The show "His Dark Materials" is really what "The Golden Compass" was. An epic, three-season story about religion and violence in the name of it. It's actually brilliant.

I paid money and saw this movie 3 times at the cinemas upon release. Spent most of my life since wondering where the sequel is/was but now I know that no one else vibed as much as I did

@@valletas I liked it but the biggest problem I saw was the censorship of religious imagery. Which is weird since that’s a key part of the story. The main villains work for a corrupt church government trying to extract “sin” from children in Lyra’s world. Lyra even works with angels throughout the series (in fact it’s how the alethiometer works) and later we learn she and future protagonist Will are to become the “new” Adam and Eve with a researcher from Will’s world named Mary playing the role of the serpent. In hindsight it’s probably a good thing they cut out the ending because what happened to Roger was a real downer.
The image of a little girl wandering around an English college with a sloth around her shoulders is so surreal and hilarious.
That girl also happens to be the reincarnation of Eve from the Bible and the animal is literally her soul separated from her body. Yep...

Oh God, I remember playing this game as a kid. I couldn't get past the area where you're suppose to get the armor for the polar bear from the village and gave up.
Funnily enough, i think i remember being stuck on that same part also lol

That one after the boat level? It was infested with bugs that you had to fight against with minigames, though I never got to find out if I could find the armor since I accidentally deleted the save file while trying to save. (And for context I had gotten to this area the same day I finally got past the boat area after a decade, since it was really unclear what I was supposed to do over there.)
@@MillyKKitty Yea, it kept directing me to an area where you're told not to go and the compass and the people didn't have any direction to give. I finally after hours of trying to figure it out, gave up. Ruined the game for me.
@@stennor4370 OMG, we probably got stuck in this same exact part - because i remember the part, in which as an Iorek, you supposed to fight some boss (I don't remember what it was, some machine or something), and I couldn't pass this level, and basically quitted the game.
This game was very confusing for someone who did not speak English as their first language. It took me like ten years to finally get past the boat level because you had to win minigames around the boat to win (If you lost, you had to reopen the save, since you had limited tries)
Then I accidentally deleted that save file. Absolutely devastated because the later half was not fun at all.
I got this game when I was a kid and thought it was fun at first, when I reached the school area I felt tricked and gave up out of boredom.

My favourite thing about the movie is how upbeat the movie ends with our protagonist saving her friend and them flying to her father. Only problem is that in book right after her Father kills him.
Oddly enough, the real ending exists in cut footage, and is in the game.
Not only that, he kills him by ripping his soul out as part of a human sacrifice.
I just want to see an interview with the developer, like in the meeting where they're talking about game mechanics, who the hell went "you know what kids want in a game? Playing hide and go seek on a roof top."
The scoliosis butler is a very relatable character
The tv show was WAY better than the movie. All the actors was stunning and the visual effects was well made
It's mixed for me , I loved the 2007 one even though it kinda fell flat on why the overall reason of saving the children. They went too fast, I wish Daniel or Nicole make a cameo.
It's weird but I was super annoyed they changed Serafina Pekkala's daemon from a book-accurate snow goose to some bird of prey. Like why?

I knew one girl that refused to watch the movie because in later books "they try to kill God!". It was so many years ago and I have no idea if that's true but I still find that hilarious.
I haven't read the books but I've watched the HBO show which is generally very faithful

As a His Dark Materials fan this game was actually a guilty pleasure. I am well aware of the faults but I would play it over and over again even if I know that Will and the upcoming war against heaven Asriel was planning was never going to get a game. Funnily enough it had scenes that were taken straight from the cut ending. Outside of the books everything else from the franchise was rather mediocre. The HBO adaptation is the only one I would call a faithful adaptation and even then they messed it up at points but at least they didn’t censor key plot points on religious grounds and is actually completing the trilogy. 😂 Love this game, but very flawed I totally admit that.
I feel the same way! I used to play this a lot as a kid. Loved the first book, read it probably half a dozen times.
i distinctly remember the fight between good guy polar bear and boss polar bear that ended with good polar bear ripping boss polar bear's jaw.
Honestly I played this game as a kid and loved it, I preferred it to the actual movie, I remember it being so much fun

