I really love it when you say 'Okay that's all I wanted to show you' and it's only halfway through the video :D
Thank you for all the tutorials and the calm and easy way of explaining things!
Thanks a lot for opening the door for me/us into the world of Scribus. Educational resources on Scribus are a rarity. Not to mention quality educational resources.
Hey man. I just want to say thank you for all that you are doing to bring attention and potential users to some of the really great Open Source projects that for whatever reason don't seem to get as much love on RUclips and therefore have more trouble finding dedicated user bases; like Scribus and Natron for example...both programs that I use regularly and struggled with learning because of a lack of quality tutorial content at the time.
You're welcome! We have similar views.
Thanks so much, TJ! Your diction was clear and easy to understand, not too fast, not too slow. Look forward to learning more from you. I do make a habit of donating to places online where I get free resources, and the wealth of what is available is amazing!
Thanks, I appreciate the feedback!
Just what I have been looking for, something up to date on Scribus! I have just found your channel and intend to work through your uploads. Excited, so thank you for this.
Same here! So good to see that someone did a wonderful video tutorial for using Scribus! It’s really useful for a absolute beginner :D
But still able to explain each stage in a basic manner. Honestly thanks man!
Thank you for taking the time to make these tutorials, I really appreciate it.
Hugely appreciate your channel. This is maybe the 3rd or 4th piece of software I've needed to learn which you've covered and you're absolutely my first choice of where to learn from. Thanks for the content!!
You are an excellet teacher...thank you so much for doing this for us!!!
Hi Jane, thanks for the kind words!
New to Scribus and really enjoying the beneficial information. Thank you =)
These tutorials are superb, but to get the best out of them is to open the Scribus program and follow each step TJ takes, and repeat it on your own document. Sometimes you have to stop and start his tutorial, and sometimes rerun part of it. He moves his cursor in ways that are not always obvious, so you may need to go back a few minutes to get it right. Otherwise, it is really good. So keep up the good work TJ!
Thanks for your sharing. Enjoy your teaching and learning Scribus as well~~
Thank you so much! Looking forward to watching all your vids on Scribus!
Very nice introduction, Thanks a lot!!!
Great Audio and context. Keep up the good work. Just found your channel
Thanks Eric! I appreciate the feedback.
Interesting that people are hung up on the pronunciation. Anyway, thank you for the tutorial! You always do a great job!
Brilliant! Thanks a lot
Very welcomed video! Thanks so much! Your effort is really appreciated!
That's great to hear. Thanks so much!
Some nice interfaces. I've never used Srcibus before some easy basic stuff here. Will be looking at the other videos.
Glad to hear it!
GREAT THANKS
Great intro. Thanks for your efforts!
Thanks Russ!
Thank you for your service 😊
I've been looking for something different from Microsoft that I subscribed to but they suddenly cut me off saying that my product is "unlicensed" even though I paid every month for it. And I don't have internet for updates. It sucks! So, I'm trying to find something different and your video came up. I hope this is truly offline. Thanks for the tour!
I needed some Scribus tutorials, and for some bizarre reason I didn't check your channel first. (Sorry, that won't happen again!) I just searched for tutorials and saw yours towards the top, so of course I went right to your channel, thinking "Duh!" Keep on being awesome!
Did you ever check out that Brian Regan special?
Great! Yes, watched a little Brian Regan on youtube. I'm pretty sure I've heard some of his older stuff a while ago. Super funny, glad you shared.
I've viewed all your Scribus tutorials and now am watching those for Inkscape. They are very helpful. The most cumbersome thing I've encountered is creating a table, adjusting table column widths, adding text boxes to each of those cells, etc. Do you have any tricks for lightening the load on tables?
Hi Sally. I haven't worked with tables much, but I like to use LibreOffice Calc (Spreadsheet) to create a table, and then copy or export it into whatever design program I'm using. LibreOffice also has options for styling tables, so that might be something try.
