I shampoo my hair with distilled water only, and it’s made a huge difference! I live in TX where the water is pretty hard. I moved here from NC, which had naturally soft water. It took me a long time to figure out why my hair started changing when I moved here, but once I did, the difference has been incredible! I’ve looked into shower filters, but it seems most don’t do that great of a job. Thanks for the info in this video!

@@alexsteph44 I go through 1.5 to 2 jugs of distilled water while doing my hair. I get the jugs from Walmart and heat it a bit before shampooing my hair. I’ve used it just straight from the jug without heating it too. I wet my hair, add the shampoo, and rinse with the distilled water. I also use distilled water in my spray bottle during styling. 😊

Hi Courtney! If I may add my grain of salt from a chemist’s viewpoint, it is unlikely than an apple vinegar rinse will significantly remove hard water deposit. Vinegar is made of acetic acid which has no chelating properties because of its chemical structure.
If you want to go for a natural alternative, you will have better luck with lemon juice which is made of citric acid and is chelating. However you have to be very careful with its very acidic pH. Hope that helps!

I think it might be more cost effective & convenient(less plastic waste too) to install a water filter on your shower head than to rinse with distilled water. If your water is so hard it's damaging pipes, might be time for a soft water or total water filtration system throughout your home (if you own the home of course.) Water that hard can give you kidney stones as well as be bad for your hair. Where I live we don't get that white, hard scaliness but instead a pink, slightly slimy residue from standing water. I must wipe out my dog's water bowl thoroughly before refilling it & wipe down the deck of the tub regularly or anywhere water might accumulate/dry repeatedly. We filter our drinking/cooking water but not our bathing water since it doesn't seem especially hard. ( My dog's water is filtered through a Brita but apparently it doesn't remove whatever the pink slime is)

    • @yensid4294

You'd probably have to check with the manufacturer of your shower head & see if they provide one or check with your local Lowes, Home Depot, hardware store & ask. After doing some digging I found a shower filter called aqua home group 20 layer filter system there’s also a showered head that you can add extra vitamin c for harder water . I live in Minneapolis and we have the top 5 hardest water on the country so i decided the 50 bucks was with trying I was actually shocked by the results even my kids are happy with it . I don’t think it works as good as a softener but makes it manageable and I can brush my hair again after shower .

Several videos on water-related hair problems and I’m so confused. 😣
Our water has measures around 350-500 ppm dissolved solids but my hair feel over-conditioned, overly soft, almost wet, but it’s super shiny, and getting my natural curls to curl has been a major struggle since I moved here. (Well-water.) It always feels WAY over-conditioned no matter whether I use Suave Daily clarifying or a chelating shampoo. I’ve had to recently just give up on conditioner entirely after living here a year. (All my old products and some new have failed me.) And my scalp and skin are both a mess; itchy, flaky, dry, irritated. To top it off, my hair looks like it’s thinning!? Idk, if it’s related, or just stress at this point, but I am totally at a loss. 4 years of curly (wavy?) method, and I’ve gone backwards. Negative progress.
I was regularly getting 3a curls before moving. Suddenly, especially the past maybe three months, I’m lucky to get 2a over most of my head, with weird spots that still want to attempt seriously disfigured 2c curls, but not down the entire lengths; just in spots, at the roots (with strait ends), mids and/or just ends.
I’m baffled. And I can’t seem to find anything anywhere on this.

I have been only washing my face with distilled water for a year now and so much of my acne on my face has cleared up and it's less oily because the hardness of my water and the chlorine and chloramines it's treated with in my area made it more dehydrated so it produced more oil. I have been thinking it would help my oily but dehydrated feeling scalp but that would be expensive!

How are chelating shampoos different than clarifying shampoos? Do rinsing and shampooing continue to deposit minerals on hair? Long term solutions are probably quite expensive.

You can test for hard water with Castile soap. If you put the soap in the water it will become cloudy if it’s hard.

I was wondering if your no 1 goal in your formulate formula, is curl definition?
I just started using formulate, and love it. I have thinning as my no 1 goal, and I've noticed significantly less hair fall since using. .
But my daughter has curl definition as no 1 goal, and we noticed a HUGE difference right away.

Is it weird that I'm struggling with naturally soft water? My scalp never feels clean unless I use a chelated shampoo, but then my hair lengths and ends get too stripped. I've tried regular or gentle shampoos for weeks/months, but my roots are stil limp even after my hair dries on wash day. My scalp is also often itchy and irritated (pinkish or redish). I used to get 3A spirals without even trying, but now it's really hard to get definition. I've also been losing a lot of hair to the point that my hair part is wider and the hair right beside the part is thinner (I can see more of my scalp than I used to).

Maybe just try a normal clarifying shampoo and not chelating because chelating is for hard water and is very drying. Clarifying is drying to but not as bad as it’s not meant to remove hard water and pool chemicals it’s only supposed to remove residue from your everyday products and silicones that build up
That being said whenever you clarify you must ALWAYS deep condition afterwards. If you struggle with your ends put some conditioner on your mid-shaft to ends before clarifying then after that follow up by deep condition your whole head to balance it out. This should work and please let me know if it helped

The distilled water business is a big hassle. I have water filters on my shower head and it helps. And I put a little white vinegar in water to rinse. The slightly acidic pH will lift the minerals, chelates the minerals, out of the hair. Condition well.
