  • We're talking some more about LayOut in this video! For this one, we are focusing only on dimensions since there is so much to learn.

Aaron, good start, thank you. I would like to see more demos on: 1- what can happen to dimensions when the SU model is modified, 2- what can happen and how to correct dimensions when the model in Layout gets modified, such as rotated or clipviews are applied, 3- what are other causes when dimensions don't automatically update correctly (eg., they are no longer "sticking" to snap points of the drawing) AND how to repair those dimensions.

You can also add additional text around the in the dimension. For example, add "R" or "RAD" or "D" or "DIA" for Radius or Diameter. Or "Nominal". Or "Adjust to Fit". Or...

Thanks so much for this and all SU & LO tutuorials. I know you have the power to demand the enginers do as you tell them so here is one. Make dual dimensions possible with a checkbox. Any two at once, for example, Imperial & metric. I know you can get this done😎

Hi Aaron, I'm an architect learning LO as a substitute for Autocad. I'm looking forward to more detailed content on the subtleties required for exacting control of document production. For example: how to dimension that tapered AND angled upright. There are two or three very close geometries to the shape of that piece, and you glaze over how to control (or even understand) which geometry LO is snapping to.

I will have an easier time placing angular dimensions, thanks to your demo! I would add my vote for another LayOut video on how to dimension arcs and circles ... and maybe an explanation for why these aren't specific, native tools available in SketchUp LayOut. (I suspect it's related to how arcs and circles are defined with segments in SketchUp.) As many others have pointed out, it's a major source of frustration when creating non-architectural models / drawings, like furniture or other mechanical designs.

In case anyone is having trouble with the dimensions not showing: I made the mistake of adding the dimension layer below the Default layer. See video 0:55. This caused the dimensions to be drawn under the default layer which caused the dimensions to not be seen. After a lot of hours and research and frustration, with the side affect of eating too much, I found the answer. When you add the Dimension layer, make sure that the text (in the Layer box ) is actually above the Default text. I didn't know that the order of the text from top to bottom actually mattered. Not only do you need to have a separate layer for dimensions and notes, and it needs to be unique to one page, and the pencil has to be on the layer to make it active, you also have to have the text itself above the Default text. Hope this helps.

I have a scenario where you would want to turn Autoscale off. Often I create a clipping mask on an elevation from floor to ceiling to cut off unwanted Geometry. If I then try to draw in that dimension line from floor to ceiling it snaps to the clipping mask and returns the wrong dimension. Turn off autoscale and set the scale to match your sketchup model and you will get the correct dimension.

I remain slightly confused as to where it is best to have your dimensions sketchup, layout or both?
I appreciate that dimensions in sketchup do not print legibly so you might need to annotate your model with dimensions in layout so that you could for example printout a project plan with cut lists that are readable.
But you might also need dimensions in sketchup as part of the drawing/modelling process.
If this is the case is best practice to have sketchup dimensions on one tag/layer and layout dimensions on another tag/layer?
I am enjoying this series of videos they are very helpful.

Thanks for another great video! I use milimetric dimensions in my designs and often need to change the dimensions from the autotext dim. and enter it manually, even when measuring the same components (e.g. groups of a solar panel component). The skp models I work on have lots of layers so I'm thinking maybe its overlapping edges or line weights...
It'll be great to hear if anyone else is experiencing this
    Cheers!

Are you dimensioning with the Sketchup model in Raster or Vector. I find that if I am in Raster the snapping is very finicky so I changed to Vector so that I can see the points I want to dimension too more clearly. Usually need to set it to a 0.1pt line scale as I have snap points as close as 2mm together most of the time.

Hey guys, I will like to know why my layout upper cabinet dimensions aligned above the ceiling... once i change the upper cabinet height, or 1 of them in sketchup, updating model reference in layout, makes all my aligned dimensions mess up, and i have to realign then 1 by 1. There is a solution to keep them align even after i change something on the model?
Like we had in 2019 layout, back there we could change the model, and layout use to keep the dimensions aligned and connected.
    Thanks guys

If you open a new document and change the Dimensions properties, then save that doc as a new template, that template will automatically have those dimension settings.

I am finding Sketchup frustrating as a 75 year old traditionally trained engineer/designer, I find it easier and quicker to use my Drafting board and a pencil. The only benefit I can see is the ability to print off designs . Sketchup is definitely a time thief, and I find what should be simple tasks unnecessarily finicky. As I only want to use something like Sketchup for the occasional design ideas, I think it is too expensive. So, it's back to the drawing board.

Alas, the more time we spend learning something, the easier it will be to use! If you are still interested in learning SketchUp we would recommend you start by heading over to SketchUp Campus (learn.sketchup.com) and taking the Findamentals course. It is a great way to start learning SketchUp!
