- I usually create videos on car ownership and the fun, but lately its been oil issues in all vehicles! Today is an update on the oil consumption issue on our 2020 Hyundai Palisade. However in doing research this issue can affect many Kia and Hyundai models.
Todays video goes over the dealership procedure to diagnose this issue.

My 2020 palisade is currently in and getting the engine replaced after 4 times of doing the 1,000 mile tests. I too, was right at the 50,000 mile mark! It has been a PAIN and a lot of frustration from me!!they did give me a brand new loner car for the time being but they have had my palisade for the last month- after the last oil consumption test they hold onto it before deciding on what their plan is. Let’s hope the new engine situation from here on out is.
That's too bad but I appreciate you letting us know! Hope it's not too long to wait for your car back. How much oil did you lose each interval?
2020 Palisade owner here. I have had the oil religiously changed each time BEFORE the mileage due on the sticker they put on the windshield. Burned a quart every thousand miles, something I'd expect from a 60s or 70s car. At 30k it had to have valves 1, 3, 5 replaced. Now at 41k all valves are being replaced, head gasket replaced, basically rebuilding the top half of the engine. It's been in the shop at the dealer for over 60 days and no word. They won't call me, they won't admit to anything. I do have a loaner, but it's a Sonata, and I'm still making payments on a Palisade. When (if) I get it back, I'll file lemon law papers, and I'll buy another Hyundai when you put the loaded gun to my head.
I appreciate you sharing. I am not envious in the least... Hyundai has really made a mess. I am not looking forward to the final update after our 4th check of the oil level...
please update the outcomes.....consumers benefit from experiences from people like you and it's invaluable.....I'm 6'5" and found the Pallisade comfortable for a very tall man but I hate spending money on car repairs....maintenance is one thing but when the warranty expires it's on your dime. I was looking at the Toyota 4Runner but it's a gas guzzler.....but it seems like you're spending more on oil than gas......I really feel for your plight@@CoderMan
We’re at 83k miles here and the last 3 oil changes all showed abnormal oil consumption. Unfortunately, the closest dealership to me requires you to make your oil changes two months in advance and my wife drives way too many miles for work for us to be able to get to the dealer for every oil change.
They won’t diagnose anything unless the services are done with them. Looks like we’ll be trading in our paid off 2020 limited next year and going back to Honda/ Toyota so being out of warranty isn’t a worry.
I’m glad for the update.
Happy to help!
Thanks for posting this. Curious to see how this is handled and resolved but definitely is a pain asking a customer to come in every 1K miles. I've heard that replacing the PCV valve that sometimes helps. You can search for it, there is a video in YT.
Yah the procedure is quite annoying, but hopefully we get to the bottom of it. Thanks for the tip on the PCV valve. Hopefully we won't need to do any repairs on our own.
Will be interesting to see the final outcome will be on this. Deff out of the norm to consume quart in 1000 miles for a vehicle like that
Right?! I'd expect this with a race car...
@@CoderMan yeah exactly
We have a 2021 Palisade. White. Same exact issue. Brought it in 6 months ago and had the same 1000 mile challenge where we just can’t easily bring it in that often. We had a similar half quart down after 1000 miles. They tried to say it’s within normal oil consumption range. So we have a 2.5 year old car with 55k miles and it burns oil like crazy. My wife drives the car and is atrocious at anything car maintenance related so it’s all on me to constantly check her oil. This seems unsustainable to me.
We have 4 cars (5 drivers) and we still have our 2005 Honda pilot. It has 225k miles and burns zero oil, the oil stays clean and car runs mint. By comparison this Palisade situation is insane. I’m considering getting rid of it, even though my wife adores the car.
Last time I had a car with this issue was a 2010 Honda Accord, that was hit by a drunk driver (we were stopped). They repaired the damage for about 10k, but from then on that car burned oil just like this, likely from friction in the engine due to parts being micrometers off after the accident, and so I traded it in and took the hit before the engine went on it’s own.
I have very little faith at this stage in this engine for the Palisade. Burning a quart every 2k miles sounds like bad news, and as of now seems like Hyundai will not help.
I wonder if they would claim a major engine issue was due to owner negligence by not monitoring oil and have it not be under warranty?
I think the 4 checks for oil drop is pathetic, but its the only option until a lawsuit appears. I agree its a pain, especially when someone who drives the car works full time. I have a 1953 Chevy that burns oil, that I expect. A 2020 modern vehicle, I do not. Its bad design.
My wife Hyundai Palisade is swallowing oil. We didn't know about the recall till after a 100k miles which is just out of warranty. This should be an automatic engine replacement or be able to return car for another one...shitz crazy.
That stinks its over 100k miles now. Hopefully you'll be good just adding oil, be sure to keep on it.
I just bought a 2020 so I’ll have to watch for this. On a side note my previous vehicle (jeep Cherokee) had the same issue. Jeep had an issue with the valve timing at highway speeds allowing oil to get by. Hopefully this will be that simple.
