  • Why the Long Nose Truck DOMINATED THE US Market BRINGING DOWN! Cab Over Truck Industry and Sales
Cabover trucks, sometimes referred to as cab over engine trucks, were a common sight on American roads during the exciting 1970s. These trucks were a major force in the trucking industry and were distinguished by their flat-front design. Their widespread presence on the country's highways can be attributed to the efforts of leading manufacturers such as Mack, GMC, and Freightliner. Cab over trucks have their roots in pre-World War II days on the busy East Coast, when laws limited truck lengths to approximately 65 feet (19.812 meters), which included the truck and trailer. Manufacturers came up with the creative cab over engine design in order to maximize cargo space under these limitations, compromising some driver comfort by shortening the cab to accommodate more cargo. Cab over engine trucks, or COE trucks for short, have a unique design in which the driver's cab is situated directly above the engine, as opposed to in front of it like in regular trucks. With the steering wheel directly above the engine, this arrangement brings the driver closer to the windshield. Cab over engine trucks became very popular very quickly because of their small size and great maneuverability, especially on small roads and in urban areas.
They were adept at maneuvering through confined areas like loading docks and city streets because of their agility. Because of this, cab over engine trucks are widely used in many different transportation-related industries for a variety of purposes. The popularity of the cab over engine design, however, gradually faded in the United States after regulatory changes in 1982 limited the length of trailers rather than the entire truck assembly. On American roads, conventional trucks with longer hoods became more and more common. Though flat-front cab designs were once preferred in both Europe and America, their divergence on European roads was caused by differences in legislation regarding overall vehicle length.
