Even Phantom of the Opera author told this is the version how it was intended to be. Problem was in era that Phantom of the Opera went popular and after first version everyone imitated it.
Wanting to be "unique" in this one, you've totally succeed... Even Utuub's most 'successful' (by views/subscribers) voice coaches have liked this rendition, one after another! So is it dissability to hear skillful execution on singing or narrow - minded liking on vocalization(???) 🙄 But Hey... We are all entitled to our own opinions... 🙈

It's definitely spookier and more atmospheric. I just didn't like the contrast. Loved the reverb and her vibrato, but not the two voices together. Obvioulsy their fans disagree, and that's super cool with me. I love supporting artists.
Marko was totally in character for the phantom - I like this much more than the Opera style singers. To see a totally different side of Marko try Islander from the Tampere concert or While your lips are still red from Wembley. Marko Hietala s really a fantastic singer and very versatile, he is one of the big names in Finland. He left the band after the last album due to his general dissatisfaction with the music industry, has taken a year or so of thinking time and is slowly getting back in again with some small projects.
Yes, Tarja is fantastic. And the dude (😁) is the Finnish national treasure, a man with many kind of tunes and styles. Together they are beyond fantastic. 🙂
All I can say is that this is not musical theater. This is metal. And thus the way Marco sings fits like a fist to ones nose. He can sing what ever way he wants. He is that good. He is the most evil phantom of the opera ever. And I love it.
Thank you for being so honest in your reaction to this song. Much of the Nightwish fan base, myself included, loves this version particularly because of Marko. His snarly, growly Phantom seems to fit the character better. But, I can see where, if you grew up with the musical version, this one can be a real shock to the system. Marko was with the band for about 20 years, and is a huge part of making the band who they are today. He left the band a few years ago, unfortunately, due to having some depression problems. But, he is now better, and out on his own. Marko is sometimes called the "Father of Metal in Finland" and had a long and varied career before joining Nightwish. He is well loved and appreciated by those who love Nightwish.

Marko was praised by the original composer of phantom of the opera, because he put so much drama into it to make the phantom sound more crazy/unhinged. His voice suits the phantom perfectly! Every vocalist ive watched is impressed by performance. You're the first person I've watched who isn't impressed by his voice 😂

The male lead (Marko) is capable of singing the way you would have preferred, so this was a style choice that the band selected deliberately. Some people love it and others do not. One thing I love with this particular version is that Marco brings a different aspect of the Phantom, a dark and sinister aspect. Which is relevant 'cause we're taling about a phantom, a ghost. Off course the Phantom has t be seductive but he also has to be kinda scary.
I think Marko's vocals are friggin' amazing, but I appreciate your honesty nevertheless! You might prefer Nightwish's more modern rendition of this song with Floor and guest singer Henk Poort. Henk does add a bit of growl to his voice at times, but he's an opera singer, so you may very well prefer his version!
Wow. Very first time someone wasn’t impressed by Marco’s vocals in this version. I prefer this version over the operatic one. Nightwish is metal, therefore they put their own sound to the piece.😉

Marco is the final piece to the jigsaw that is Nightwish. Its okay not to like his vocals. Opinions are like onions, they have many layers. Marco for me IS Nightwish.
I was at this concert, Tarja was feeling really sick and had to go offscene between songs to puke. Still managed to complete this epic farewell concert (she didn't know it was a farewell).

Look at the version where they feature Henk Poort. It is a Dutch Opera singer (Who did play the phantom in the musical in the 90's) who embraced Metal music (a little) and happens to be a personal friend of Floor Jansen. I love this version way more.