I'm hoping it's something programmable but nothing yet. I'm learning lots of car companies have oil issues on some level. Has to do with such tight tolerances in the build process.
I own a 2020 Palisade it has 64 k miles on it. I have had it serviced every 4 months at the same dealership since Jan 2020 now my Palisade has burned 5.5 quarts of oil since it’s last oil change in July and the Palisade shuts off as it idles down at lights and in traffic. It’s been at the dealership for 6 weeks now with no resolve in sight
6 weeks? That is pretty strange, wonder what they are doing.
I have the same problem with my 2020 Hyundai palisade. We noticed it at the first oil change. We only have 36,000 miles. First appointment with the dealership is tomorrow. Thanks for the heads up!
Did they question you on maintenance at all?
No mention of maintenance, but we have a full record. 36k miles is still too low for any issue like this. More needs to be done on this.
Same here. 70k. And have same oil problems with performance issues
Sadly it's pretty common.
Going through the same thing. It’s crazy that when we brought it in the first time the dealership tried to blame it on another dealership saying they didn’t put oil in the car. Next time they realized that the car has an oil consumption problem and signed us up for the O.C.P. We dropped it off today for our second 1000 mile ck and they told us that we only need to do it twice. They are very inconsistent and it sucks cuz we get the run around a lot. High employee turn over doesn’t help. I think that Hyundai is a good company but the dealerships are making them look bad. Still, should not be having this problem and getting the runaround to boot
Sounds like the typical dealership experience...
Update - dropped Palisade off at Hyundai dealership for "all day appointment" for oil consumption test. Now waiting for Hyundai to schedule appointment to install tamper seals to dipstick/drain plug and start the 4 x 1000 mile check appointments. It's clear that Hyundai wants to make this very difficult so the consumer will simply go away and just add 1 quart of oil every 1K mile. Isn't this an emissions/environmental issue?
Tamper seals? Wow. That's a new one. So now they think customers are going to skew the results? Crazy.
I'm having this problem as well with my 2020 palisade. I was just told to do the 1000 mile check 🤦🏾♀️
Yah its the only real option...
Do you know what the sticker looks like that they put on the dipstick during the oil consumption test?
I wasn't able to find a sticker or other mark, but intentionally didn't mess with things too much.
My 2021 Palisade Limited is 3 1/2 years old with 40,000 miles. This issue must be inconsistent. My Palisade has never used a drop of oil!
It is, which is strange and confusing.
I am also having the issue of excessive oil consumption (483 miles driven since getting the car back from the dealership service department and a little over half of engine oil is gone) on our 2018 Hyundai Sonata with less than 100K miles and, obviously, owned less than 10 years. Currently, we are ready to deal with this lawfully and would like any information on any attorneys who practice products liability cases that are non-injury related in the Greater Seattle area. I only found these firms with a similar open case: Nye, Stirling, Hale & Miller LLP, Sauder Schelkopf LLC, and Walsh, PLLC.
400 miles and already at half? Damn. Worst one I have heard yet.
I am having the same issue. Oil changed one and a half month ago and it was so low to where i could not read it on the dipstick. (i did drive 4000 miles)
Sadly common, 4k should still show oil on the stick. Its maddening.
Taking our 2023 palisade in today has 4000 miles on it,adding -1 to 2 quarts every 1000 miles, will keep updated
Good luck and please do!
My 23 pallisade is the same. My oil level was dry one time and my oil pressure light never went off is one of the worst issues
@@xboxthekid6699ny explains the blown engine problems
After my all day appointment for oil consumption test Hyundai agreed to start the 4 visits at 1K miles testing process. This took multiple calls over 3 weeks to get Hyundai to respond after the all day appt. Will provide updates of how the 4 visits at 1K miles goes. Also, another fun fact about this lemon - the tailpipes extend past the bumper on the back of the SUV. Child opened the back liftgate to get soccer ball while wearing shorts and was burned on the leg by the hot tail pipe.
Thanks for sharing. Crazy on the tailpipe I'll keep an eye on this with the kids around.
2020 palisade going through process now. Has run out of oil twice, completely shut off while driving.
Curious how the dealership handles it
I was going to purchase a palisade. I seen too many issues with oil consumption on all the online forums. I bought the Honda Pilot Trailsport instead.
Honestly its a smart choice, this is not something a consumer should have to deal with.
Tracking this story closely - we have the exact same issue going with Hyundai dealership in Maryland - this will be my last Hyundai - terrible customer service
Sadly i'm hearing lots of the same from other owners, not sure why Hyundai isn't talking about it.
My 2017 Sonata burned oil and Hyundai said 1qt every 1k miles is "normal". It eventually got so bad that i was burning 3-4qts every 1k miles...but this happened immediately after my warranty expired, at around 105k miles. They refused to do anything to help me out. Screw Hyundai, I traded thr Sonata for a 2023 Highlander and will probably stick with Toyota for life.
