The way we treat low income people in the United States is despicable. The lack of affordable housing is so bad that in major cities teachers, police officers, fire fighters and other essential workers can’t afford to own or rent.

Just wait until all these illegals pop preggo with anchor babies! It will be OVER for America and Donald Trump will be POWERLESS to intervene! I hope you realize they are getting popped at this very moment, and Americans will pay the hospital bills!👶👶👶🤱And we can't have all those babies on the streets, so, they will get welfare, food stamps and PERMANENT housing, at taxpayers' expense! Of course, the illegals will be “required” to work, so there will be job programs for them also. In fact, the ONLY taxpayers remaining in America will be the NEW citizen "Supremacists"! My advice is to apply for dual citizenship abroad, at the VERY least! Trump can't save you, though I think he means well. Romans, Egyptians, Babylonians, Greeks and countless others never thought their nations would fall, just like American "geniuses". 🕳️

What this news segment didn’t mention is that not only has there not been any public housing built in several decades, but cities have actively been tearing down public housing and not replacing it with anything. This clearly exacerbates the problem.

Depends on the area. I live in So Cal, and in my city they tore down this huge section of old low income housing and rebuilt on that land, and increased the number of units 5 fold. They've been building new low income/affordable housing buildings over the last decade. There is still a waiting list, and it takes years, but not this long.
Before they started the housing projects here the wait list was 7+yrs, now it's down to around 3yrs or so. Hopefully they find a way to help some of these people find a home, even in the private market.
My mom was on section 8 when I was growing up. Single mom, 4 kids, 2 jobs. Very thankful that she was able to find homes for us to live in, and I'm thankful for those landlords who willing to rent their homes to someone on section 8. But my mom made sure we took care of those homes, because we knew that they weren't ours, so we need to respect it, and take care of it the way we'd want someone to take care of our belongings.

Public housing is so dangerous. I lived on a bus line that went through it and every place someone was killed there were sidewalk/curb memorials put up. MOST of them were for children, the ones who were hit by cars and drive by shootings. Sometimes there would be so many w stuffed animals, cards, little kids notes, crosses, flowers, and the child's favorite toy, and ppl on the bus would be in tears at seeing so many.
I think the cities tear the public housing down bc it becomes a blight and a disgrace in the community.
And ppl not in that group feel like there is no purpose to build more bc the ppl don't change so the situation will just repeat itself.

They made 250 billion dollars from it. I think all the cities and towns dealing with the massive boom in homelessness and all the troubles associated with it like crime, arson and cost of social services should also sue. The people who are desperate need to apply for vouchers in the less populated "flyover states". Yes, they'll have to move to the state and live there for a year, but after that year they can take the voucher somewhere else. Also, they might not know that if they *already have a voucher* they can use it to get into housing in their desired city, even while hundreds or thousands of people are still on the waiting list. Why? Because, the waiting list is to GET a voucher, and people who already have one don't need to be on the waitlist. They can port their voucher into the housing authority of the city they want to move to and take any available unit whose rent (and maybe utilities, in some cases) is under their voucher limit. But, I understand that people in survival mode aren't necessarily making the most strategic decisions. But, they need to.

Go house hunting in any of those markets and you won't find affordable options available. Unless you consider $4,000-$6,000 a month for an apartment, affordable.

    Loophole time!
If you are in an area that has a long wait time for Section 8 Vouchers.
Do some research and try to find out which Housing Authorities has a shorter Wait List. I live in a area that has a 2 to 3 month Wait List.
Once you do that, apply for a voucher for that area.
Instead of waiting 5, 8, or 18+ years for a voucher, you can get a voucher as little as 2 to 3 months.
Then you could port/transfer the voucher to the area of your choice.
There is a catch to port/transfer process.
Some Housing Authorities requires you to live on there jurisdiction for 1 year before you could port/transfer.
Some areas (like I live) only requires you to live on their jurisdiction at the time you apply for the voucher for in order to port/transfer the voucher.
    EDIT:
I do not know or sure if you could move (temp.) to the Housing Authority jurisdiction, apply for voucher, and moved back after you applied.
At least in my area, you have to show them an ID or bills with your current address to start the port/transfer.
I would suggest not to do that, otherwise you make be wasting alot of time and money moving.

