shit, i pop rear inner tube last week, go trough hell while changing it, and yesterday i poped front inner tube and I'm to terryfied to even attempt to change it...
@@drugard2820 you should try tubeless tires. Cheap and easy. All you have to do is boil them and they aren’t too bad to get on. I’ve replaced both rear tires on mine. About to do the front tire. Will update on how that goes haha

You can change the tire without removing the motor lol I've done it 5 times now. However, seeing the exposed motor is definitely cool :) The clamping technique is a big help. I discovered this when putting a new tire on as it kept slipping off the rim at a different place (because it was new and slick), this will save you at least 30 minutes. BTW, inflate to 40-50psi or you WILL get pinch flats (that's why I had to do this so many times).
They need to start makin these tyres alot easier to fix punctures without having to watch videos hopefully they will make it as easy as fixing a peddle bike puncture great video any way
At last, someone who knows what he is doing when changing a tyre! Only thing I would do different is to inflate the tyre before refitting the wheel, just in case there is a problem holding air. So many people get this wrong, so it good to have a proper video to point other scooter riders to when they have a tyre to change and are finding it 'impossible'.
@@RidePureElectric Not in any particular order... How about disc brake pads replacement and proper brake adjustment including correct pad clearance. Proper adjustment of stem latch. Lubrication of moving parts such as brake cable, stem latch, kick stand, etc. Finding proper tyre pressure and checking it regularly. Applying FW updates where applicable. Safety checks users should carry out before each ride. How to clean your scooter properly as most are not waterproof, so don't want to use a hose or too much water on it. How to deal with bolts/screws with damaged/badly made heads that make removal difficult (I had to replace the new bolts on my rear wheel on M365 as they were poorly made of soft aluminium and the hex rounded out on first try). For most simple scooters that pretty much covers it as you already covered the most popular topic of tyre change in this video and it was one that frustrated me until I figured it out for myself.
Superb and in depth video! Helped me a lot dealing with the fron tire replacement. Took me about an hour to replace it with a run-flat one, and assemble it back.
Great Video. The tip on using vice-grips to give the tire more room at the opposite end for the tire levers was brilliant and probably saved me hours of frustration. I didn't need to remove the motor to get the tube out, although the valve was definitely more awkward, but not impossible.
Thank you ! After 2 inner tube punctured because of the valve, i tried your method successfully. I didnt thought of removing the motor but that changed everything! I know i'll be quicker next time now. And i had some one handed bar clamp (wolfcraft, the one you use when you do woodwork) so i tried with those and it worked !
Yeah I have same problem with valve. It goes bent and when you need to out air in, it's impossible the. Gets a puncture because valve being moved to much. I think I will by airless even though it's heavier and will get less miles.
Made the whole process so clear. But also made me realize that unlike bikes, these guys arent really made to be replaced outside the workshop. You can only bring so much with you. So better grab a ride home and repair it there. Thinking of changing the front to honeycomb airless tires.
Dude im putting airless tyres on right now. I couldnt take the motor apart because the bolts are broken like they have no more grip so im trying to put on the airless tyre and i've been fighting for my live for like 45 min or something so

Changing the tire on my hover one journey, was the most difficult tire change I've ever done in my entire 37 years of life. It was ridiculous, hilarious, and super frustrating all the same time. There's a pro tip when changing the back tire, put the disc brake on the side away from you. I cut the shit out of my hands on that thing. 🤣🤣🤣

This is a way better method for doing this. Most people just do the zip ties but the pliers seem to be a much better option than just zip ties alone. Cheers!
About 2.5 years ago I was a mechanic for Bird for about 5 months. The front is definitely harder than the rear and I always need my wives extra set of hands to help out with the tire spoons. I never took apart the motor to change the front? I do like your idea with the needle nose vise grips. That's the key which is squeezing it together gives you more slack on the inside of the tire.
I’ve always wondered who maintained rental e scooters lime, bird, etc etc. but I’m curious I see you mention your wife helping you at times but where would you fix them at? Like your house? Warehouse?
All the companies maintain there own scooters from what I know. However when Bird started you could either be a charger or a mechanic. Just like chargers we were all independent contractors via the app. Bird wasn't very organized at all. If we could fix a scooter we'd get $15 otherwise we'd drop every other ones off at their warehouse and only got $5 each. We all were let go by Bird in Feb of 2019 and then they decided to do all of their maintenance from within. I became a charger then but that came to an end in Oct of 2019. I still own a M365 which was their original launch model and still is my favorite. The newer models were extremely hard to fix. I still have a ton of parts that I got from Bird which is great for my own scooter. Almost forgot. After capturing the Bird scooters via the app I'd take them home and worked on them in my own garage. After that I'd have to find a nest (like the chargers) and release them to get my $15.

