  • The City of Alexandria is one of the most diverse and vibrant communities in the state of Virginia. Yet, many can no longer afford to live in Alexandria due to outrageous housing costs. African Communities Together is fighting to preserve affordable housing throughout Alexandria and to push our representatives to institute tenant protections to ensure that all residents are able to live in dignified, safe, and affordable housing.
Housing costs are the biggest monthly expense for American households.
Across the country and right here in Alexandria, people are struggling to keep up with the increasing cost of living. It is not uncommon for Alexandrians to spend more than 30% of their income on housing alone, often having to make the impossible decision between paying for rent or paying for other needs such as healthcare. In fact, 78% of renters in Alexandria with incomes up to $75,000/yr are housing cost-burdened and eviction rates have only increased over the years.

The “Doors of Displacement” public art project is a multi-location installation designed by tenants of Southern Towers Apartments, that aims to shed light on the ongoing housing crisis in Alexandria, Virginia. The series features a collection of ten doors, hand painted by community members and highlighting stories of tenants facing eviction and displacement across the city.
