"look at the muck in here" channeling Larry Grayson!!😀
Oh it still has the mystery vibration damper thing that 8000 people asked about on the message boards 20 years ago. A fair number of these front diffs were actually replaced under warranty when the disco 1s were still under 3 years old.
Looking forward to seeing that all cleaned up and reassembled. I wouldn't know a bsf bolt from a unf bolt!
Just goes to show these are pre war designs!
Of course with the cliffhanger, Looking forward to seeing them cleaned up.
If only I’d known you needed diffs…. I have two good units, one of them like brand new, that I have offered for free locally to avoid scrapping them. I would have brought them to you when I dropped by. 😔
No, I do not need them - this was just a small project to see if one diff can be made from two and work again - this will be on my shelf for years to come!
You ever did a m52 conversion. The defenders that were made in south africa had the bmw 2.8 i engine
Sorry no I have not .
I got a few of those laying around in the garden, in worse state than that one :) I might try the rust remover fluid thats Phosphate free, acidic solution and left soaking for a few days, I'm sure it will be pitted to buggery.
Pitting in gears due to rust is never a good thing! Scrap!
@@BritannicaRestorations Oh yeah def be scrap or welded into garden art
Anchors for small boats - Diesel Turbo 19J engines for larger craft...
@@BritannicaRestorations The only boat we want is a Amel 50
Thank you kindly. Currently building a series 2a v8 auto. Very helpful with rebuilding front diff!
My old Ranger (Mazda bt50) had universal joint greasers on the outside, I put 247k on it and never changed a joint...
Did you use it off roadz in the muck most of the time
@@mattluszczak8095probably more off road than you..! A lot of farm off road, and a 200 mile twice a week to see daughter in university
Yes a much better idea!
great project - i have 2 diffs waiting for rescue
You can do it!
Hi Mike great video my D2 carrier is a bit worn, can you buy the carrier, gears and pin separately? Thanks looking forward to part 2
When looking at the LR parts page
parts.jaguarlandroverclassic.com/parts/index/part/id/14.55781.56177.59696/brand/land-rover/
it seems they do not sell the carrier separately and there is no part number
However on the LR Defender parts site, there is a carrier available for the later models
www.lrworkshop.com/parts/FTC3269
you will have to check the axle number, and I cannot be 100% certain it is the same
Stripped my 'transfer case'(IRD) on my Freelander just recently...removing the bearing races was 'fun'. Unbeknownst to me a couple had shims in behind them...anyhoo I eventually released the races by either 'Bashing the f3ck' out of them or running a bead of weld around the race...those just fell out afterwards....I have a 'Clarke' bearing puller...have 'used' it several times over the past few years...its poorly named as it hasn't pulled a single bearing out for me as of yet...
Do you think that crown wheel is salvageable as that and a matching pinion must have some value etc...can it be saved? Would inteesting how to see how you would go about doing that Mike...
I think the original crown wheel is way too rusty and pitted, but I have a good matching pair out of the diff with the worn carrier
Mike can these 24 spline diffs go on to series trucks?
I'm going to say no, as I am not sure if 24 spline front drive shafts are available for the series - not seen one for years
@@BritannicaRestorations so the front diffs on the series trucks are 10 spline 2 pin rover jobs?
As far as I know yes. Even the early Defenders and RRs were 10 splines
