- This morning my wife's subaru wouldn't get out of park. The subaru has also been having issues with the ABS and Traction Control, and Hillside Assistance lights staying on.
Turned out that there is a small switch attached to the brake lever and it needed to be adjusted.

How did you take it out? Just pulled? Wish there were more details in how you pulled it out and actually adjusted it and fixed it
you twist it just a little bit then it should come out of the slots.
adjusting the position, sometimes fixes the issue. i adjusted mine to stick out a little bit more and turn on sooner... however, most likely the switch needs to be replaced. it's fairly cheap to replace it.
@@lostman65 awesome thanks for the swift reply! Working on it today. For kow the screw driver in the gear shifter is working as a temp solution.
I also just found out there is a recall for this issue right now on the 2014 subaru
This saved me! Best video ever. I was stranded and perplexed with this exact problem. This remedy fixed it. Thank you for your video!
Had this EXACT issue on my 2015 Forester... THANKS! Saved me a trip to the repair shop. I love RUclips!
I don't know how the hell you figured this out, but this worked like a charm. Saved me from having to rent a car for an upcoming vacation.
You just got me out of the parking lot at the grocery store. Good man!
UPDATE: Have had zero issues since this fix.
Hey just wanted to say thank you for this video. It just saved me from calling a tow truck about 50 miles from home.
You helped me fix the issue of the car myself! Thank you so much!!!! Now I understand my car much better
Just had the same problem. There is another fix too. There is a small round cap just above the 'P' indicator at the base of the gear selector. Carefully take that cap off with a flat screwdriver. Then, while depressing the brake pedal, insert the screw driver in the hole to press the 'lock release' button in the hole. It should then release the selector from the park position. See how ya go.
That is great, but it does not solve the problem. It just overrides the problem.
Watching this video because my 2015 Forester has this same problem, thanks for posting. I have to be honest, this damn Subaru has been nothing but problem after problem. I have to get alignments every few months because its eating up tires. The engine eats oil. The whole "runs like shit until it warms up" is annoying. The ignition had to be replaced, alternator went after 10k miles, Sunroof leaked and it has been garage kept since it was bought. I had high hopes because it is a Subaru but its looking like it will be the first and last Subaru ill buy.
chefdan87 . It ‘s weird. I have three drive it too over 100 000 miles on it with no problems . What wrong with your?
Thank you so much! Wife called me with this same problem. I'm going to go fix it now int he Home Depot parking lot.
jason vanhoose i hope it worked out! also there was a recall on the switch.

2016 Subaru Impreza same problem, my hubby's gonna fix it🙂❤thanks for this video!
I was just able to fix this issue doing exactly this. Thank you so much for this video!
Kelly Ahlquist so glad you found it helpful.
Awesome! Save my daughter from being stuck and calling a truck. Thank you.
that’s great. after i made this video, subaru recalled the switch on certain models
Thank you so much, you saved my butt.
Thanks for a very helpful video.
Thank you so much for this! You just saved this Forester owner a trip to the mechanic! Took me a little time to get the right position that was touching the brake without engaging it, but it's great now. Did you end up having to replace the switch or did reseating work for good?
Just did it! Perfect!! Thanks!
Thank you for this video! My daughter was stranded in her 2015 CrossTrek. Fixed it within 10 minutes in Kroger parking lot. Did you have replace it eventually?
Philip McCain yes i replaced it ... then there was recall. look into the recall
Good video . Thank you
Thanks! Had same problem on my 2014 Forester. I found that I didn't need to take out the switch, just push in the brake and then push the switch button a couple times.
I replaced mine and it’s still not working. May have to take apart like you did and reinstall it to see if it works on the 2nd attempt. Any tips?
BambooScar the only thing i can think of, if it is the switch, is to make sure you have it adjusted correctly.
@bambooscar Do you have a part #? And is there an actual name for this piece? I cant seem to find the name of the part mentioned anywhere.

Wyatt LeBeau it’s called a break light switch the part is actually by Nissan and Subaru had a recall on this part for it being defective on many Subaru vehicles
Nice video... but... can you pls upload it again **But remove the music**, so we can hear your voice?
I watched this over and over, but I can't see where the part is. I can see it when it's unplugged, but I can't tell which thing near the brakes to unplug.
hi kate, it's right there parallel to the brake arm, on one of the stationary metal pieces.
if i were you i would probably call the subaru dealer and see if you're eligible for the recall they had on that part.
bruh pretty sure this was a recall man take it in
HaZaRd Da KinG yep! it was recalled some time after this video was made.