Glad I could help. I've thought about upgrading to the newer models but I have so many parts it just doesn't make a lot of sense. I do like the model with the larger capacity battery and the deck is also bigger along with the newer display. Looking back it was so much work for mostly at minimum wage levels however at the end of the day but it was fun going out on the hunt.

I haven't been able to plug it in for days as I have only 1 pipe wrench. The problem was solved when I realized that I missed a very critical information. I had to tighten the piece of tire I tightened with the pipe wrench very well and push it towards the innermost part of the tire. It was also very good to lubricate the tire with vaseline.
Excellent video was a huge help changing the front tyre and tube, it only took me 3 hours lol 😅

Thanks for the tutorial. If this is your first time changing tire, trust me, it will be hard :) I followed the steps and it went just right. But I have changed tires and tubes many times on other vehicles so I knew what to expect. Take your time. Use the pliers! And it will be okay. Use some soap to make the de/installation easier. Also, don't forget to apply some sealant between the motor and the rim itself. A little bit of silicone is okay. Clean the old adhesive/sealant.
This is a fantastic and easy to follow guide. There are so many little tips that make the job easier. I would not have figured this out on my own. Thank you.
great video, I put my tire in the oven at 60 degrees celcius before putting it back on to make it smooth and flexible. Like that it is so much easier to mount it. I also never removed the motor as it was no needed for me. I use wood clamps for gluing to hold the tire tight. Smart to put the valve first , that was always a struggle for me and I even used a drill to make the hole a bit bigger.
Nasty little job, I've changed low profile car tyres in less time and man did I sweat doing this, haha. I really should have watched a few of these and got the tips before hand, I struggled with no grips had to use brute force and got the tyre nice and warm first.