Marco sings it that way on purpose and I find his view of what Phantom should be more familiar. Before recording this song, Marco said, "I was listening to musical version and I thought, 'OK, I'm not really ready to do this, but maybe I could sing it as a raving madman'" "Why a madman if he's just in love?" I love this version and Marko's voice. I think it's the first time I've heard that someone doesn't like his voice in this song 😀, but that's fine, we all like different things. Tarja sings Phantom of the Opera often in her solo career. I take daily Floor Jansen voice every day for almost 10 years now, so its obvious where my loyality lies here lol. HOWEVER Tarja is undeniably original spirit of the Nightwish and one of the most talented sopranos ever lived. What a legend. also..... Marco..........
gotta say Marko is an amazing singer and it actually really shows in this song. His harsher style really brings the Phantom's personality across and even looking just at technique: he actually sang even higher here than Tarja did. Interesting fact and fun rumor. The two singers here are Tarja and Marko. Tarja was fired in 2005 and Marko left in 2021. Rumor has it that Tarja & Marko will be collaborating on an album. Tarja is currently on tour and Marko has been making appearances with her on stage.

I think Marko makes the best villain ever in Phantom of the opera and the combination of their voices is the best ever. Absolutely fantastic performance of this classic. In other versions, the villain is just lame after hearing Marko.

Typing on this old phone on this site getting hard. Will do my best to give insights. Marco joined NW in 2001. 2nd bassist. 1st dedicated male vocalist. Bedfore him from 96 to 01 either Tuomas (keyboards/composer sang or a guest did. Often times the literal and figurative giant of Finnish metal Tapio Wilska. A hint Tuomas is 6'5". Tapio is a few inches taller and much broader then him. Tarja by comparison is 5'4¹½". Marko about 6'2". He had some classical training. No doubt some from Tarja. The lady has been singing since about age 3. Age 6 gave her 1st church recital. Sang in highschool. Moved to a school of music to get her secondary education. Then to a German Music academy where she was able after a break to tour with NW, her masters in music. She has trained to sing different genres and styles over the 25 years of her career. Solo from 2006 on. Marko and Tarja often played off the theme of beauty and the beast, ( I will let you guess which was which😂). Andrew's Lloyd Webber did like this version as his favourite non stage version Someone said it best imho that this version sounds like it was sung by adults not teens/young adults. A valid choice. It is Nightwish's version of the song. Written around the time of the movie with Emmy Rossum and Gerald Butler. These two ruin that version for sounding weak and hollow in my ears. But quite right, love what you do,for whatever reason. Apologies to no one. Taste is in the ear of the listener. They only were together in the band 4 years. But the chemistry between them is undeniable, close friends. Maybe brother sister type bond. Marko is 10 years ~ her senior. They made beautiful music together. And after this night they have shared a stage 3 times. The festival in Switzerland was Sat July 08,2023. No denying how happy they were to share the stage together again. If you want to see his more classical softer side, there is the 1st reunion on Finnish tv in Xmas 2017. They sang Ave Maria together. Or from this same concert you might try another song they sing together called Siren. And oh boy is Tarja ever a siren. It has the backing of The London Symphony and Metro Choir Voices. 1st used on the 5th album Once (04). Which this was the last date of back in Helsinki, at the then named Hartwell arena. 11,500 in attendance. October 21,2005 (a Friday ). There's plenty of footage over the years of classic NW. End of an Era taken from the name of the DVD released the following summer. At the time it was called Once upon a tour. The name came from Tarja's departure. 96 to 05 as ⅓ of the founding members, Tuomas and Emppu lead guitar.
Trust me Marko can definitely sing..this is not what he can bring. High Hopes, Ever Dream, Islander are among the best from Marko. Also I'm shocked that you think he was bad, he went higher than Tarja for a couple of seconds too.

Think you wasn´t ready to accept a different more evil approach of the phantom and probably awaiting a nice hero kind of guy/singer. In the usual versions the phantom always sounds very nice and kind of adorable which imo doesn´t match the character at all at least at the time that this song comes up in the musical. So for me his more evil sounding phantom fits perfect to a character who should give you some scary vibes and not some "oh what a nice phantom he is" vibes.

