Today is an exciting day for the exterior of my fixer upper house!! Jay & I are installing my new DREO porch ceiling fan and it looks amazing! After that, my mom and I are working on cleaning up the pile of stones and building a stone wall!
Hey there! My name is Abby and I recently bought a MAJOR fixer upper house. I am SO excited to work on fixing it up this old house and turning it into my dream home. I can't wait to take you on this journey with me! I am planning to DIY as much as I can and learn so much about home renovations along the way. I am starting out totally clueless so I am sure it will be a grand adventure! If you finish the porch ceiling with beadboard and paint it light blue like the sky. Its supposed to keep wasps and hornets from building nests.

You ladies definably inherited some "old world artisanship" from your ancestors. Your granddad would be proud. You turned an unsightly pile of rubble into an attractive landscape feature.

Great Idea! You turned a "pile of construction debris" into an eye-pleasing feature! You've got another thing in the garden you'll love looking at. Good job both of you!
If you have any standing water on the property, you can use eco-friendly "pucks" to control mosquitos. I used them in my pond & also installed bat houses on the perimeter of my property & it worked great.
I can see friends and family using the stone wall to sit on while you host a summer party or fall. Even if it is temporary it can be useful and fun by sitting a pot of beautiful flowers on it. Endless possibilities!!

Mother and Daughter are looking sound to me ,that is truly leadership prospects . Abbie you would now understand that the family who works together will stay lovingly close to each other .This week I took a tour a tourer throughout the eastern agriculture areas for 4 days and influenced new friendships and relationships . The rock wall is now a outdoor seat dear .

Nice work girls. It really makes things look so much prettier and organized. When you’re having coffee on the porch, maybe mom would bring a pie if you asked her nicely! I think the next step is putting paint on the walls.

Very nice ŵaĺlfor just getting the stones out of the way. 😊 Behind the wall a random sowing of marigolds would look nice. Pots of red geraniums would be a nice touch in front of the wall. Whatever, the wall looks really nice. The two of you did a super job. 😊😊😊

I greatly enjoy watching all this hard work turning a pile of rubble into a very pretty rock wall and I wish I had the strong back to work that way. I love to create but in my late sixties and my back can’t handle picking up heavy things. I’m so happy for you Abby and watching you call your mom “mama” reminds me of when my mom was still here and I spent time with her in her garden. Cherish this forever. There’s a guy on RUclips … his channel is Surburban Acre . He tells how to build a wall in 3 easy steps. 1. Dirt work- dig a shallow ditch 2. Crushed rock and stacking boulders 3. Finalize top row…but I think yall did a great job - watching from Lake Wales, Florida

Good idea for the ceiling fan for the porch. You won't regret it! Your home is going to be fabulous! I particularly love how you and Jay put the piece of leaded glass over the bathroom door upstairs. Keeping what history you can is commendable. I've been watching for a long time, over a year. I'm looking forward to seeing what you do with the land, it's really a cool location. It would be nice when you can afford to buy the barn next door!

Make a living wall with succulents. I was thinking about that for the bigger river wall. River would be a great backdrop, small stone patio with a bistro table set. Brunch by the river.

You could put white soffit under your porch roof. It would allow for air flow, if the metal roof had condensation. The white would make it brighter. Less spots for bee, wasps to build nests.
Abby take some stones and beef up the stones around your new plants. It will help with weeds growing between the gabs too

I could never understand how pushing the air down would cause a breeze and make it cooler in the hot months since heat rises, wouldn't that just push the hot air down over you? And for winter having it move the air upwards wouldn't that just move the colder air from the floor over you and make you feel colder? I have my fan set in the opposite way from what every tells you to do because we have a very small livingroom our fan is in and it works better for us that way. Love your stone wall! I can just see it with some plants in pots on top of it.

So we built the wall. And all the wall was joined together to half its height, for the people had a mind to work. That was awesome 😎
With all the work you went through with that Stonewall, it would’ve been nice if you would’ve put a small L shaped stone wall at the entrance to your driveway - on either side. Not too close to vehicles, but it would enhance the look of your entrance. Could even put a solar light on either side on top.

To cut sandstone scribe a deep line, into the Stone and tap it like cutting Glass. Use Mason Chisels and sledgehammers of various sizes. depending on the amount of force need to break the stone. Learnd by doing!

That's a super "cool" fan (pun intended). It isn't the most expensive one I've seen but it isn't the cheapest either. It will be a welcome addition to your summer outdoor porch activities.

I love the wall!!! What’s nice is that while you continue to garden and work on the yard you can extend the wall as you need to keep your material in one place for future projects. Even if you choose to leave it though it’s beautiful to look at.