This is becoming common. It's sad but Hyundai isn't listening to their customers.
I've been dealing with this issue for over a year.
A year? Damn!
One more thing, the first time they performed the oil change, they kept our car for a week. They said they ordered some kind of chemical engine cleaner from Korea. The second time(today) they need it for 2 days. For yours they are only doing a dip stick check. What are they doing to ours? Makes me wonder
That is quite strange, but maybe Hyundai has different processes?
I have a 2020 Palisade and going through the 1000 mile checks now, my car is at 70,000 miles. What did the issue end up being with your car? This is so frustrating. Spent way too much money on this car for having these issues.
Oil burn with no resolution...
Im in the same boat. Ive got a 2020 AWD with 37000. Checked the dipstick half way between oil changes. Nothing on the stick and i mean NOTHING. Towed in. Dealer said they didnt tighten up the drain plug all the way. Weird because there is no oil in my driveway. They said everything was checked and all ok. Said the engine still had 3qts. It takes 7qts! Now, today, i need to get the oil changed, so i go out to check it and again nothing on the stick. I know this engine is screwed and they want to do a consumption test. My wife has said lets just get rid of it and get something else. This is ridiculous for a car to be this new to have these problems. They most definitely do not make them like they use to.
That's insane. We also had one interval with no oil on the dipstick. Definitely new, i'm also looking into a trade.
Search Direct Injection oil consumption and you’ll find that some amount of consumption is NORMAL. All direct injection’s have some level of oil burn, be it a 110k X7 or a 55k Kia. EVs don’t burn any oil….
I'd be concerned if an EV burned oil lol
Update my 2020 Palisade 64k miles after 6 weeks they have now order it a new engine so the dealer doing my engine has 33 engines ahead of mine to replace all Hyundai Brand vehicles. My palisade will be the 4th they have so far and the Palisade just came to market in 2020
Wow, 64k is close to our mileage too...
Owner of a 2021 Palisade (bought new). I was losing a quart due to evaporation every 5000 miles. Catchcan was always full. All of a sudden after 20,000 miles I no longer have oil consumption. Dipstick is still at the full mark every 5,000 miles. Now my catch can is empty when I change the oil. Seems to have resolved itself
That's crazy, no idea how it would just self correct.
@@CoderManI did switch to a different brand oil on the 3rd oil change so that may have been a contributing factor to no more oil consumption.
Which oil
wow its amazing to see this continues and the Kia/ Hyundai group get away with it. dont buy a hyundai and potentially a Kia. My daughter is having this issue with her 2018 hyundai tucson. We have brought the car in 7 times and each time the test requirements change and are forced to start the test over, or they say the other coordinator did take the pics e.t.c. The car has 43k on it, ridiculous.
Nope! Will never buy another.
May look nice, but they are a rolling pile of junk on its way to junkyard. My 04 Acura 3.5RL is almost at full on dip stick at every 4K miles of oil change. I have nearly 285K miles right now and no oil consumption issues. GDI engines are known for oil consumption from what I have heard and have steered clear of any Hyundai / Kia vehicles.
Right on! Honda/Acura are bulletproof. Audi/VW is pretty solid too. Hyundai is out of the conversation.
I did 3 times 1000miles and they change they decide to put a new engine.
Wow that is rare!
My 2016 Hyundai Tucson had the engine replaced due to oil consumption at around 60,000 miles. My wife’s 2018 Sonata 2.0t just had the engine replaced at 80,000 miles. We did no joke, 8 or 9 consumption tests because the dealership jacked up the paperwork. We have a 22 Palisade and this will be my last Hyundai. Moving over to Honda after this for cars/suvs. I’m really disappointed with Hyundai and the quality with the engines.
Same for us, last Hyundai for sure.
Honda's are just as bad I'm a Honda fan till I bought a newer one
It's now 5 oil service visits
Jeez, seems like they want to stretch it out and hope you give up.
@@CoderMan funny story. I didn't check my oil right after the oil test started until I got home and they overfilled it by a QT at least. I took pictures of it but the test is already tainted.
I have the same issue
It's sadly very common.
Sounds a bit passive aggressive on Hyundai's part.
100% agree. They just don't care, as far as i'm concerned.
Thanks.....no way am I buying a Hyundai or Kia.....my son's 2013 Hyundai engine blew......hyundai would not replace it until I proved it was made on the date it was manufactured where there was a known problem
Wow. That doesn't sound fun.
I feel bad for paying 50k for a oil burning suv lol. Remember its a hyundai and kia thing lmao. You get what you pay for.
Overall at 50k its a great vehicle in the 7 seat range, for its size and capability.. they just need to focus on the engine a bit more
@CoderMan 50k for a terrible engine. Engine cost more than anything else in the vehicle.
$50,000 car and you have to add oil? Utter ridiculousness
Yup. Pure craziness.