In professional workflow the procedure is to prepare all items for a document in their specialized programs. E.g. text in a text editor, photographs in a photo editor. The main purpose of your dtp program is to assemble those items into the desired layout and formats, then export in a file format dependent on the final destination. (pdf for printing.)
@@hansreynders6853 Thanks for that smart overview. I guess that's why Affinity has the Photo and Designer Personnas in Publisher. Convenient and more efficient.
Thank you for the tutorial. Very clear!
Wow, that makes it easy - thanks!
You're welcome!
I see no tool bar at the top of my screen after opening the app in MacOS!
Ok, so first of all my whole promgram is black and I can hardly see all those buttons you have at the top. I can't seem to change it. Secondly, I can't change the font at all even though I've set it a few times. It still won't budge.
is scribus any good for ebooks?
How to add text to a scanned document in Linux, also how to introduce your jpg signature in a document??
Very good tutorial. Thank you so much for this.
I click "Open file" on my 1.4.8 version of Scribus and I cannot get it to open a PDF file or even a RTF one.
What am I doing wrong?
Thank you.
Really enjoyed this tutorial. Your approach of explaining the "why" things are done, works well for me. Is there a Lesson 3 in the works?
Hey, would you be so kind to do a video about text style for table in Scribus 1.6.3?
Hi, i'm scribus starter and I think this is very useful video for starters even it's 2020 now! i'm too glad to discover this video. thank you for making this.
Umm, i have a question about getting fonts. I want to get Korean fonts but i don't know how to. Would you let me know how to get the fonts into 'additional paths'?
Thank you if you read my immatured English till now.
Hi, thanks for the kind words. Scribus should have access to any fonts installed on the system. If the font is installed in the OS (Window?) then it should be available in Scribus. I haven't tested this before, so I'll see if I can play with it a little, and see what I can find out.
@@TJFREE Thanks so much for replying!! And yes, it is installed in the Window.
How can i give hyperlink to the scribus
I downloaded 1.5.6.1 version of Scribus. I am not a computer techie let alone an in depth computer person. I am looking for simple, easy to follow tutorials that will allow my to format the interior of my novels. Nothing more. It's like a smart phone, TV, auto. You don't use everything on them. I need simple tutorials. I'm trying to follow you, but I have a different version. And, I downloaded Ghost as suggested. Both are on my desktop. What do I do with Ghost and why do I need it? I really am asking for help.

"color names if you're a girl" "color names if you're a guy" im dead
Hi TJ Free, thanks for the interesting videos. I picked up on Scribus to prepare some boardgame materials, but this will probably be useful to me in a professional context too. I would like to see a tutorial on how to prepare your work for printing: what are common pitfall I should watch out for? Etc. But thanks for anything so far, I admire the professional level of your videos. Kind regards, Pieter
anyone know general situations that adobe inDesign can do easy that for some reason scribus cant do?
I used scribus to self publish my kids book a couple of years ago. I want to update the book but the images of the pdf file are not appearing. Please help!
Thank you 😊, very good help me some much!
Plz help me, how to change the font size of some of the text in a text frame in scribus. When i select some of the text in a text frame and change its font style, it changes the whole text in a text frame
Wow, this program looks tough. Inkscape seems really easy. Have you made any pdf docs with this?
It can not manage table like Indesign or Word does, isnt it?
Hi! I'm trying to use Scribus, but my version doesn't have the toolbar across the top of the page. It has some of the tool options in the insert tag, but they don't work. Any ideas?
Just downloaded it for my iMac and got this error message. "Apple cannot check for malicious software. This software needs to be updated. Contact developer for more information." Cannot find a link on Scribus page. Can you tell me what I need to do? Thanks
thank u for the tutorials, appreciate alot....
Subbed Just for the Scribus, interested in some of your video editing ones too, please keep these coming! :]
Hey thanks alot for the tutorial
The best!
Great video but the screen is SO SMALL!!!! For that reason it's nearly impossible to watch...or maybe i'm just getting old.