The trick using the grips to is a life saver. I tried for many hours without success to get the tyre back on. This is the only way I've found to be able to do it. Really great video. Out of interest why do you remove the motor? I've found it just as easy to not bother
Hi James, thanks for the comment. We asked David and here's what he said about your question. 'We found that unless being extremely careful it is easy to damage the motor cable by pulling or dropping the motor, so we thought it would be safer to give people the full knowledge. But yes you are correct, if careful it's faster to replace the tyre whilst the motor is still in place.' Hope that helps!
I have both a pure air and xiaomi and I can tell you from both repairs at their stores and by myself at home they have made the xiaomi seem harder to do and I can also tell you the pure air takes far longer and is much harder because when re assembling the thru axle on the front is badly designed
I finally finished after an hour. One of the best tutorials on RUclips. If you do it alone it will take longer. If you have a friend you'll be done in a jif.
Now I know why the dealer for my scooter ( kaboo skywalker 8s )sells tyres with motor as single part . Also same deal with front wheel. Should say is solid.
I managed to change the inner tube without taking off the motor. And yes you badly need 3 vice grips to help you better. The rear tire is even more the hardest. Next time before even buying an escooter, I'll pick the airless tire to avoid so much hassle. Highly recommend recommended.
Just followed these instructions but instead of Mole Grips or pipe wrenches i got some Magnusson Ratchet clamps, they've got plastic pads with rubber covers so there's no need to tape and they hold really well. Took just about an hour to change the tube and i did very little scracthing to the front wheel compared to before i saw this video and i replaced the rear wheel tube which is scratched to all hell and the bead of the tyre got some damage too. I inflate the tyre before I install the motor. Much more access to the nipple and I can test how does it hold the pressure before assembly. Sometimes you get a pretty bad tube which just explodes when you pump it back up.
To repair a puncture that may happen within 1000km's, having to need to disassemble the motor is unbelievable! It is a nightmare! Settling off on board and returning by walking or public transport and all this crazy steps to repair it are something I can not afford another time. My scooter has gone and this adventure has come to the end.
this method is so, so much easier and safer than the brute force methods everyone else gives. Also your video is so clear and simple to follow - brilliant!
THANK YOU. I finally managed to replace my flat tire after the scooter been sitting on the shelf for months, because I gave up on being able to reattach the tire. This method made it work.
Why would you remove the stator(one part of the motor) from the rotor? seems to me like it only adds a bunch of unessecary work since it's not in the way of the tyre and tube. you also risk damaging the sensitive motor parts with the magnets hitting or scratching the sides when removing/installing. Am I missing something? I'm not a scooter expert, actually just got my first one recently. But I have a lot of experience in electronics and mechanical engineering.
If you try this youself you'll understand. it is basically impossible to put the front tube valve in the hole with the motor in there also the hole is on the side of the wire so it makes working on it super weird
@@martinzhang5533 Since my comment I have changed both the front and rear tube on my scooter. You can press out the valve through the tyre with your fingers. If it's hard to get it through the hole you can guide it out with a small screwdriver or something similar from the outside. These hub motors are designed to have the tyre and tube changed without disassemby of the hub, you know. I think it's important that people know because these motors are more sensitive than people think. It might not break right away, but little shavings from scratching while assembling can greatly reduce the life span of the motor.
Toke me 3 hours to remove the inner tube and put a new one. This Job is 1000X harder than what it looks. Make sure you you have plenty of tools and time before starting!
I'm not sure what's wrong with me but every single time I've tried to put on an air filled tube I've popped it. I've gone through 5 whole tubes. Every single time I've tried, I have popped the tube with the tire spoons. The amount of force required to get the last edge of the tire on is insane. I don't know how it's humanly possible to apply that much force delicately enough not to pop the tire but great enough to lever the last part over. What a frustrating mess. I have to replace my solid tire with another solid tire because yet again, I'm unable to get the spare tubes on, even with as much preparation and as amazing of a guide that I've watched. Sigh...
Well you can teach an old dog new tricks! I’ve watched loads of other videos suggesting the use of Vaseline, olive oil, WD40 and other lubricants as well as soaking the tyre in hot water to soften it. I’d almost given up until I saw this. A few minutes later the tyre was back on the rim. Fantastic! I guess I now join one of the proud few! (You should sell T-shirts) Thanks so much
🤦🏾♂️ I’ve taken my scooter to Halfords and now from watching this video, it a piece of cake to do. Wish I watched this video before taking my scooter to halford for the same issue , but thanks pure electric
I followed the video to remove the covers of the front tyre, but then found that I don't have the clamps or other tools to remove the tyre from the rim. So I got some technician from a shop to do it. I left the covers at home, thinking that I could put them back easily by myself. Then I found the covers did not fit!! after much struggle, I realized that the wheel was put back a little too low on the fork, blocking the covers. I had to unbolt the wheel, and moved it up a little higher up the fork, then the covers fit easily. One lesson learned. Small things that a video cannot cover, still a very good video. This technician, like another technician I hired before, also did not remove the motor from the wheel. I guess this is ok too.
Commenting for the algorithm. Thank you very much. I tried this technique today. While I did puncture the inner tube on my first try, it worked flawlessly on the second try. I just had to be much more careful the second time round to make sure that I didn't stick the tire levers in too far when using them to get the tire back on the wheel after inserting the new tube. I will say this however - that tire in the video is much more malleable and maybe even a little larger than my brand new 8.5" tire. There is absolutely no way that I could have simply pressed the tire back onto the wheel after inserting the tube, even when applying the trick of clamping the tire at two points. For me, it took clamping the tire at those two points (which is a brilliant piece of advice BTW), then gradually working my way around the circumference of the tire with the levers to get the tire back on. I didn't mind. It was slow methodical work, but it was not hard, and it was not tiring. I highly, highly recommend this video. I'll echo what another commenter said - there are so many clever little precautions and steps in this procedure that I never would have thought of, which seem very sensible and even vital. This video saved me a lot of heartache. I came out of the experience smiling and proud of myself for doing the job. I felt like I had achieved something. Application of this detailed, accessible, well-presented and well explained logical procedure allowed me to avoid the hours of frustration that I've read so many others have encountered. Thank you.
What size are the mole grips you are using ? I've got all the tools apart from the grips so have to purchase. Do you recommend I just buy 2 sets of mole grips? Will someone please explain to me why Xiaomi glues these screws in place. I mean, when you buy a scooter with pneumatic tires, literally the only malfunction you are ever likely to experience is a flat tire. So why did Xiaomi make it THAT HARD to remove a simple screw? Using all my force and turning the screw very very firmly, i still managed to destroy the screw notch. That screw is never ever coming out and my scooter is basically destroyed. Xiaomi, you know where you can shove your scooters from now on.
This vid made it relatively easy to change the tyre...I say relatively easy in the concept of easy the tyre itself was a nightmare to put back on well in my case had all the tools ..just the tyre was spawned from the arse of the devil resulting in me losing my shit with it multiple times before I managed to get it back on but managed it needless to say the video was really good and very informative to the process of changing the tyre
I have the Xiomi Pro 2 and gotta say the effort required to change a tube is enormous. So from that perspective the concept isn't really thought through by Xiomi.

