    Where does the term "Upper Half" and "Lower Half" come from? Is it from the service device so the rank insignia created the name? Great video and thanks!

    • @DeckplateTone
      @DeckplateTone Год назад

      It comes from the Navy decision to provide a distinction between the two.
      Both Ranks are Rear Admiral. Rear Admiral Upper/Lower Half right off the back gives the Navy a quick picture of how much ADMIRAL experience that person has.
      Rear Admiral Lower - Probably has worked in the pentagon as a star just yet
      Rear Admiral Upper - Probably has worked in the pentagon, ready for more big picture navy responsibilities.

    • @chiles79
      @chiles79 Год назад

      @@DeckplateTone Fair enough, but that leads me to ask where the term "rear admiral" came from? Does it tie back into wooden ships where the admiral is in the rear-most ship or something like that?

    • @pom2924
      @pom2924 Год назад

      @@chiles79To answer your question you have to look at the historical rank of Flag Officer which was created in 1850's to fill a specific billet due to Congress' unwillingness to authorize more than 4 officer ranks at the time. Eventually in 1861 it was converted into an actual rank yet in name was replaced with the former "billet" of Commodore(that was inherited from the Royal Navy when the United States Continental Navy was established) in 1862 which itself would be replaced in 1899 by Congress with "Rear Admiral".
      The reason for this was that the USN placed the rank as that of the lowest ranking flag officer(think O-7 of today) but would on reception not be treated with the same respect as the rank and office held by foreign dignitaries/officers as the commodore was traditionally a literal captain that was in charge of multiple units(think 1 skipper over an bunch of destroyers to put it super simple).
      This led to a dissent among sister services who had clear distinctions of O-7 to O-10 but the use of rear admiral was already to designate a O-8. This led to a situation where sister service staff officers would render a USN O-7 with the title and respect of the O-8. To fix this in the most roundabout way, Congress, instead of reinstating "Commodore" or Flag Officer, chose to dig in their heels and continue using Rear Admiral with the "Lower Half" denoting literally the "lower half of seniority" among all US Commissioned Officers.
      Tangentially related, this also had the effect of forcing the US Army(who complained really loudly over all of this) to equalize their Brigadier General rank also to the "lower half of seniority" to normalize rank structures.

    Is the navy swim test complex or complicated. Is it difficult for someone who has a decent ability to swim?

  • @stephenaulds
    @stephenaulds Год назад

    That's 12 years of GOOD service.
    Question for you. Many years ago, when I was a recruit at RTC we had a bank of maybe six or so irons lined up in our RDC's office. These irons were in boxes with the word "broken" written across them in sharpie marker. These were the irons we used to iron our uniforms. Below these boxes on a lower shelf were brand new irons that had never been used. These irons were just for show and were never used. In this way we never had to clean irons.
    Is this sort of thing still done at RTC? If not with Irons, with something else? For instance, we never used the urinals in the head. These were the "trophies" and were there only for show. We were only allowed to use the toilets.

    After 32-years in the Navy (I retired as a Master Chief in 1989), and longer than that as retired, the Navy's need to show itself as politically correct still amuses me.
    Case in point. The Navy instructed the fleet not to use the term "Man a ship" but, rather to say crew a ship. This is to show the world that it is not sexist...
    However, the Navy will "CREW" a ship with Sea Fire, Corps as well as Radio, etc. Now does that make sense????????

    Hello @AskaRDC, my son enlisted and he is currently in his first week of bootcamp. Before enlisting he was a member of the USN Sea Cadet Corp and earned an E3 ranking before enlisting. His recruiter submitted his upgraded paygrade to MEPS and provided us documention about his E3 ranking after bootcamp. My questions are, when does he get the uniform that signifies his E3 ranking? During bootcamp when they give their uniforms or after when they are officially sailors? Will there any other verification needed or its all part in the initial documentations? Thanks