Thanks Lisa. Sorry about the size. In my recent tutorials I've started using a zoom tool and a larger mouse cursor to help resolve this issue. Have a great day!
I’m hoping to switch from Mac over to LINUX for a lot of reasons, where I dont have access to InDesign anymore. Your tutorials are very welcome. But one big question before i make the jump, can i in any way have my previous books from InDesign transferred to Scribus? I have written 19 books with text, graphics, and loads of images and have some more in the making. Sometimes i make new editions of these, therefore i have to have access to previous versions. Hope you can help.
I remember you from Inkscape tutes. You do Scribus too?! I thought it was pronounced scribe-uss???
Could anyone tell me, why two buttons ( Arrows Ctrl-Z and Ctrl-Y undo and redo ) does not work on my computer. Did everything to solve this problem, even reinstalling Scribus. Unfortunately all for no result. Thanks in advance.
TJ can you please tell me about the scribus ISBN's that we can generate using this program.
Hi Lisa, I haven't used that feature in Scribus before, but I'll look into it and maybe do a quick video on it. I do have an Inkscape tutorial on bar codes, that I believe could be used to make ISBN numbers as well. Its here: ruclips.net/video/FjKswc86UoQ/видео.html
Awesome thanks!
my scribus says that I do not have ghostscript and it does not allow me to type nor add images. I did check my mac if I do have ghostscript, which I actually do. Can spmone help me?
Many thanks for this, will be watching the whole thing. Would also love to hear what you think of Apple's iBooks Author. Especially with respect to its supposedly closed nature.
Why is there no Video on the entire planet on how to export a bookcover with scribus?
why are my brochure prints SO DARK?
Thanks for sharing your knowledge. I love scribus. Early on I made the mistake of saving a book section on my desktop. Others I stored in a specific folder. I tried to copy and paste the first page to this specific folder, but found that all the images were missing, with just a filename there in a red box and red cross. I k ow the path has now changed, but Is there a way to correct this, or do I have to re-do the images one by one? (or just leave the page on the desktop?)
anyone?
just I was looking for
Glad to hear it!
If formatted in Scribus can the book be uploaded on kindle for a ebook?
Good question. I believe most ereaders have support for PDF files, so its defiantly possible. Scribus does not specifically have tools for formatting ebooks. Another good, free program to look into for this is Calibre.
@@TJFREE thank you!
Can I use it to write a book.
Scribus Looks very complicated...
Hi Rebecca. Yes, I used Scribus to make a history book once, and it turned out great. It can be a little complicated at first, but its not too bad once you get the hang of it.
Alignment center shortcut how to create
Excellent your tutorials. However, the only HUGE issue about Scribus are the too tiny icons on the toolbar. That's critical. New versions came up, some icons changed their design, but the developers failed to the make icons larger, or to add an option to increase them. So, as new tutorials are coming up, those way too tiny icons are VERY confusing with older versions on previous tutorials for new learners. I hope this is fixed ASAP, because it is not a small issue, (despite the fact that the icons are), particularly with people like me despite the fact that I wear good glasses. Thank you.
yes i dont have the same toolbar at top, trying to write text. no luck yet
i hope one day you will make tutorial to krita software
Can we use Scribys 1.4.8?
Hi TJ, thanks for the great videos.
I’m new to Scribus, although not a complete novice to its principals, having used InDesign before. Nevertheless, I have a million questions (and attendant frustrations) which the manual doesn’t answer and have failed miserably trying to register for the “Chat with the community” site. The only book I have been able to locate was published in 2004 so that probably won’t have all the answers.
Any suggestions on how I can progress, ask questions etc?
Does it support baseline?
Any body design a postcard using Scribus?
I haven't, but it would be a fun project. I tend to use Inkscape for print work like that. Scribus is ideal for projects that have lots of text.
Why are you using the development version, rather than the stable branch? The two are not the exactly the same; and, the development version is really only recommended for those who want to "test run" the upcoming release. So, your decision makes no sense to me, especially for a tutorial
Is it scr-i-bus or scr-ai-bus?