I haven't been able to plug it in for days as I have only 1 pipe wrench.
The problem was solved when I realized that I missed a very critical information.
I had to tighten the piece of tire I tightened with the pipe wrench very well and push it towards the innermost part of the tire. It was also very good to lubricate the tire with vaseline.

Thanks for the tutorial. If this is your first time changing tire, trust me, it will be hard :) I followed the steps and it went just right. But I have changed tires and tubes many times on other vehicles so I knew what to expect.
Take your time. Use the pliers! And it will be okay. Use some soap to make the de/installation easier.
Also, don't forget to apply some sealant between the motor and the rim itself. A little bit of silicone is okay. Clean the old adhesive/sealant.
This is a fantastic and easy to follow guide. There are so many little tips that make the job easier. I would not have figured this out on my own. Thank you.

great video, I put my tire in the oven at 60 degrees celcius before putting it back on to make it smooth and flexible. Like that it is so much easier to mount it. I also never removed the motor as it was no needed for me. I use wood clamps for gluing to hold the tire tight. Smart to put the valve first , that was always a struggle for me and I even used a drill to make the hole a bit bigger.
Nasty little job, I've changed low profile car tyres in less time and man did I sweat doing this, haha. I really should have watched a few of these and got the tips before hand, I struggled with no grips had to use brute force and got the tyre nice and warm first.

The trick using the grips to is a life saver. I tried for many hours without success to get the tyre back on. This is the only way I've found to be able to do it. Really great video. Out of interest why do you remove the motor? I've found it just as easy to not bother

'We found that unless being extremely careful it is easy to damage the motor cable by pulling or dropping the motor, so we thought it would be safer to give people the full knowledge. But yes you are correct, if careful it's faster to replace the tyre whilst the motor is still in place.'

I have both a pure air and xiaomi and I can tell you from both repairs at their stores and by myself at home they have made the xiaomi seem harder to do and I can also tell you the pure air takes far longer and is much harder because when re assembling the thru axle on the front is badly designed

I finally finished after an hour. One of the best tutorials on RUclips. If you do it alone it will take longer. If you have a friend you'll be done in a jif.
And this is why you go with solid tyres.

Now I know why the dealer for my scooter ( kaboo skywalker 8s )sells tyres with motor as single part . Also same deal with front wheel. Should say is solid.
I managed to change the inner tube without taking off the motor. And yes you badly need 3 vice grips to help you better. The rear tire is even more the hardest. Next time before even buying an escooter, I'll pick the airless tire to avoid so much hassle. Highly recommend recommended.

Just followed these instructions but instead of Mole Grips or pipe wrenches i got some Magnusson Ratchet clamps, they've got plastic pads with rubber covers so there's no need to tape and they hold really well. Took just about an hour to change the tube and i did very little scracthing to the front wheel compared to before i saw this video and i replaced the rear wheel tube which is scratched to all hell and the bead of the tyre got some damage too. I inflate the tyre before I install the motor. Much more access to the nipple and I can test how does it hold the pressure before assembly. Sometimes you get a pretty bad tube which just explodes when you pump it back up.
To repair a puncture that may happen within 1000km's, having to need to disassemble the motor is unbelievable! It is a nightmare! Settling off on board and returning by walking or public transport and all this crazy steps to repair it are something I can not afford another time. My scooter has gone and this adventure has come to the end.
After seeing this I am ready to repair my Escooter
this method is so, so much easier and safer than the brute force methods everyone else gives. Also your video is so clear and simple to follow - brilliant!

Why would you remove the stator(one part of the motor) from the rotor? seems to me like it only adds a bunch of unessecary work since it's not in the way of the tyre and tube. you also risk damaging the sensitive motor parts with the magnets hitting or scratching the sides when removing/installing.

