Woman Arrested After Shoplifting Attempt at Hoboken ShopRite

- Around 5:38 PM on August 14, 2023, Officers Rose Kanan and Jennifer Lee with the Hoboken Police Department responded to a report of a shoplifting at ShopRite on 900 Madison Street. They entered the store around and walked upstairs to the loss prevention office. In the loss prevention office, they met with the loss prevention officer as well as the alleged shoplifter, who was identified as 42-year-old Evelyn.
The loss prevention officer informed Officer Kanan that he saw the woman enter the store around 4:30 PM and later attempt to leave the store without paying for $287.78 worth of items. He reviewed the surveillance footage with the officer and provided her with an itemized receipt of the value of the items she had allegedly attempted to steal. Officer Kanan subsequently placed Evelyn under arrest for shoplifting. She was handcuffed and escorted to the patrol car.
Evelyn was transported to the Hoboken Police Department for further processing. At police HQ, she was searched in more detail by Officer Kanan. Officer Lee finger printed and photographed her. Lieutenant Butler conducted a NCIC search and Evelyn was found to have no outstanding warrants. She was subsequently charged with shoplifting under 2C:20-11B(1) and released pending her court appearance.
Court records indicate that on October 24, 2023, Evelyn entered no plea in court, and the original charge under 2C:20-11B(1) was amended to Disturbing the Peace (145-1). Evelyn also paid a total of $533 in fines.

Super. 13, the Appellate Division of the Superior Court has also affirmed the right to film law enforcement interactions.

They resell stuff at flea markets. There's a flea market by Rahway Prison filled with stuff that is definitely shoplifted.
The local church in my town has awesome fruits and veggies. I got a head of cabbage so big that it lasted me a month. They seem to have everything but meat and cheese. They take whatever is left to the next church down the road so people don't have to drive too far. Then they also have meals on wheels.
Hell if someone came to me and said they needed money for food I would take them in the store and buy them what they need. I wouldn’t just give them money but I would food.
Times aren't hard, things are relatively good in this country. People make their own lives hard.

She didn't say much, but what she did say I found disturbing. She didn't get having to be arrested because she didn't hurt herself or someone else. The cop then reminded her it's a crime. What in the world did her parents teach her? I learned how wrong stealing was at age 6 in 1967. Space stuff was too cool at this time and my Dad was in the Air Force and worked a couple years with NASA already and the Air Force sent my Dad to Texas A&M to earn masters degree in Aeronautical and Nuclear Engineering. A boy in my neighborhood had a toy astronaut helmet and all children at this time would have been excited to have one, but based on my Dad's career it really meant alot to me. My brother and I walked by his house one day and his garage was open and there sat the helmet. My brother and I stole that Hemet, but I assure you we didn't have it long. My Dad discovered the helmet, got to the bottom of it, spanked us, grounded us, gave us a talk on why it is wrong to steal, and made us take the helmet back and apologize to the boy and his Mom. I never stole again. Please tell me parents still teach their kids it's wrong to steal. At least she wasn't stealing with kids like I have seen on some videos.

Yep. That's why they can't stay open in bad areas... So many people steal that only the worst get caught, there is no profit and the store closes.
@@volvo09 Correct. Supermarkets rely on volume for profit, contracts with food vendors and product placement in the store (Like Pepsi will pay to have their product in the front of the store, etc.). A lot of people do not realize how expensive it is to keep a supermarket open and functioning. Just the electricity bill alone is a major expense.
That's a lie! I know that make money in volume, but $2 in today's inflated prices - is not true. That is the same as car dealerships always lying claiming that they don't make much money. Do you think that they would be in business if they were just getting by? Sales rotate and Shoprite costs more than Stop and Shop at regular prices, and both are more than Walmart, and I know that NJ has Super Walmart grocery stores nearby.
@@HardCold-Alquan I worked on the corporate side of the grocery business and it is a well published fact. You did state "inflated prices" which includes the inflated cost just to keep a supermarket open. Do you know the average in sales per day for your average supermarket? Do you know how much all of the overhead is to keep a supermarket open? Do you know how much it costs just to insure a supermarket or how much regulations they have to stay open? Also, a Shoprite or Stop and Shop carry more products than a Walmart, so everyone doesn't grocery shop there. I would never grocery shop at a Walmart and there is a reason why there are so many Shoprites in New Jersey.

No consequence is the mentality till they get caught and reality hits them like a ton of bricks! Crazy way of going about your life. I never do wrong because I’m always aware of the consequences. I’m not a perfect human but taking what’s not yours is something I will never do! And I get if you homeless, starving etc but stealing is in my top 3 never in my life not to do list
There are many programs for homeless and poor. Still wrong to steal. And a lot of times when they do, it's alcohol and smokes. No excuse for stealing

If your logic was true, nurses would be millionaires for delivering babies and saving lives before the doctors even get in the room which happens more than you think. How about firefighters or garbage men, should they get a raise for getting a cat out of a tree or throwing out that extra garbage bag? What about teachers, the teachers students overall grades are up this semester, let’s pay the teacher more for doing their job. So ridiculous.