There’s also another problem with section 8 housing. A lot of landlords do not want section 8 tenants because of the headaches and nightmare experiences so they won’t accept vouchers. Even if the section 8 tenant is a good tenant (a lot of them are not) the section 8 office that you have to deal with can be very difficult and stressful to the point where you just give up and choose not to accept vouchers.

This honestly goes both ways. If a homeowner accepts Section 8, they have to abide by the laws that go along with the receiving of government funds. So homeowners are required to fix any issues in the home, and if they don't, they can be sued, stop receipt of payment, and may have to pay back money for not keeping their home "up to code" with repairs and such.
My landlord is like that, kind of shady, owns a lot of properties. I pay my rent by myself, but I've asked about repairs and he gives me the run around. So I told him that I'll take him to court if he doesn't fix things that need to be fixed. I also said we can do a 2nd option, and that's I will fix things out of my own pocket, but I will give the receipt and pay the difference towards rent. Which he eventually agreed to.
2 units down a lady lived there with her son and was on housing and my landlord was hers as well. He wouldn't fix anything, housing was complaining. Then they stopped his payments, and it happened right when that eviction stuff happened with covid in 2020, so he couldn't evict her. They ended up suing him, housing did, and she did a civil case. They won, and she left. All he had to do was fix the things that needed to be fixed (mind you this was a townhouse thay was built in the early 1970s).

Most landlords only care about how they'll effect their units, I care about how theyll effect the area as well.

PEOPLE WHO DON'T LIVE IN YOUR COMMUNITY DONT CARE ABOUT YOUR COMMUNITY. THAT INCLUDES THE GOVERNMENT AND INVESTORS.

    • @andrewgeissinger5242
      @andrewgeissinger5242 Год назад +5

Government and the people who elect those governments often don't want affordable housing. If developers were allowed to build enough housing based on the demand, the housing supply would increase to meet the demand and that would bring down housing and rent prices tremendously and housing would be much more affordable, then you wouldn't need as much of these special low-income programs or tax breaks to build affordable housing. If enough housing existed, prices would come down on their own. But unfortunately a lot of people don't want the neighborhood changed so they elect officials to local governments who place zoning restrictions on what and how much can be built. There are also other regulations put in place, many times at the state level, which make it more difficult and more expensive to build more housing. All of this contributes to driving up the cost of housing. The situation is particularly bad in California because a lot of people want to live there, and the government entities at all levels have put in place more regulations than exist in most places that prevent the building of enough housing and make housing more expensive than it needs to be.

I don't understand. If she's been housed for 12 years while on the waiting list, why does she need to be on the list? She seems to be making housing work like most people.

Because, how much rent you pay on Section 8 depends on your income. Once you have the voucher, as long as you follow the rules, you get to keep it. You don't have to worry about getting evicted if you lose your job or get sick and can't work. That's why people stay on the waitlist so long, especially if they're a part of what's considered to be a vulnerable population like the disabled or the working poor.

If 90% of her income goes to rent, she definitely needs it. Many landlords will evict people for living with unrelated people, so she could get kicked out for doing this segment.

@@RosalindGash That's a great explanation of the benefits of Section 8, but it doesn't tell me why SHE needs it. I wish the interviewer would've explained that.

I have applied for housing and I was contacted back by the office and they kept highlighting that I didn’t apply for section 8 when I knew I didn’t apply for section 8 but they treated me if I was a literate. They just Contacted me after seven years🤯

The bureaucracy makes sure you don’t know that information unless you know where to find it. My new state is like that…I had to find my own information about how to get Medicaid as a disabled adult who is above the FPL.

I've lived in SD my entire life. You need to make at least 6 figures to afford a 1/2 bedroom apt. Its extremely expensive and its getting worse.