We love Marko. You misunderstand - this was not meant to be the original song. However, you might be interested in the version at the Viggo Dome with Floor Jansen and Henk Poort (who played the Phantom onstage in the Netherlands).
Honestly, thanks for being honest, lol. 99% of the reaction channels only pander to the audience requesting the song, and are very insincere about the performance, in order not to upset anyone. If you didn't like the male vocalist, that's absolutely fine. It makes sense if you were expecting a performance similar to that of the musical. His approach is very different, and there's nothing wrong about you being honest about it.
The dude is an amazing singer. Yeah you expected his vocals to be like those other Phantoms of the Opera: clean vocals. He can sing clean vocals, but little vocal distortion to the voice, and that's the chef kiss stuff! Btw: some people think Tarja sang all songs like this (highly operatic and clear voice). No, no. She also sings with soft and sweet vocals, both classical and contemporary. Liseten for example "From Wishes to Eternity" 2000 Tampere concert, and most of the songs are sung completely different than this. There's so many approaches. - Many, many people actually love the style Marco played Phantom's role in this. Didn't know you do music videos. I had seen a few of your other reactions. I'm just saying... Ziggo Dome in Amsterdam 2022 Nightwish Live feat. Henk Poort. Henk was one of A.L.Webber's favorite phantoms. So this version was kept a bit more classic and Floor shines at the end with a 12 second F6 high note!!!
Im not going to be too harsh about this since a) its your personal opinion and each to their own, and b) your new to NW, so arent familiar with Marko. To answer your question 'do you guys like him?.... Is he a usual part of the band?', no we don't like him, we absolutely LOVE him! He was the bass player and second singer, and occasional co-songwriter, for Nightwish for 20 years, and is a much loved member of the band...because of his voice and his talent. I can tell you, having seen them live, there is nothing 'forced' in Markos voice - he can go from super aggressive to soft and gentle, and has an impressive falsetto. Basically, the man is a legend and an influential figure in European metal. To get a wider perspective on Marko as a singer, you could check out The Islander, or their cover of Pink Floyd's 'High Hopes', or his solo song 'Dead Gods Son'. Obviously, his voice might still just not be to your taste, and if so thats fine, but you might also find his voice more to your liking on those songs.

Marko just sang as a perfect Phantom. I think the voice was perfectly fitting the character. Much better than the movie, where the phantom have a clean voice doesn't go with the 'horrific' character.
For me, this is peak Nightwish, this is the Nightwish I discovered and loved. Marko and Tarja go together like PB&J...bread & butter...cookies & milk. Marko can definitely sing great cleans; his vocal choices, imo, are them bringing a metal grit to the song. It's dark, about the Phantom posessing the singer, so the grit fits perfectly giving a sinister shading the song desperately needs. Not too long ago in July 2023, Marko and Tarja did a rendition in Switzerland, the first time they'd performed together in 18 years. ruclips.net/video/a2Uhb3Ha0EQ/видео.html In this one, he dials back the grit, and along with the slower pace, it feels more like the original musical. Definitely don't give up on Marko; he's got some great vocals in other NW songs, as well as his original band Tarot and the supergroup Northern Kings. I really recommend you check out Tarot (Ashes to the Stars, I Walk Forever, Wings of Darkness), and on the NW side While Your Lips Are Still Red, The Islander, Master Passion Greed for Marko, and Over The Hills, Wishmaster, Nemo, The Siren, & The Pharoh Sails To Orion for peak Tarja. Marko IS a terrific singer! But when you anticipated a more classic approach...well this was not it. They are really milking the "the beauty and the beast"-theme here. And it is metal after all, so there must be metal screams. From your reaction I would think your favorite might be Floor and Henk on the "Beste Zangers"-show. Henk Poort has been the official Phantom for many years, but especially for Floor he threw in some grit in his voice.

