  • We are FINALLY PAINTING!!! I cannot believe the difference this makes... you won't believe it either!
Hey there! My name is Abby and I recently bought a MAJOR fixer upper house. I am SO excited to work on fixing it up this old house and turning it into my dream home. I can't wait to take you on this journey with me! I am planning to DIY as much as I can and learn so much about home renovations along the way. I am starting out totally clueless so I am sure it will be a grand adventure! Follow along on my channel if you want to see DIY projects, renovating a house on a budget, and I am sure a lot of craziness along the way! I'm just a girl with a drill and a dream.

As a professional painter for over 30 years, I can guarantee that spraying does not give you a shiny finish. Nor do you have to roll after it. Anyone that rules after spraying doesn’t have a clue how to spray correctly. And there definitely is a right and a wrong way to do it. The finish you have with your paint is dictated by the paint you buy. They come in flat, eggshell, satin, semi gloss and gloss. I recommend eggshell as you can actually wipe it down. Flat paint you can’t do that with. I also recommend satin or semi gloss for woodwork as it’s a much tougher finish.

      I agree with you 100%
      I’ve been painting for 20+
yrs and never heard of what
she explained, but to each their
own I guess, but man spraying
      is 100% faster. Lol.

Beg to differ. I have matt (flat) paint throughout my house in the UK. It's totally washable. Also we have silk and soft sheen paints that aren't as shiny as eggshell and are also washable.

Hi Abby. You might want to caulk the seams in those storage spaces over eaves even if you choose not to tape them. Little critters and dust can still get into those spaces.

You should have a handle to give you more power, strength and control when you paint. Also, a little known fact. Any spot that didn't get paint is called a "holiday". I was once a painter so that's how I know. But seriously, use a roller handle. You will be surprised how much quicker you get done.

Abby if you use a long wood handle on your paint roller it’s a lot less tiring! Saves a lot of bending over loading the roller to!

It’s crazy how much a coat of primer can take it from looking like construction to a house! I have been here since day one, and it’s been so much fun watching all of the progress. Gosh, you’ll be installing outlets, light fixtures, radiators, and trim work in no time flat! How exciting!

Suggestion - I would designate an outfit just for painting - you have so much painting to do, no sense in getting multiple clothing pieces splattered with paint. Or invest in an inexpensive jump suit.

Abby the house looks great! The color you chose is going to compliment the woodwork and cabinets beautifully. So you have seen cats at your house? Someone probably dropped them there. People are so cruel. But please even if you're not a cat person, take care of them. If you know you don't want to make them your own get them to a no kill shelter where they have a chance of getting adopted. Thank you for sharing your fixer upper story with us!

You know on your boxed windows you ought to see if you could get some marble off cuts and put that in the bottom of your windows. I think it would be beautiful and appropriate for the style of house. I’ve seen people on RUclips cut stone with a circular saw by keeping it wet. Something to think about. Anyway the house looks great. So proud of you!

I helped a friend who did house painting, we used power rollers. They have a learning curve but once you get the hang of em you have up to five gallons of paint for non stop rolling. I believe the ones he had were from Wagner. Maybe could rent something like that from a hardware store.

I agree about the storage spaces. I had a landlord at the who just got the apartments and had guys come in and tape and bed the closets and storage. He said that helped to keep critters out. Because if they find a way in they will invite their friends in and will be oh so hard to get them out. Before he did he tented the place and fumigated it. Then started closing up places that they could get in.
