Another Shoplifting Duo Gets Arrested at the Hoboken ShopRite

- Around 5:15 PM on March 19, 2024, Officers Chelsea Tamborra and Rose Kanan with the Hoboken Police Department responded to a report of a shoplifting involving 2 females that had occurred at ShopRite at 900 Madison Street. They made contact with the alleged shoplifters, who were being detained in the loss prevention office. The alleged shoplifters were identified as 20-year-old Bhavya and 21-year-old Yamini.
The loss prevention officer showed the officer surveillance footage of the 2 alleged suspects attempting to leave without paying for 27 items totaling $155.61 after only paying for 2 items totaling $8.74. The loss prevention officer noticed these two individuals were apparently repeat offenders because they were flagged by their facial recognition system, but they had allegedly run away before they could be apprehended that time.
Officers Tamborra and Kanan placed Bhavya and Yamini under arrest. They were transported in the same vehicle to the Hoboken Police Department for further processing. At the police station, they were processed and each of them were charged with 1 count of shoplifting merchandise under 2C:20-11B(1). After they were processed at the Hoboken Police Department and handed their summonses, they were released with a summons to appear in court.

Here in Australia we have really strict laws about bringing food into the country without declaring it first as it can be dangerous for our environment. Indian women are some of the worst offenders when it comes to smuggling in food without declaring it and then pretending they had no clue, despite the fact that it will be plainly obvious they were trying to game the system.
I'm not sure if it's a strategy that works for them back in India but it rarely works when they try to come through Australian airports.

It's very saddening to see how a golden opportunity to study and make a great fortune has gone down the drain for these 2 girls....Looks like they haven't understood the serious repercussions of their action. Their unapologetic attitude, zero regret, exhibition of arrogance by offering to pay double and saying henceforth they would abstain from entering the store etc. demonstrates the wrong/ cheap tricks tried back home in India.

The reason there were so many incidents of shoplifting is because they think that this departmental store is an easy target . Now that they are caught they now know you cannot mess around with this store, because once the Police bust you , your life is over.
My mother taught me never to steal a pin that doesn't belong to me. If you go to someone's house, always sit where everyone can see you, don't go into anyone's room without anyone along with you.

Since they don't have SSN and are student, their DSO(every college/university that takes international student has a DSO) will be notified. He will go through the case details and create a record in the student database. They will be probably expelled from the university. The next step for them would be to submit a consideration plea to the president/dean of the university and from there on it will be upto the university panel if they want to give these students a second chance to continue their studies or else they would have to leave the US as their student visa will get void after 2 weeks from the date it was reported to their DSO.

The first time offenders when suitably counselled are very less likely to commit the crime again. Some individuals carry the trauma throughout their life.

They will mostly get away by paying fine to the shop and police if they are called in. If it goes to court very unlikely jail. As they are students, they have a future. Sometimes its supermarkets which place items for sale up to the doorway..past the payment area....and people may instinctively push their trolleys PAST the payment line and be accused as taking things out without payment..So best to leave tge trolley near the payment counter..walk to the items you want and carry those back to the trolley..Since the items in the trolley is not paid for ..it can stay unattended INSIDE..the before-payment area..even if some one else takes the items from the trolley its alright...as you have not paid for it..thebitems are just in a trolley within the payment area..and at most you loose the item from your trolley..or groery list...so dont get into a situation like this..

It’s good as long as it works fine. Sometimes barcode entries get mismatched especially when you want to take out items after scanning them, then you need to call an attendant and get it done. Attendants could make a mistake and take out the wrong item, and you get blamed for shop lifting
