    Hi Sam, Thanks for your latest video and all the ones before that. We are Aussie but our son lives in HK. Whilst we visit as often as possible, it's not the same as being there full time, so your videos provide a link to the HK life that we love. Thank you, Sam for your latest video! The last time I visited Hong Kong was in 2016. I love that you try all different places, including those that are budget friendly and catered to Hong Kong locals instead of tourists. I still remember the delicious fish dumplings I had the last time I was there. There are soooo many wonton, fish ball and noodle places in Hong Kong but I have never tried this one during my visits. I must give this place a try the next time I visit Hong Kong. Please keep your recommendations coming.

    Chiu Chow cuisine is known for all kinds of meatballs including pork, beef, squid, cuttlefish and fish. Fish skin dumpling is also a Chiu Chow specialty, the wrapper is made from fish and the filling is pork. Unfortunately, fish skin dumpling is a dying art as it is labor intensive. If a restaurant has it on the menu, it's a real treat. The first time I tried it was in Kowloon City and I loved it, eaten with a side of vegetables and fried fish skin. I also like to add chili oil and red vinegar to my bowl of noodles. Kowloon City has several restaurants specializing in Chiu Chow cuisine. Another favorite place of mine was in Kennedy Town. My usual was a bowl of ho fun noodles with fish skin dumplings and cuttlefish balls. It was my comfort food and so delicious 😋

      Wow, thanks for all that information, especially the fish skin dumplings, that is really good to know that they’re a special treat- they struck me as pretty labour intensive! Adding oil and vinegar is a great way to go for sure- great suggestion. Would you happen to know thee names of the places - perhaps in Kowloon City and Kennedy Town? Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment, and hope you enjoyed the video!

      @@HongKongHoods Hi Sam, I thoroughly enjoyed yr video, love when you find hidden gems and eat like a local. I'm sorry I don't recall the names of the places in Kowloon City nor Kennedy Town. It was a long time ago. They were old school, non-descript HK noodle shops which I frequented when I lived in San Po Kong and Kennedy Town. I recall you did a vdo in Kowloon City on the "fish ball king of HK" who is Chiu Chow. Perhaps if you ask him, he would know where to find fish skin dumpling noodle soup in Kowloon City which has a sizeable Chiu Chow community. Many retail markets, eateries and specialty stores sell things specific to Chiu Chow taste like braised duck, chives and taro rice cakes, fish balls, beef and pork meatballs, sweet snacks/pastries/cookies, etc.
      In Cantonese, fish skin dumplings are called "yu pi gao" or just "yu gao". The fish skin dumplings you had in Causeway Bay were salty. They should not be salty, but a mild taste like a wonton and the fish skin wrapper has a nice al dente bite.

    Interesting that the first noodle bowl had fish and meat in it. Did the brisket overpower the fish flavor at all? The egg noodles in the second bowl look great. I could probably eat a whole bag of the fish skins - looks reminiscent of pork rinds.

      Hey Nate, thanks for watching! Yeah, slowly being bumped up by the algorithm... let's hope it continues! The brisket and the fishballs actually went well together- which I know sounds weird. I think because the fishballs don't soak up flavour, it just makes for a bit of meaty broth on the outside, which tastes really good! The fish skins are so good mate- definitely recommend them with beer if you can get hold of them where you are. Hope all's well with you and the family!

    Hi, I just discovered your channel a few days ago. I hope you do more vids in the New Territories (Tai Po in particular) Although I am born and bred in the UK, my parents are from Tai Po (my parents rarely venture beyond Tai Po). Excellent presentation Sam. It really is an interesting meal identifying the significant dishes in Hong-Kong. I am sure we may find and buy these fish balls, meat balls, fish skin etc in Australia , Europe or North America, but they would be the frozen ones. Only in Hong-Kong that you can taste these REAL and fresh stuff ! Thank you Sam and sorry that you must require a bit of exercises after witnessing your consumption of all the dishes on that table !😂

      Thank you Johnson as always for watching and commenting! Yes, I bet it's so hard (or impossible) to find fresh fish balls like this in Aus, Europe or N. America - that's why we feel so lucky to live in Hong Kong, so we can enjoy delicacies like this! Yes - jogging is absolutely required after these meals... otherwise the show would be called "Fat Sam Eats It".

