Well my switch was already one of the "BLUE improved ones" and went out at 20000 miles THANKS this video helped me fix it myself!!!!! the shame is that Subaru wanted me to wait until the lights came on again and drive it up for diagnostics well hello I would have had to drive without brake lights to do that!!!!
well since replacing the BLS, my cruise wont set. tried adjusting the BLS, still wont set. Could it have anything to do with the fact that I used non OEM part??
Thank you for the video. Only cost $19 for the part and saved the service department charges. Getting the right adjustment took a couple of tries as if you insert the BLS too far in, the brake lights will remain on. You are right, you need someone to watch the brake lights as you are installing the replacement part. Keep on posting.
This is an excellent video. I'm been having this problem intermittently for 6 months now and it started again this morning. Dealer charged me $24 for the switch and wanted $138 diagnostic fee that is not applied to the work (seems unethical to me) plus parts and labor. Had you not shown how to twist it to get it out I wouldn't have figured it out. Details are so welcomed in a video like this. Thank you, you are a good man!
It is a safety risk and a major inconvenience if you don't know how to override the gear if needed. My dealership wanted $180 for installation because they said they need to celebrate it with a computer. I actually ended up just buying a new part but not using it yet. I just readjusted the old one and it is working perfectly.
2014 XV Crosstrek with ~87K miles on it and supposedly this error just came on. I ran the ODB yesterday for a different issue regarding my automatic transmission control valve which is needed to be replaced under the extended 10 year, 100K mile warranty but didn't see a code for this error. Just got a call back from my dealerrship and they said they also saw code C1531 for the brake light switch failure. I can't believe my dealership wanted to charge me $180 for this maintenance. Luckily I knew enough to research the issue before agreeing to the repair. Thanks for the informative video! [After some negotiation they decided to replace the switch for no charge. Seems like this should be covered under a safety recall, but apparently Subaru doesn't deem brake light failure as a safety risk...]
Bad Judgement my 2016 crosstrek did this today. Going to the dealership to get the switch replaced tomorrow. I’m considering keeping a spare in the glove compartment.
OMG thank you sooo much, after watching you very very accurate and infomative video I have successfully repaired my daughters 2015 Fubaru Forester. Actually she did all the wotk I drove her to the parts store ;>). You saved her a very hard to come by $200.00 they wanted to charge her at the dealership. Even the help in getting the car in gear kept her from being stuck in some sketchy location at night. Kudos and keep them coming. Thanks again from my daughter and myself.
Same for the 2015 super easy fix just remember when you place th new sensor back in that it is flat side towards the ground and the side with the hump is facing the engine if that makes sense, or just pay attention before removing it. Literally takes like 2 min.
These are readily available directly from Amazon. Our 2013 Impreza had this problem. Insane, one $15 part consisting of a spring and a circuit can make or break the ABS, hill assist, traction control, cruise control, brake lights, and the ability to put the engine in gear.
In a pinch until you get the new one, you can open up the switch and use electrical contact cleaner to remove the black gunk on the contacts.. almost good as new. If you have it, can you provide the part number for the switch replaced on the recall? The "new revision" one also failed on me after 2 years.
That part has now been recalled and I just had it replaced. NOW it's acting faulty and the car won't start or come out of park... Are they replacing old ones with other old faulty ones? I'm not confident that I can do this myself.
Subaru finally seems to be addressing this. I just got a recall alert from Amazon after buying and installing this a few weeks ago. But I can't tell if they are issuing a recall for the original part or the new part?
@Kies Motorsports This video is very helpful, I've already had to replace the part twice and the dealership claims its our fault it failed, so I'm tired of paying them $150 every time it fails. However, the amazon link in your description doesn't work. Do you have an updated parts link?
June 2019 - Subaru put a recall out for this .. maybe anyone with this issue can get their money back?? Mine just lit up like a christmas tree, a couple days after getting the letter. Thanks for the video!
Subaru, a lot of people forget, but is a very small car manufacturer, compared to the rest. Even their head offices are located in tiny buildings. Surprising.
Wondering you didn't say ,should the new switch be installed so that the button should or might be all the way compressed when installed,I can't count the grooves so many of them ,thanks
So I guess I put mine in too far and when I tested it, the lights stayed on. Even with it removed the lights are on now. I disconnected the battery hoping to reset and the brake lights come back on when I reconnect it. Any idea how to fix this so the tail lights aren't on all of the time?
I have a 2011 wrx and i have same issue.only prob is my switch is good ive dble checked i have power to lights when i jump power to the fuse but i dont have any power going to the fuse block under steering wheel fuse is good and tailights work but no brake lights.been like this for a year and a half....fml...
Hi. I started having this problem over a year ago on my Subary XV , Subaru already changed it twice and still having same problem Ansd they are using the brand new re-designed switch
Make sure get aftermarket part and make sure it's made in the US. The Japanese parts didn't use dielectric grease to cover two contacts inside of the sensor and caused all the issues.
well since replacing the BLS, my cruise wont set. tried adjusting the BLS, still wont set. Could it have anything to do with the fact that I used non subaru/nissan part??
I feel ya bud.i have a 2011 wrx hatch and i have abs hill assist and traction lights on.i have working tailights but no brake lights..i jumped power to the brake switch connectors and brake lights come on...i test my new brake light switch that works but for some reason my 20 amp fuse slot for the stop switch aka tail lights gets no power from the front of the car...been like this for a year and a half....fml....did u ever get yours fixed??

You are awesome! Thanks for sharing this video because it saved me a bunch of money. One $16 part and I'm back in business! You rock!!!
Awesome! Glad it helped!

Thanks! It's amazing, the part is so stinking cheap! Subaru needs to fix this.. huge safety risk

Your video saved the day! I was having the same problem with my 2015 Impreza Hatch and this took care of it.
Glad it helped!
Thank you for your help. Your video was very clear; your instructions were clear and your visuals were clear.

my 2014 forester has the same problem, going to give it a try. thanks a lot for sharing the video
Thanks for the guide... our 2016 Forrester was having the same problems. Followed the video and it appears to be fixed, for now, at least.
Got my Recall letter from Subaru today. Scheduled service this week. Free!
Cheers for the Vid, just changed out mine took like 5 minutes.
Wow dude thanks a lot my WRX has this problem nice simple vid

You're a legend. You just saved me $100 and a bunch of confusion
Nice job, had the same issue on my 2015 Forester
Thanks - Awesome video, I had the same thing happen and you saved me a trip to Subaru!!!
Great!
That part has now been recalled and I just had it replaced. NOW it's acting faulty and the car won't start or come out of park... Are they replacing old ones with other old faulty ones? I'm not confident that I can do this myself.
I have the same lights on plus the check engine light. Shifts and drives fine and my brake lights work. Cruise control doesn't work.
Subaru finally seems to be addressing this. I just got a recall alert from Amazon after buying and installing this a few weeks ago. But I can't tell if they are issuing a recall for the original part or the new part?
2 years later and this part is finally on a recall
YES, THANKS for let us know. I called to the dealer today. Will be replaced
@Kies Motorsports

thanks a bunch. it worked like a charm.

Subaru and Nissan share parts for a long time. Window switch, transmissions.

Its not working out for me and my bulbs all went out on my 2014 Legacy
This didn’t help?
Why do these things fail?
This just failed on my 2014 STI. This is a safety issue, and needs to be a recall.

Car manufacturers do that all the times share parts
