I've followed you since back in the "model train journal" day's, I have to say, you've inspired me since then! I'm a huge "post war" Lionel fan, and to even think of weathering, or painting on a post war car or engine is absolute SIN!!! 😆 however, there are several less expensive, very common cars I've wondered about weathering, so? As soon as the new layout is built, ( went through a personal problem) I will give it a try. Love your attention to detail, and scale! But like I said, I love my post war Lionel, so, my angle is of the same thinking as you, with a bit of nostalgia involved.
Norm, I saw you at York and asked what you found. So glad to see it on this video. As always, enjoyed seeing you at work and explaining your process of doing everything.
Theater Scenery Car, huh? Makes sense but I'd never heard of this until this video. I can think of no better home for this than your own layout. I love the car's name. Very interesting weathering, I'll try that on my next freight car!
There are presently 2 copies of that book listed on the ABEBOOKS website and at reasonable prices. In my opinion this is a great source for out-of-print books. You did a fine job refinishing that 3rd Rail car. Most of us may not be old enough to remember when Broadway shows along with props and scenery traveled between cities by rail. Probably all done by tractor trailer nowadays.
"I don't know if anyone would notice that." You, the owner, do over time. I always have said with my models and always end of adding all of those parts.
Norm - give Tru-Color paints a try - I really like how they lay down, even unthinned, straight out of the bottle. Dry very quickly with great adhesion. Your finished product looks great as always. Steve
Right on Norm that is a very cool car and even though there were very few made its definitely a car you you need at least one of!!! Your wash is also cool, I use black craft paint from Hobby Lobby thinned with some wiper solvent which also flows good thru my airbrush!!
OK........Last week I bought two PRR baggage junkers off ebay to expand my roster. Like you I like buying fixer uppers. While I was waiting on those I pulled my Weaver PRR B60b car from storage to get her ready for layout duty. We on the same wave length?? Always like your weathering vid.....Thanks PS I like to pull these with my T-1
Beautiful car, Norm. Was the Tamiya the German Grey XF63 by chance that you were using? I really enjoy Vallejo paints and now getting into using Tamiya teh past year. Using a bit of Mr. Hobby Leveling Thinners with the Tamiya in the airbrush can make for a great finish and to help more quickly dry the acrylics from that tacky feeling you were mentioning.
Yes, that’s the color I used. I just tried Vallejo Black Gray on another project and it seemed to be a good replacement too. Thanks for the tip on the thinner. I may give it a try.
I've never used dullcoat. What brand do you suggest for my first attempt to duplicate your process? Also got my first t88 omni 5000 airbrush, tamiya and vallejo acrylics that Boomer prefers. So a lot of first time experiences for me. gary j
I really like using airbrushed Dullcote when doing a wash job like this. My favorite acrylic flat clear was made by Testors/Model Masters but it is no longer available. I have some Tamiya to experiment with hopefully soon.
I am thinning the dullcote 50/50 with lacquer thinner mostly because my bottle is getting a bit old and the dullcote has thickened a bit. The Tamiya and Model Air was shot without thinning. I stay around 25-26psi.
Norm, please tell me how your experiences have been dealing with Scott Mann over at Sunset 3rd Rail. I'm really interested in venturing out into 3rd Rail brass but have heard some not so good things regarding 3rd Rail's warranty policies and some comments made by Scott Mann by a number of friends of mine and local dealers in my area who have dealt with him. Would love to hear back from you.
I mostly get my ERR boards from him but have had some success with getting parts when I needed them. The only new product I got from 3rd Rail was the B&LE SD9 which has been traded off.

Fascinating passanger car, liked the paint and pull technic you used on the sides...

The Pennsy, was such a grand railroad!!!

cheers for that, lots of good work there and an interesting car I not seen before
Never thought of weathering with acrylics that way. I am looking forward to trying this on my Pennys passenger cars.
Awesome video friend!!! I like the weathering job always 👍🚂
Beautiful car! Love the weathering tips. Great vid, as always.

I’ve been using some acrylic craft paint lately. Have not tried it in the airbrush yet.
Nice demonstration and a really unique car.
Great effort
Norm - looks great! you even painted your thumb... I usually weather myself in the process too
Yes I did - no extra charge! You going to the thing tomorrow?
@@normstrains - Going on Saturday for sure. Not sure about Friday due to the weather.
@@johncrowley3722 ah that’s right! I’ll be there Saturday. Going to check out the Saline show in the morning. Big train day!
Excellent! 👏😏
Awesome video! Your work and layout is a real inspiration. I’m good fiends with your pal Greg From bridgvue
Nice work Norm! No more kadee or styrene shims needed with your new 3D prints.
Very cool Norm! Would you consider doing a video covering how you did your signals?
I am hoping to do that soon!

You might find those books from "Ron's Books".
Yes you’re right, in fact that’s who used to come out to Ypsilanti!

Did you end up finding a comparable paint to grimy black that you like? I use Model Masters also & haven’t found anything I like.
I like Tamiya German Grey lately. I tried some Vallejo Model Air but didn’t like it so much.
What are you using to thin the airbrush paint? Ratio?

@@normstrains thanks! Your work is great.
with car name like Juliet there has be matching car called Romeo right?
IRL there was. Not sure what names 3rd Rail did, but here’s the brochure: www.3rdrail.com/images/sunset-10-11.pdf

Your so fortunate. Here in nj, there is not a single train store left and my health problems dont allow visits to NYC and trainworld.