    Hi Sam. Question for you - after four years in HK, are you conversational in Cantonese and Mandarin? I can’t believe you’re not because while many people speak English there another commenter wrote that you had said in a previous video that you only speak certain phrases. I figured I’d ask you directly lol. I have lived and worked abroad and nothing is more important than the first 6-12 months in learning the language!
    Love your videos btw. Love traditional HK cuisine

    I wonder if there's much difference in the fish balls and fish dumplings in Hong Kong and Singapore. Here in Singapore, practically all eateries will have a fish ball noodle stall. However over here the dried noodles is more popular. It is with the fish balls and soup served separately. We like to add lots of local sambal chili sauce with the dried noodles and condiment of bird's eye chili and soy sauce.
    That's essentially how most chinese dishes are. Vegetables are vegetables, main are main.

      Thanks for explaining fish balls in Singapore! I've never eaten fish balls in Singapore so I cannot compare them, but I will make a note of that for next time as it would be interesting to understand how they differ.

  • @kurlexchoi
    @kurlexchoi Год назад

    They are amazing fish ball and knowing they've been existed for a long time. The Hor-Fun broth is more of beef flavor since it has beef brisket with fish ball. The egg noodle broth would be more of fish flavor since it only consisted of fish dumpling. I would snack on those crispy crunchy fish skin first before eating the bowls of noodles. I don't think there is any sourness in watercress honey unless they added some lemon or lime flavor into the drink. Oyster sauce can be very salty too with those green veggies. I ate those every week and I cooked them in boiling water just like they did, but I minced some gingers & garlics and sauteed in the pan with olive oil/sesame oil then glazed on top of those veggies with oyster sauce.

    very good recommendation Sam.... back when i was in HK, often i walked passed it but never went inside... also how Chinese eat is different to western... we eat dumplings/fishballs by themselves, not mixed with noodles as that'd dilute the overall flavour... as the fishball/dumplings are the attraction but the noodles are the main cast.. also breaking a bunch of noodles is considered bad luck in cutting your life short.... normally just use chopsticks to pick up a small bunch just enough to half fill your mouth and biting a last few strands off is ok... that's why i always cringed when i saw Mark Weins biting a full mouthful of noodles....

    • @HongKongHoods
      @HongKongHoods  Год назад +1

      Thanks for watching and sharing that information! Agreed that the noodles are the bedrock of the dish- kind of like rice is with sushi (although people would think it's actually the fish!). I'm doing this content creation thing seriously now! by the way according to friends I have in the south-east Asia region there was a typhoon? the Philippines was affected but somehow Hong Kong and Taiwan where the spared the worst of it?. You support Man United don't you? I just remembered that, typical British summer over here, over cast and raining whereas back in the Southern U.S it's absolutely scorching right now. Anyway I always enjoy your stuff!

      @@HongKongHoods Hey, no problem! Yeah last season for Liverpool was freaking awful as far as I'm concerned really, Mane leaving, swamped with injuries, burn out you name it. Now the likes of Firmino and Henderson have moved on I can't help but feel a little unsettled ahead of the start of the new season come next month, I know it's only pre season but their defense is already looking very suspect indeed. As for Man United you officially managed to kick start your season last year by narrowly beating us then as the months progressed things slightly went down hill a bit for you, a lot of your fanbase has turned on Harry McQuire. Both of us where resoundingly beaten by Man City at the Etihad but managed to get revenge in the return fixtures though. I cover mostly American history subjects such as the civil war and now the revolutionary war. So I heard! you take care of yourself and stay out of harms way now! My highlights of last season where destroying you guys and shutting up Richarlison in added time.
