    Great video with helpful info. A big take away is that cane darkens over time. I purchased a sideboard with cane details that seem pretty light, but I think I'll be good with a little time based upon your info.

    I have a quick question… I am adding a rattan cane webbing to the front of flat cabinet doors to add some texture. I plan to stain them. Would you suggest soaking them in water and letting them dry first before I stain?

    What if the caning is visible from both sides, as on the back of a dining chair? We are refinishing our chairs and removing the old caning which after 40 years started breaking. It was stained and polyurethaned.

    • @onlinefabricstore
      @onlinefabricstore  2 года назад +1

      You can stain/poly both sides but it just won't last as long before becoming brittle and breaking. Being the back of the chair, it won't get as much wear and tear so it's possible it could last another 40 years!

    I have never replaced chair caning before, so I bought the chair caning mesh and see that one fide, the front, is already shiny and the back is not. Can it still be stained? If so how? When I wiped stain on it, it didn’t stick.

    I've been given a rattan chair that has been painted - presumably from the manufacturer - and the paint has faded from weather. Can I paint straight over the faded paint? And once I have, and it is dry, do I still add linseed oil to protect it? And is it going to be helpful to the rattan to only paint one side, or as it is already painted all over, is this not going to make a difference? Thank you so much. And thank you for your great videos.

    I just watched your video, as I am getting ready to use cane for the first time. I am building a cabinet, and want to use cane as the insert instead of glass, but want to spray paint it black. If I spray paint it before soaking, will the paint crack at all when the cane is drying? Also, when applying the cane to the wood, since it is wet, will that affect the stain on the wood at all? Thanks for any help you can give!

    Thanks for sharing these tips! I'm thinking of a project using cane webbing, I just have one concern, are cane webbing waterproof or is there a way (apply waterproof finishing or coating) make it waterproof? Thank you and hope to hear from you soon!

    • @onlinefabricstore
      @onlinefabricstore  3 года назад +1

      Cane itself isn't weather proof, but you can definitely use a clear coat to help it become weather resistant. I would use one of these - www.onlinefabricstore.com/hsearchresult.aspx?keyword=clear%20paint . The same rules will apply with this clear paint, only cover the front side, never the back.
      please note though, cane is not meant for the outdoors so it will most likely age prematurely (I would say you still would be able to get many years out of it, in optimal conditions cane can last 100's of years). To keep it looking fresh, I would recommend keeping it covered when it is not being used, and bringing it inside over winter if you live in an area that gets lots of snow. I also would avoid sitting on the cane while it is wet.

    Thanks for the video. I’m adding cane as an insert to a cabinet door that previously had a mirror insert. Should I soak the cane for installation before or after I stain it?

    • @onlinefabricstore
      @onlinefabricstore  3 года назад +1

      Soak the cane right before you install it! (so stain first) When you soak the cane, as it dries, it is going to shrink just a little bit, so you want to install it while it is still wet so it looks nice and taught. Best of luck with your project Marketo!

    • @onlinefabricstore
      @onlinefabricstore  2 года назад

      We haven't tried it personally but I would think Citristrip or one of those gels that doesn't smell terrible would work. They tend not to be as harsh as the smelly ones! It may be hard to get all the paint out of all the crevices though. Make sure to use an oil, like linseed oil, to condition the cane once stripped and dry so it doesn't get super brittle. Good luck, let us know how it turns out!

    Is your only option with stain to go darker? I’m starting an upcycle on a thrifted buffet table where there is cane on the doors, but I want to stain the piece a lighter color and would like the cane to match. Is cane able to be sanded and stained a lighter color?

    • @onlinefabricstore
      @onlinefabricstore  2 года назад

      You can only stain a darker color. I have seen people try bleaching cane, but it definitely damages the fibers so they are not able to hold weight any longer. That may work on your doors but it is a risk. You could try sanding, but VERY lightly as cane but it could cause it to fray.
      Here is what I would recommend. Cane darkens over time, and brand new cane is MUCH lighter than something that is 20+ years old. You would get the best results purchasing new cane and replacing it. It is a little more pricy, but you are going to be happiest with those results. Here is where you can find cane - www.onlinefabricstore.com/product-group-caning.aspx?product=cane-webbing

    • @onlinefabricstore
      @onlinefabricstore  2 года назад +1

      I think that your best bet is going to be finding a stain that you like that is a little darker than what is on there right now. Unfortunately, once the stain is in there, I don't think it is going to come out. You could try bleaching it.. I have never tried it, and honestly I would be hesitant to do this to a vintage chair, because I can not guarantee it would work the way you want it to. But it would for sure damage the cane and make it age prematurely.

      Yes, you can do both sides, but the cane may become brittle more quickly if the back is sealed and not allowed to breathe. This is fine if it's more decorative than functional (holding weight).

      I suppose you could, although I would probably go about it a different way. I would soak the cane, then while it is still wet place it on the plywood and staple it around the edges (staple one side and pull it super tight while stapling the opposite side) As the cane is drying it will pull even tighter and look really nice.
