Thanks for pushing it to the limit in a real world test, barely any reviewers have done this. You are the second. I just saw a vid of some indonesian guy make it 5 km out and back but he was flying towards a mountain and over there a lot less radio noise. He said get guards are bad for long range because the wind hit it so much.
So awesome. Here I am nail bitting and hearing your calming voice and level headed approach is so inspiring on where I need to be in my own personal crisisis. Great vid
Btw, I’m from the same island :). I’ve Always supported local families, even when they move to the mainland. Unfortunately I lost all of my drones, and some items that you’ve reviewed back in 2021. Our house was the one that had an electrical fire in the rain, 1hour into the new year. Unfortunately I’ve haven’t been able to afford another drone, and build a custom drone to help with SAR. My custom drone could mount LiDAR and IR/FLIR attachments. Since I’m a 100% disabled Veteran, I used to be a dog handler with Maui dog tags and helped with assisting in with the two missing women Moira/Scott. But a year later I moved to Vegas to become a weapons instructor at NAFB. I got to train teams on VIP/HVT extraction and protection escorting, but my injuries from deployments finally got the VA to rate me from a 0% and 7 years of fighting for my issues being all service related. 03-13 I served in the army and straight to OIF outta high school and OEF up until 2012. 7 deployments and the VA denied everything that I claimed when I got out. Thanks to many of the people who played the system and because of stolen valor. That’s what made it really difficult in hawaii to claim for anything service related. Plus the VA in hawaii in general treat you as a someone trying to cheat the system, or a drug addict trying to get pills. Nevada, Texas, and Washington were the only states that helped my claims, and all of the staff actually cared. Unfortunately in hawaii, most of the staff are disgruntled veterans or civilians that just are there to collect their pay, and like to set off new veterans who come in for help, just so they can utilize their power by having the armed guard remove you from the building. Anyways, I hope in the future I’ll be able to pick up an electric bike and a drone. Keep up with the content, you’ve always done great reviews with items that I’ve been interested in, but it’s hard to tell if those content creators are being unbiased during reviews, because of the sponsorship with certain brands. So that’s why I’m glad to have found your channel when you started out! Mahalo & Aloha.🎃
You are insane!! I can’t believe you’d go out that far to 50% without giving yourself some headroom to return. Also can’t believe that you didn’t just land before it got to 0%. It really is good to see what happens when it does get to 0% so glad that you dived in first.
Last night I ordered the DJI Avata Explorer Combo including a hard case, Fly more kit, RC controller and hard case. Just under $2k. Supposed to arrive tomorrow before 10PM. I've had the Mini 3 Pro and was really impressed with it's cinematic features. But it was time to start getting into FPV. The Avata seems to be both a cinematic and FPV so I think it's a great transition into FPV before I go full balls to the wall FPV!
That was a fun video! I just got into fpv this year and I caught the fpv bug bad! Your videos are a lot of fun to watch! They keep me interested! Take care! happy holidays
I just got into FPV in the early fall of 2022 also. Super fun & addictive hobby for sure. I started out with the Eachine Novice 4, Long Range RTF FPV Drone Package. Bought the DJI FPV drone package a month later, with the Fly More Combo, Hard Case, & Motion controller. I really like the motion controller, it's loads of fun, & I hardly use the regular controller now. I'm considering getting the Avata, but I'm just not sure about it.
@@sagemajka4871 awesome! I’ve been looking at the dji fpv and avata also! I love the camera drone features to be honest! Like return to home and auto hover stuff and yes would love the motion controller so my daughter can fly! I got the fpv controller for Christmas! :) I also like the new iflight chimara7 03! I may get that! Take care man! See you around
It will be interesting to see if Dji make a battery for these that has a higher amp hour rating in the future, I know that this has been done successfully with power tool batteries whilst keeping the actual battery case size the same. This drone is currently number 1 at the top of my list, the shrouded prop blades being of importance with my intended use surveying land. Thanks for a great review and hi from Australia.
It's not a long range drone like it's big brother, but interesting to see through your eyes (and not mine...lol) how far the transmission would go. Great drone for proximity flying and cinematic shots in close range. Glad you didn't lose it, and you got to test the find my drone fly app which works really well as expected. Thumbs up ! ;-)
Compared to your Avata 1 range test video from the same location. Things to note: Sport mode can achieve same range as Normal mode, Avata 2 seems to have similar transmission range as Avata 1 but can go slightly farther due to longer battery life, Avata 2 battery life seems to match max transmission distance well in average green environment AVATA 1 - Normal 11297ft / 2.14mi / 3.44km 48% battery 7:27 min RC 4 of 4 HD 3 of 4 @ 28Mbps 17.8 MPH out 17.8 MPH in (auto) / 11 MPH below 9% batt AVATA 2 - Normal 13646ft / 2.58mi / 4.16km 49% battery 9:28 min RC 1 of 4 HD 1 of 4 @ 1Mbps 17.8 MPH out 17.8 MPH in (manual) / auto land below 7% AVATA 2 - Sport 13945ft / 2.64mi / 4.25km 53% battery 5:00 min RC 3 of 4 HD 2 of 4 @ 6Mbps 35 MPH out 27 MPH in (auto)