Interesting interpretation of Marko's voice. RUclips has several prima opera soprano reactors who actually were so taken by Marko's voice that they spent more time on his performance than Tarja's. He has an amazing, versatile voice. He and Floor blend so well vocally. Tarja has embraced a more versatile vocal style since leaving Nightwish, and for 18 years has been releasing wonderful music. Phantom was my introduction to Nightwish. Love all their singers, all their songs. I do hope you listen to more. Try Ever Dream, from the same Wacken 2013 concert.
Maybe someone already asked this but why didn’t you put Bakery shop or something while in Germany for example? It would’ve showed the ones in the area. Thats how we always looked for some while driving there. 😊
Tarja and Markos voices are for me NW, when Tarja was fired she took the femal voice with her and no one have been able to replace her. And when Marko left he took the male voice with him, so now NW sound like a pop/ Celtic folkmusic band, not a symphonic metalband. And I think this 10th album they are doing now and they are not touring, just release the record next year, will be the end of NW. Maybe they do a reunion in 5 years or more but I don’t think so. Tuomas and Troy go on with Arie, Floor try to go solo or join a band, Emppu have another band..and the rest have probably other project to do. And when it comes to Tarja and Marko they have just releast that they are touring together in South america 2024, and I do hope they take the toure to Europa too.
Everyone has their own opinions as to what sounds right for them....if you want a more traditional male lead try Nightwish.. Floor n Henk's version. Personally I think Marco makes this song special....hes one of the best singers around....he gives it power....nothing strained in his vocals...and he gives the "phantom" a fear factor that is missing to me in all other versions....but...you tell it as you see it...if we all liked the same things wouldn't the world be a boring place....

You could search for Tarja instead of nightwish, phantom of the opera. She has performed it on her own shows with other male singers. I would also recommend Floor singing "vilja lied" from the dutch tv show beste zanger, well practically all the songs she sings in that show ;-)

Marko Hietala s really a fantastic singer and very versatile, he is one of the big names in Finland.
He left the band after the last album due to his general dissatisfaction with the music industry, has taken a year or so of thinking time and is slowly getting back in again with some small projects.
Also High Hopes from the same concert as this one is truly amazing and shows Marko's talent as a singer. Also Jukka and Emppu do a great job as usual

All I can say is that this is not musical theater. This is metal. And thus the way Marco sings fits like a fist to ones nose. He can sing what ever way he wants. He is that good. He is the most evil phantom of the opera ever. And I love it.

Thank you for being so honest in your reaction to this song. Much of the Nightwish fan base, myself included, loves this version particularly because of Marko. His snarly, growly Phantom seems to fit the character better. But, I can see where, if you grew up with the musical version, this one can be a real shock to the system. Marko was with the band for about 20 years, and is a huge part of making the band who they are today. He left the band a few years ago, unfortunately, due to having some depression problems. But, he is now better, and out on his own. Marko is sometimes called the "Father of Metal in Finland" and had a long and varied career before joining Nightwish. He is well loved and appreciated by those who love Nightwish.
Marko's snarly, growly Phantom with an ugly voice hardly could teach Christine Daaé to sing opera( Christine says herself he is an unseen tutor she knows only as the "Angel of Music",she confides that the Angel has visited her and taught her to sing ) 😉
Marko was praised by the original composer of phantom of the opera, because he put so much drama into it to make the phantom sound more crazy/unhinged. His voice suits the phantom perfectly! Every vocalist ive watched is impressed by performance. You're the first person I've watched who isn't impressed by his voice 😂

One thing I love with this particular version is that Marco brings a different aspect of the Phantom, a dark and sinister aspect. Which is relevant 'cause we're taling about a phantom, a ghost. Off course the Phantom has t be seductive but he also has to be kinda scary.
I think Marko's vocals are friggin' amazing, but I appreciate your honesty nevertheless! You might prefer Nightwish's more modern rendition of this song with Floor and guest singer Henk Poort. Henk does add a bit of growl to his voice at times, but he's an opera singer, so you may very well prefer his version!
Wow. Very first time someone wasn’t impressed by Marco’s vocals in this version. I prefer this version over the operatic one. Nightwish is metal, therefore they put their own sound to the piece.😉

I was at this concert, Tarja was feeling really sick and had to go offscene between songs to puke. Still managed to complete this epic farewell concert (she didn't know it was a farewell).

Look at the version where they feature Henk Poort. It is a Dutch Opera singer (Who did play the phantom in the musical in the 90's) who embraced Metal music (a little) and happens to be a personal friend of Floor Jansen.