I'm not a scooter expert, actually just got my first one recently. But I have a lot of experience in electronics and mechanical engineering.
If you try this youself you'll understand. it is basically impossible to put the front tube valve in the hole with the motor in there also the hole is on the side of the wire so it makes working on it super weird
@@martinzhang5533 Since my comment I have changed both the front and rear tube on my scooter. You can press out the valve through the tyre with your fingers. If it's hard to get it through the hole you can guide it out with a small screwdriver or something similar from the outside.
These hub motors are designed to have the tyre and tube changed without disassemby of the hub, you know. I think it's important that people know because these motors are more sensitive than people think. It might not break right away, but little shavings from scratching while assembling can greatly reduce the life span of the motor.
Toke me 3 hours to remove the inner tube and put a new one.
This Job is 1000X harder than what it looks. Make sure you you have plenty of tools and time before starting!
I'm not sure what's wrong with me but every single time I've tried to put on an air filled tube I've popped it. I've gone through 5 whole tubes. Every single time I've tried, I have popped the tube with the tire spoons. The amount of force required to get the last edge of the tire on is insane. I don't know how it's humanly possible to apply that much force delicately enough not to pop the tire but great enough to lever the last part over. What a frustrating mess. I have to replace my solid tire with another solid tire because yet again, I'm unable to get the spare tubes on, even with as much preparation and as amazing of a guide that I've watched. Sigh...

Well you can teach an old dog new tricks! I’ve watched loads of other videos suggesting the use of Vaseline, olive oil, WD40 and other lubricants as well as soaking the tyre in hot water to soften it. I’d almost given up until I saw this. A few minutes later the tyre was back on the rim. Fantastic! I guess I now join one of the proud few! (You should sell T-shirts) Thanks so much

🤦🏾♂️ I’ve taken my scooter to Halfords and now from watching this video, it a piece of cake to do. Wish I watched this video before taking my scooter to halford for the same issue , but thanks pure electric
I followed the video to remove the covers of the front tyre, but then found that I don't have the clamps or other tools to remove the tyre from the rim. So I got some technician from a shop to do it. I left the covers at home, thinking that I could put them back easily by myself. Then I found the covers did not fit!! after much struggle, I realized that the wheel was put back a little too low on the fork, blocking the covers. I had to unbolt the wheel, and moved it up a little higher up the fork, then the covers fit easily. One lesson learned. Small things that a video cannot cover, still a very good video. This technician, like another technician I hired before, also did not remove the motor from the wheel. I guess this is ok too.
Commenting for the algorithm. Thank you very much. I tried this technique today. While I did puncture the inner tube on my first try, it worked flawlessly on the second try. I just had to be much more careful the second time round to make sure that I didn't stick the tire levers in too far when using them to get the tire back on the wheel after inserting the new tube.
I will say this however - that tire in the video is much more malleable and maybe even a little larger than my brand new 8.5" tire. There is absolutely no way that I could have simply pressed the tire back onto the wheel after inserting the tube, even when applying the trick of clamping the tire at two points. For me, it took clamping the tire at those two points (which is a brilliant piece of advice BTW), then gradually working my way around the circumference of the tire with the levers to get the tire back on. I didn't mind. It was slow methodical work, but it was not hard, and it was not tiring. I highly, highly recommend this video.
I'll echo what another commenter said - there are so many clever little precautions and steps in this procedure that I never would have thought of, which seem very sensible and even vital. This video saved me a lot of heartache. I came out of the experience smiling and proud of myself for doing the job. I felt like I had achieved something. Application of this detailed, accessible, well-presented and well explained logical procedure allowed me to avoid the hours of frustration that I've read so many others have encountered. Thank you.
How would you fit solid tyres. which would be a better option.
What size are the mole grips you are using ? I've got all the tools apart from the grips so have to purchase. Do you recommend I just buy 2 sets of mole grips? Will someone please explain to me why Xiaomi glues these screws in place. I mean, when you buy a scooter with pneumatic tires, literally the only malfunction you are ever likely to experience is a flat tire. So why did Xiaomi make it THAT HARD to remove a simple screw? Using all my force and turning the screw very very firmly, i still managed to destroy the screw notch. That screw is never ever coming out and my scooter is basically destroyed. Xiaomi, you know where you can shove your scooters from now on.
Drill out the screw and use a threader to make a new thread.

This vid made it relatively easy to change the tyre...I say relatively easy in the concept of easy the tyre itself was a nightmare to put back on well in my case had all the tools ..just the tyre was spawned from the arse of the devil resulting in me losing my shit with it multiple times before I managed to get it back on but managed it needless to say the video was really good and very informative to the process of changing the tyre

I have the Xiomi Pro 2 and gotta say the effort required to change a tube is enormous. So from that perspective the concept isn't really thought through by Xiomi.
