This song appeared on one of my favourite Al Stewart albums Last Days of the Century. I don’t know what Al thinks of it but I consider it one of his best along with Modern Times, YOTC and TP!
Would someone convey this to Mr. Al Stewart himself. Thank you for the music....Mr. Stewart has such knack for melody...And, I get a sense that he did a lot of thinking....His lyrics reflected all that....Wonderful to have this man during My lifetime. I had the fortune to see him once in New Haven , Connecticut way back in the 1980's.....in this small café-restaurant....
Just went to Al Stewart on Jan 11 this year. Al is a really good entertainer so I enjoyed the show. I was a litle bummed He now has The Empty Pockets as His band so the show was mostly stuff newer than Last Days of The Century. I understand completely
Great song! Should have been a big hit! I had the album. Al remains very underrated. I've seen him twice in concert. Peter White is an exceptional guitarist! Thanks for sharing!
I should add, that it helps to know a few things about Portugal’s first king, Alfonso I to have a better appreciation for the song’s subject and meaning.
Fabulous! I wonder how many people know that this song was inspired by the 12th century King Alphonso I, conqueror of what became known as Portugal? Isn’t it always about a woman?
I've never seen the video of this song, so I had no idea that David Rappaport had starred in this video. I clearly remember him guest starring in two episodes of "L.A. Law" playing the role of Hamilton Schuyler, a lawyer going up against Victor, played by Jimmy Smits. Rappaport was superb in both episodes. Unfortunately he committed suicide with a gun in 1990.
Eines meiner absoluten Lieblingslieder. Ich bin ein grosser Fan von Al Stewart seit meiner Jugend. Das erste mal, dass ich das Video sehe! Grossartig! Thanks for posting!!!
Ohhhh !!! How many memories brings me this beautiful song , especially from my college times !!! This is the first time I watched this video after more than a quarter of century !! Thank you so much for this greatest and marvelous video !!
The quality isn't the best, but I couldn't be more pleased to see it as I believe this to be David Rappaport's last appearance on film before he died. He was an incredibly talented actor.
Wow! I long believed there was a music video for this song, though I've often suspected that I was mistaken the day I switched on VH1 and caught the last four seconds. So I had no idea David Rappaport was involved, which is a real treat. Hmm, I wonder where that albino model of the album cover wound up....
Saw him at some small venue in Seattle promoting his "Last Days of the Century" album back in '88 or '89, and he announced, with some amusement, that he'd just completed his first-ever music video. Quite sure this was the one. Wish I'd hung around in the lounge afterwards, though, because one of the friends I went with did and said he came around and chatted with everyone.
A dwarf dreaming of a hot woman, and shot in black & white?...... didn't U2 nick this idea for their video for All I Want Is You the following year, 1989?
1988年頃に、last days of the centuryを購入。この曲がいちばん好きでした。データを購入して車で聴いています。
Al Stewart, David Rappaport and an Ovation guitar! Three of my favorites in one place!
❤Love his music. ❤
Al Stewart is a f*cking genius

Fantastic memories of this tune! Fall of 1988! Great car song to listen to as I’m diving to camp, also a good tune to listen to at camp! 🙂🙂🎵🎵
2 of my favorite things: Al Stewart + synthpop. ❤️❤️

Al Stewart classic musician all time 🙂. King of Portugal. Still great song 😅 after all these years ❤️. Use to listen this song in my car 😂.
Al Stewart is too classy and smart for general public consumption.
I think he's the greatest songwriter who ever lived.
@@David-no7zi I'll drink to that! He is amazing. One of the greats for sure.
@@rushshukla4636 Cheers Rush!

@@lordjohndebrusch3597 Great post! I saw Al in person as a soloist. I almost got to meet him, but he got sick right after his performance.
This album is terribly underrated. Everybody played so virtouously. The last "real" rock album.
Thank you! I never thought there was a video for this great song. So pleased!
King Alfonso I would be very proud of this song!

I am from Portugal and didn't knew this song!
What a classy song. And I’m not just saying this because I’m Portuguese, but I just love New Wave.

Thank you! Thought I would never see this David Rappaport video again. In this song Al steward reminds me of Eric Idle. Good Job on reserecting this!
great song.
I agree great song !
I don't think I've ever heard this one before, I like it, thanks
Very nice song. Many years ago that I did not Hear it

I don't know how he could have forgotten his 1980 "Mondo Sinistro" and "Paint By Numbers" music videos.
A great song; is April Wayne the one playing Miss Portugal?
Super !
To everyone who likes this: Try "Josephine Baker"!
(Also on this album).
Our King of Portugal is dreaming of such a tall lady...
Buenisima es del año 89
very underated
I always thought it would make a great video if it were filmed in Portugal. Don't quite understand about the little man and his mirror.
Its a metaphor about the big fantasies of ordinary people
buena cancion
Vinnie...
Anyone know whether the percussion was a programmed drum machine or synth device? Sounds damn punctual on the beats but also too artificial.
Pretty sure all the rhythmic backing was programmed.
@@pmberry Thanks, Mr. Berry. Love the tune, AL Stewart, and the arrangement. One of his best.

Al issued this album in 1988, with this song, not much succesful
Mores the pity. It was too good for the UK charts. This and Fields of France are worth buying the LP/CD for alone.
My father recorded it in a cassette in 1988, aired in Cadena 40 Principales (Spain)
Ya, bring a King to Portugal, we need one :s Fucking Republic....
God bless this man! I'm portuguese as well, I feel you,..
Genau Bayer 1805 !!

King of Portugal = Al Stewart 8/15/2011
Why the "King of Portugal"?
Why not the King of England?
Or, if this is all fantasy, the King of the United States?
Rotebuehl1 Because Portugal was one of the mightiest empires ever.
Al said he'd visited every country in Europe, except for Portugal. Probably just one of his tall tales!
UNRECOGNIZE SOUND.ONLY THE VOICE OF ALYSTER STEWART.
Respectfully, this one doesn't do it for me.
