30 Years - Imola 1994 (Nothing's New)

On this day 30 years ago, the darkest weekend in F1 history occured.
29th of April 1994
During Friday’s Qualifying Practice session, Rubens Barrichello lost control of his car at the high speed ‘Variante Bassa’ at 225kph/140mph. He miraculously escaped with minor injuries such as a broken nose, bruised arm and cut lip. He had been in F1 since the year before and continued to drive in it for another 18 years.
30th of April 1994
During Saturday’s Qualifying session, Roland Ratzenberger went off at the ‘Villeneuve’ corner at 315kph/196mph due to a front wing failure. He died instantly due to a basilar skull fracture. This was only his 3rd entry in F1. He died at the age of 33. It had been 12 years since the last time a driver had died during an F1 Grand Prix.
1st of May 1994
Entering lap 7 of the San Marino GP, Ayrton Senna went off at the ‘Tamburello’ corner at 305kph/190kph. The accident was caused by a steering column failure and Senna died over 4 hours later in hospital due to multiple fatal injuries. Upon examining his car, an Austrian flag was found that Senna had intended to raise in honour of Ratzenberger after the race. This was Senna’s 11th year in F1 and he was and still is seen as one of the best F1 drivers to have ever lived. He died aged 34.
After these horrific events, F1 underwent massive changes in order to improve safety.