Dave, Australia here. Great video. I was told by a few people here that select auto lands is better when battery is low as the computer. Calculates a lot better than flying it normally back
This video sold me on the drone. I was curious how hard it would be to find if I had to land it somewhere in a pinch and that is exactly what I was hoping for. Very cool!
I got stressed a bit. Good kind of stress I guess ‘cause this one got a happy ending. Glad DJI Avata made it. I guess my choice got validated. I love this drone!
The RANGE TEST needs to be done with some at the other end to receive the Drone. We need the full range and not having to trim it down in half due to RH.
That's awesome. Great test. I'd love to see you take it straight out to see how far it will truly go. instead of worrying about flying home, have a several destinations picked out that you know you can land if need to. Sometimes like a spot at 3.5, 4 and 4.5 miles and try to push it to the 4.5mile spot.
Thanx Dustin on my opinion I rather say its not that a wind resistant but it keeps up on its tracking on its way and the gimbal doing its work there manh, at least it tried its best, keep it up sir.
That was exciting, wondering if you were going to make it back or not! You've got the perfect location there off your 2nd-floor deck for range tests. Such an incredibly long line-of-sight. Looking forward to a test using Sport mode!
The second half of the battery is never going to have the performance of the first, so turning at 50% in calm conditions pretty much guarantees you won't make it back. If you fly out with a tailwind then you are double stuffed.
Great test The battery is the biggest restriction on this drone but I love flying mine.when you flew past 50 percent I thought there was trouble ahead Great Video bud 👍 and great Recovery
Way to push the distance. Didnt know it could fly as far without any connection issue or video lag. I will be in Kaneohe in a couple of weeks. Think I'm going to take my Avata and fly around Chinaman's Hat. Great video. Thanks.
I ordered a DJI mini 2 the other day, and have been reading all the drone regulations and what not. How to you legally do these range tests despite the VLOS rule in the US, (asking since you have said that you live in Hawaii). Do you apply for a permit of sort or do you just cross your fingers and hope for the best?
At 10:20 , the birds you see are thermaling, so they are in uplift, the AVATA drift naturally into the lift, like we do in paragliding, it explains why the drone needs to correct to the right... Edit: you can also see battery estimation time goes up, another sign drone is in the lift...
FYI, drones with lithium-ion batteries you can extend the battery by not charging the battery to 100% or going down to 0% going down to maybe 25 or 30% no lower than that and charging up to 80% and doing that overtime. Well add extra cycles to the battery That will extend it overtime. The health of it.
Just started watching. "Hopefully not too much of a nail biter" - you said it Dustin! I have no nails left and half of my right arm is gone from your range tests! 🤪 😜
This is like someones first drone flight, casually going under 50% battery one way, and then pushing against tree branches 25 feet into the air and calling it "nice and easy landing" :) That's why your drone was upside down, it fell down from that height.
the reason why it's eating a lot of battery on the way back is because it's battling against the wind coming from the right. That would definitely add up to the power consumption so it's always safe to return at around 60%, even better at 65%
I’ve made it to 5 kilometres with my dji mini 2 and almost lost it. I went from glass house lookout to mount Tibrogargan on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland Australia. I’d hovered over the mountain for about 3-5 minutes just looking around. I put it into automatic return to home from there, and at about 1700 metres out I noticed on the screen that it had stopped coming back home and was going into automatic landing. I pushed it all the way in normal mode and it started to sink again, so I had to keep giving it some up on the stick. At about 200 metres or so from home the battery was down to zero percent but I still got it back and didn’t have to go for a walk through the bush. I think that dji is conservative on the power left in the battery because they don’t want people complaining about losing their products lol. I was a bit worried for you for a while there, but was glad that you got it back.
Even though Normal mode is the most efficient it is a bit of a trap. The max speed at N mode is not so much depended by the wind conditions and you cannot realize how strong is the wind. To test the wind I switch it to sport mode from time to time to see how much the absolute max speed is been affected so I can estimate my range with safety
great test this drone was not made for long range its a cinewhoop, 95% of the time you should be flying low to the ground and objects range like this is better suited to a Air2s, I would give the example that this test was similar to 0-60 speed testing a Prius that car isnt made for speed and this drone isnt made to fly at these altitudes and distances. The tiling is caused by strong wind current catching the frame prop guards. This common for any cinewhoop flying at higher altitudes. In very strong wind it will even flip the drone over.
I just got one too. It's really fun. Only issue is the battery life and charging. You need to get the fly more kit + a 100w charger to get the most out of the charging rate (faster charge). The regular rate is low on the single charger.
In the u.s you need an armature radio liscense and you're legally aloud to unlock the goggles without fear of getting locked by the fcc. Once this is done, you can double the range of the avata dji doesn't have an fcc license, but you're NOT allowed to make money with any footage you gain if the goggles are hacked for the extra distance and in the uk I'm pretty sure ham Is banned

I think it's probably the latter
At 10:20 , the birds you see are thermaling, so they are in uplift, the AVATA drift naturally into the lift, like we do in paragliding, it explains why the drone needs to correct to the right... Edit: you can also see battery estimation time goes up, another sign drone is in the lift...

Got me on edge but I guess DJI Avata’s made for thrilling flights. Would 100% want the whole fpv experience.
You could have descend lower to avoid the high wind and save some battery for returning.... i dont know why u stay high
Better transmission, just feels safer also.
the reason why it's eating a lot of battery on the way back is because it's battling against the wind coming from the right. That would definitely add up to the power consumption so it's always safe to return at around 60%, even better at 65%