I actually really appreciated a lot of things that they did with this game. There was a lot of opportunities for reading the compass, and you could learn many of the symbol meanings... That's more detail than you'd expect from this sort of game, there were clearly some people in the staff who were passionate about the source material. How you could make use of the different daemon forms, and climb on the rooftops and tell people lies just like Lyra would... YES I do enjoy the catch game with the kids :D It was little things like these that really made me immersed with Lyra's character. The game could have been much better if they fixed the controls, camera etc. so the gameplay wouldn't have to be unnecessarily frustrating... But as a kid that didn't bother me either, I simply accepted it as a challenge to my gaming skills. Also, the soundtrack was fire!

Oh dang, I wasn't expecting someone to talk about this game! I grew up with it and while I recognize now that it's certainly awful, I will say it's soundtrack is one of my all-time favorite video game OSTs.

i had the psp version as a kid, but i didn't know that you could save or load games. i also didn't know you could google walkthroughs and solutions for games. so every single day, i would start a fresh save of this game and play up til the exact same point where i would get stuck again, and then wander around that area until my mom would take my psp away for the day. i wasn't the smartest kid. kinda wanna go back home and find my psp and see if i can finally beat it

The only thing I remember from golden compass was that the main character’s little companion is called a “demon”, and that caused many to not watch it.
Wrong. It’s a dæmon, an old world meaning like a guardian spirit and it’s literally a human’s soul.
I remember the first time I heard about this film/book: I was probably in fourth or fifth grade religious education (or Sunday school). Our instructor took a section of class to tell us sternly not to go see it because it portrays demons as best friends and priests as evil child abductors. Ironic given it’s about a fictional religious war and the dæmons not even being the standard ones of the Bible, but instructor still believed it was persecution on Christianity and promoting satanism.
This is why I don’t practice religion anymore…

I got taken to see this movie as a kid by my mum who loves polar bears. The movie was so boring and hard to follow that both of us thought it was awful. Looks like some how the game was even worse.

I loved this game as a kid and finished it too many times to count. You guys should’ve played the psp version, it’s the exact same thing but in a smaller screen so it’s a real game changer.

YO! The books and story is absolutely incredible! The daemons are actually the humans souls in a physical manifestation. I personally loved the show from beginning to end. It was spectacular but it did change things or miss certain parts but overall it was a decent adaptation. This game doesn’t look great and I never watched the film, I just got in to the books when the show was coming out and then finished the other books before season 2 & 3 were released.
(NSFW warning) I remember in one scene of the movie I think where one of the polar bears just fucking claws the other one’s jaw off and kills him, shit was insane
To be fair, the movie got completely screwed up due to it's distributor and producer, New Line Cinema, wanting to make the movie shorter, and as a result, it sort of messed up the pacing with MANY scenes deleted. It actually did way better overseas and they almost greenlit a sequel for that reason...except New Line made it so that only it's domestic box office numbers could regain back it's budget, but it bombed pretty badly in the US.

the clip of Daniel Craig with the 007 theme playing just made me think "what came out around this time, Casino Royale or Quantum of Solace?" for a second, but the 2007 sealed it, not to mention that i lost it when the theme played.

you know this movie was bad because it was miserable enough for our teacher to make us watch it in class. Can't even remember what we were studying it for tbh but either way they NEVER showed good movies in school so this one fit the bill.

I still own a Golden Compass board game that has never been opened. My parents bought it a very long time ago because it was on sale, but none of us actually knew what the hell The Golden Compass actually was, so we just...stored it away and never played it. I didn't know that it was a book (and later a movie) until way later when i read about it on the internet, as neither of them have ever been mentioned in my country 😂

I have this game and still have it after decades of owning it. I remember playing it as a kid and only getting to the boat level, and puzzles were hard for my little 6 year old brain. And I played this game not knowing it was a movie based videogame lol. Until I saw the movie years ago and it was bad. I barely remember that movie

My friend brought this game over to my house during a sleepover and we played it on my big brother's PS3. It disappeared that same night... I think it was stolen and pawned off by my brother, and I've always felt guilty about losing my friend's game at my house. But after this video, I don't feel as bad about it...