Thank you
My Scribus 1.5.4 does not allow me to save. How do I do it? In which folder or which type of a document?
How did you get the .exe?!?!?!
Hi! Is it used for writing e-books as well? Thanks!
Yes, Scribus can be used to create an ebook in PDF format. A better tool for ebook creation is a software called Calibre.
Tlank you very much, it asked me to download Ghostscript it wasn't installed on my computer, I've downloaded both thanks to you bless you in all your ways!
is it free??
Awesome video, followed your series for Inkscape and now it's time to learn how to use this. My only gripe - please pronounce it correctly! It's not "Scribbus", it's "Scribe-uhs" :D
(as in "bribe" then "us")
I've got a massive problem because I don't seem to get all of my tools appear along the top. If I hover the mouse over the (invisible) buttons I can get the tool tips appear and if I click and hold the mouse button down I get the button appear but I release it and it disappears again. I'm running Manjaro KDE with Plasma, Using Scribus v1.5.8
I'm afraid I have to disagree on the pronunciation.
How to open .indd?
Good question. Adobe makes a lot of money by keeping .indd files closed / propriety. You'll have to convert it to .eps or .ps before importing it into Scribus.
@@TJFREE Can I do this without indesign?
@@kkr2335 Everything I'm reading says QuarkXpress and InDesign are the only programs that can do this conversion...
Does it work with Windows 10? I saw a download for it but it only said Vista/7/8.
Yes, it works well on Windows 10. I made this tutorial using Scribus on Windows 10 x64bit.
how did you change your icon theme in windows?
I don't think I changed the theme, but I did resize the way they appear by holding down the 'Crtl' key while rolling the mouse scroll wheel.
You said it was good for printing, but would about just viewing a pdf. Some fonts are giving me troubles. The print version looks great, but the pdf is horrible.
Hi Janet. Opening a .pdf without embedded fonts can be frustrating. If you mean a project you created in Scribus looks ok when printed but bad when exported to pdf, maybe try printing to pdf, using your OS print dialog, or play around with changing settings on the Scribus export pdf dialog. Hope that helps!
@@TJFREE Thanks for your response. The problem seems to only occur with Arial fonts. Times Roman and Calabri don't create the viewing issue in a pdf. With Arial the letter l is blocky and fat. View the pdf look awful.
Ok but how to make flyer
OMG he is using GNU/Windows!!!
The tutorial is fantastic, but Scribus is not. Only suitable for few-page brochures. If you have 50 pages it crashes every time. Even if it's just text. Illustrations? Forget it. I am looking for a simple not expensive program but it seems I have to use MS Word.
Good series. Tx. But you talk too fast!!
Similar a Photoshop es JIMP

the audio sucks. but good content
I'm ok with the audio quality of this series. Glad you like the content.
az yavaş konuş
Not how it is pronounced but otherwise good.
I disagree, but I realize I may be in the minority. I read it the same way I would 'script' or 'scribble'. I only pronounce the long 'i' on words with an 'e' after the 'b', like scribe. I make Scribus do the same as words like as apparatus, stratus, impetus, syllabus...
i hate the way you pronounce scribus
That’s ok, but in case you’re curious. Apparatus, stratus, impetus, syllabus. These words do not have a long vowel, and neither should Scribus. English has pronunciation rules, and while there are many exceptions, I don't think Scribus qualifies for one. 'Time' and 'Scribe' have a long 'i' because of the 'e'. 'Sign' and 'Night' have a long 'i' because of the 'gh'. What would make 'Scribus' have a long 'i'?
@@TJFREE because it's not a real word so it isn't bound to english pronunciation. my logic was that it's just a warping of the word "scribe", so i pronounce it "scribe-us". also i just looked it up on wikipedia just to see where the name comes from and they actually have a pronunciation key there :P
@@TJFREE also: consider the pronunciation of "amogus" - checkmate.
Excellent, thank you !
Thank you
