatting down beside it whilst the source is exposed. However, being a thin layer density gauge, this one has no moisture source. Only density.

Not really, minimum 1m about 3.5' away should be safe and practical. 3m roughly 10' clearance for a standard count.