Then Floor Jansen also has her versions, their current singer who has sung Fantom several times since 2019, but she has a different approach, not a lyrical soprano like Tarja, but her versions are also very popular among fans. I think the original musical didn't even require a lyric soprano.

His harsher style really brings the Phantom's personality across and even looking just at technique: he actually sang even higher here than Tarja did. Interesting fact and fun rumor. The two singers here are Tarja and Marko. Tarja was fired in 2005 and Marko left in 2021. Rumor has it that Tarja & Marko will be collaborating on an album. Tarja is currently on tour and Marko has been making appearances with her on stage.

Typing on this old phone on this site getting hard. Will do my best to give insights. Marco joined NW in 2001. 2nd bassist. 1st dedicated male vocalist. Bedfore him from 96 to 01 either Tuomas (keyboards/composer sang or a guest did. Often times the literal and figurative giant of Finnish metal Tapio Wilska. A hint Tuomas is 6'5". Tapio is a few inches taller and much broader then him. Tarja by comparison is 5'4¹½". Marko about 6'2". He had some classical training. No doubt some from Tarja. The lady has been singing since about age 3. Age 6 gave her 1st church recital. Sang in highschool. Moved to a school of music to get her secondary education. Then to a German Music academy where she was able after a break to tour with NW, her masters in music. She has trained to sing different genres and styles over the 25 years of her career. Solo from 2006 on. Marko and Tarja often played off the theme of beauty and the beast, ( I will let you guess which was which😂).

Someone said it best imho that this version sounds like it was sung by adults not teens/young adults. A valid choice. It is Nightwish's version of the song. Written around the time of the movie with Emmy Rossum and Gerald Butler. These two ruin that version for sounding weak and hollow in my ears. But quite right, love what you do,for whatever reason. Apologies to no one. Taste is in the ear of the listener. They only were together in the band 4 years. But the chemistry between them is undeniable, close friends. Maybe brother sister type bond. Marko is 10 years ~ her senior. They made beautiful music together. And after this night they have shared a stage 3 times. The festival in Switzerland was Sat July 08,2023. No denying how happy they were to share the stage together again.
If you want to see his more classical softer side, there is the 1st reunion on Finnish tv in Xmas 2017. They sang Ave Maria together.
Or from this same concert you might try another song they sing together called Siren. And oh boy is Tarja ever a siren. It has the backing of The London Symphony and Metro Choir Voices. 1st used on the 5th album Once (04). Which this was the last date of back in Helsinki, at the then named Hartwell arena. 11,500 in attendance. October 21,2005 (a Friday ). There's plenty of footage over the years of classic NW. End of an Era taken from the name of the DVD released the following summer. At the time it was called Once upon a tour. The name came from Tarja's departure.

Think you wasn´t ready to accept a different more evil approach of the phantom and probably awaiting a nice hero kind of guy/singer.
In the usual versions the phantom always sounds very nice and kind of adorable which imo doesn´t match the character at all at least at the time that this song comes up in the musical.
So for me his more evil sounding phantom fits perfect to a character who should give you some scary vibes and not some "oh what a nice phantom he is" vibes.

If you didn't like the male vocalist, that's absolutely fine. It makes sense if you were expecting a performance similar to that of the musical. His approach is very different, and there's nothing wrong about you being honest about it.
The dude is an amazing singer. Yeah you expected his vocals to be like those other Phantoms of the Opera: clean vocals. He can sing clean vocals, but little vocal distortion to the voice, and that's the chef kiss stuff! Btw: some people think Tarja sang all songs like this (highly operatic and clear voice). No, no. She also sings with soft and sweet vocals, both classical and contemporary. Liseten for example "From Wishes to Eternity" 2000 Tampere concert, and most of the songs are sung completely different than this. There's so many approaches. - Many, many people actually love the style Marco played Phantom's role in this.

Henk was one of A.L.Webber's favorite phantoms. So this version was kept a bit more classic and Floor shines at the end with a 12 second F6 high note!!!
Im not going to be too harsh about this since a) its your personal opinion and each to their own, and b) your new to NW, so arent familiar with Marko. To answer your question 'do you guys like him?.... Is he a usual part of the band?', no we don't like him, we absolutely LOVE him! He was the bass player and second singer, and occasional co-songwriter, for Nightwish for 20 years, and is a much loved member of the band...because of his voice and his talent. I can tell you, having seen them live, there is nothing 'forced' in Markos voice - he can go from super aggressive to soft and gentle, and has an impressive falsetto. Basically, the man is a legend and an influential figure in European metal. To get a wider perspective on Marko as a singer, you could check out The Islander, or their cover of Pink Floyd's 'High Hopes', or his solo song 'Dead Gods Son'. Obviously, his voice might still just not be to your taste, and if so thats fine, but you might also find his voice more to your liking on those songs.

Marko just sang as a perfect Phantom. I think the voice was perfectly fitting the character. Much better than the movie, where the phantom have a clean voice doesn't go with the 'horrific' character.

For me, this is peak Nightwish, this is the Nightwish I discovered and loved. Marko and Tarja go together like PB&J...bread & butter...cookies & milk.
Marko can definitely sing great cleans; his vocal choices, imo, are them bringing a metal grit to the song. It's dark, about the Phantom posessing the singer, so the grit fits perfectly giving a sinister shading the song desperately needs. Not too long ago in July 2023, Marko and Tarja did a rendition in Switzerland, the first time they'd performed together in 18 years. ruclips.net/video/a2Uhb3Ha0EQ/видео.html In this one, he dials back the grit, and along with the slower pace, it feels more like the original musical.
Definitely don't give up on Marko; he's got some great vocals in other NW songs, as well as his original band Tarot and the supergroup Northern Kings. I really recommend you check out Tarot (Ashes to the Stars, I Walk Forever, Wings of Darkness), and on the NW side While Your Lips Are Still Red, The Islander, Master Passion Greed for Marko, and Over The Hills, Wishmaster, Nemo, The Siren, & The Pharoh Sails To Orion for peak Tarja.

Interesting interpretation of Marko's voice. RUclips has several prima opera soprano reactors who actually were so taken by Marko's voice that they spent more time on his performance than Tarja's. He has an amazing, versatile voice. He and Floor blend so well vocally. Tarja has embraced a more versatile vocal style since leaving Nightwish, and for 18 years has been releasing wonderful music. Phantom was my introduction to Nightwish. Love all their singers, all their songs. I do hope you listen to more. Try Ever Dream, from the same Wacken 2013 concert.
Maybe someone already asked this but why didn’t you put Bakery shop or something while in Germany for example? It would’ve showed the ones in the area. Thats how we always looked for some while driving there. 😊
Tarja and Markos voices are for me NW, when Tarja was fired she took the femal voice with her and no one have been able to replace her. And when Marko left he took the male voice with him, so now NW sound like a pop/ Celtic folkmusic band, not a symphonic metalband. And I think this 10th album they are doing now and they are not touring, just release the record next year, will be the end of NW. Maybe they do a reunion in 5 years or more but I don’t think so. Tuomas and Troy go on with Arie, Floor try to go solo or join a band, Emppu have another band..and the rest have probably other project to do. And when it comes to Tarja and Marko they have just releast that they are touring together in South america 2024, and I do hope they take the toure to Europa too.

Everyone has their own opinions as to what sounds right for them....if you want a more traditional male lead try Nightwish.. Floor n Henk's version. Personally I think Marco makes this song special....hes one of the best singers around....he gives it power....nothing strained in his vocals...and he gives the "phantom" a fear factor that is missing to me in all other versions....but...you tell it as you see it...if we all liked the same things wouldn't the world be a boring place....

I see you put some face gesture when you saw the drummer at the beggining... This was the last show with Tarja before she leaved. The thing is that she didn't knew it . That's why all af them seems like to be so emotional

You could search for Tarja instead of nightwish, phantom of the opera. She has performed it on her own shows with other male singers.
I would also recommend Floor singing "vilja lied" from the dutch tv show beste zanger, well practically all the songs she sings in that show ;-)
