Thanks for having me! I do just want to say to anyone watching this, it has taken years to grow my production business AND Make Pop Music. I got super fortunate that timelines and opportunities lined up for me and I’m grateful for it every day. I also will say, yes I make great money, however there is a lot behind the scenes. Even at $300k a year in total revenue, my businesses have overhead, commissions, we hire other producers, taxes, and the money is split 50/50. So just because you see $300k doesn’t mean I made $300k. It means the businesses make that and my wife and I end up with 60% of that split down the middle. It’s still amazing, but if you’re getting into the business realize that you won’t get to touch all the money you technically make. Keep track of your accounting and always remember tax season 😂
@@VictoriaWhitlockthank you! Maybe one day. If I was profiting $300k, I’d probably use a big majority of that to fund other people’s music careers or start a foundation or something 😂
Wow you smashed this video!!! I really enjoyed watching it and seeing what the other creators had to see! I am feeling super inspired! Thank you so so much for having me!
This one may be one of the best videos on youtube right now in my point of view regarding Music Producers and music production, wow, I loved every minute! great job! Like always!
Thanks to all creators for sharing this information it’s so weirdly difficult to find any information on how to make a living from a career standpoint n music and especially thanks to PLV for putting this video together! 😊
This was an amazing peek into not just the mindset of music content creators, but also the nitty gritty details of finances and product diversification. Those pie charts are -- hands down-- probably the most valuable images in the video. Putting this thing together must have taken an incredible amount of time and care, and it shows. You've made a fan and a subscriber out of me. Looking forward to much more!
This was so helpful and one of the most valuable videos I’ve seen on RUclips, thank you SO MUCH! Earned a new subscriber 🙏 been following Austin and make pop music for years so this was really cool to see a behind the scenes video
I think the most interesting takes were from the film composer. They were all awesome. But it's surprising to see how well a film composer is doing using social media. All of my commissions in short films and such are from social media but my following is very small so needless to say I have a day job lol. But seeing a young film composer with such a big instagram following is incredibly inspiring. Thank you for this video!
This was a great video. I’m starting on this journey and I’m already overwhelmed 😩 but there’s this inner voice telling me I just need to go for it. It’s like I can’t shake that feeling I got to create. All this is amazing. Challenging with still a 9-5 but I’m thankful for channels like this. ❤❤
So valuable getting all of this insight, grateful for everything shared by the creators and for you putting this all together and sharing it with us 🙏🏼
This is great. I’m in the EDM space, primarily in the heavy bass genre. There are a lot of producers that have patreons where they post song breakdowns , sample packs, FX racks, feedback streams and even masterclasses. As long as there’s a growing interest in learning music production you can build a business around your artist brand. Right now I want to start putting out tutorials and mixing videos but I procrastinate super hard. Just always second guessing myself if it’s worth it or not, but seeing a video like this is very motivating to just go and start doing it.
This was awesome. It would be really cool if it was possible to do the same kind of video but more indepth with each kind of income stream that these people have. Of course, you wouldn't want to be intrusive about it, but it would be so awesome to show a deeper nuts and bolts approach to each kind of income stream that these, or similar individuals many have. None the less, still a very eye opening video. thank you.
What I love the most of this video is that it makes feel the journey way more achievable. There are days where I struggle thinking it will never happen, but videos like this give a lot of courage to keep grinding Thanks!
Thank you all for your honest and transparent experience. This video was so motivating and inspiring at the same time. Wish all of you even more success and joy on your journey.
Honestly, I lack the confidence to be on camera, struggle to find ways to showcase my music with social content, and tend to make music that a verrrrry small amount of people connect with. My dream would be to have multiple revenue streams that all stem from music and creativity. It's so hard to see how to take that first step.
Write a script for your videos and that will help talking on camera. You wont be natural at first and thats okay! What matters most is that the information in the video is good. People dont care that much about how good you are on camera. And over time you will feel more comfortable with talking to a camera
Very helpful video. I recently lost my full time corporate SEO job, and have been locking in more these past few months to becoming a fulltime producer and content creator someday.
I gave up music because i couldn't figure out this part. Now I'm in school for electrical engineering. Now I spend all my time doing math and coding, I actually love it though
Awesome video and channel! Being a composer this info is definitely insightful and helpful to understand how all these producers function the business. I’ll still avoid social media…personal reasons, but if monetary was my primary goal I’d likely do same as these people.
I’m the same but I just practiced by filming myself on my iPhone making mistakes and doing lots of retakes, it’s ok mistakes bring experience and help improve you. People do business with people so we need people skills too.
Something barely touched on is standard of living. You worst month should cover all of your bills. You know that you'll squeek by. Second, you need great insurance that protects you if you have a short term disability or illness. I took a bad hit to the head once and it was weeks until the concussion really faded away and I could stand without vertigo. As a small business owner, if you can't work, you don't make money Speaking of not working? How will deal with taking regular time off? This is especially important if you have a spouse or children. Keep your social bonds strong. Keep them aware of your goals. Sometimes you have to grow by working more hours to get more clients. Then bump your rate so the low-ballers fall off and your workload goes down.
After watching this video, I feel as if I live in the ass of the world. And it is partly so. I am from the western part of Ukraine. As if I can do something, as if I write great music, as if I can shoot quality videos and I do it. But I have little views, I have practically no income for the last 2 years, especially after the war began. In larger and more important countries, people quickly become famous and receive money for living. I just don't have anything. It is very difficult not to get discouraged by this 🤷🏻♂️
Yeah just check them out, all their links are in the description. Then they have links to their portfolio or Spotify :) In terms of digital asset management I don't know what they use if they use any.
The pop music guy makes a lot because there's no one elese doing what he does at that level of quality. Not sure why beat making content creators dont really touch pop music
Im trying to make income from being a mastering engineer but every time i see someone asking for one on social media like a 100 people jump it like vultures lol competition is fierce lol
I think this is very misleading. Young people usually fall for this kind of stuff. If a person made $20,000 a month that would be terrific. That is so rare in life it’s unbelievable. And not to mention content creators are taxed so high so you always have to consider like 40 or 50% of whatever they claim they earn goes to taxes. My philosophy is you have to prove it to me I can’t just take your word for it that you make the amount of money you claim you make. Show the proof,so many people lie online it’s ridiculous. Thats the magic of online you can say anything and there’s no way to show proof. The only people who know what you made is you and the government. So yeah I made 20 thousand last month too!…p.s. I don’t mean to be negative but my experience is that people online can say anything and when years pass and you finally find out the truth a great majority were lying.
No worries, I totally understand! :) If you look just a little bit into these people's content/business, you'll see that they are not lying, they are very transparent about what they earn, how they earn and all things related. And if you check the pinned comment, we added about the taxes and business expenses, it's not something we hide. I honestly can't cover everything in a short youtube video, it would take hours haha but same again, if you look a bit more into my own content, I've been vocal about all these things, I don't hide them, that's the whole reason I make this content. To show people that IT IS possible, nothing misleading here 😉 P.S: I don't know where that 40-50% thing comes from, I put 30% aside last year each month for taxes and I ended up saving $10,000 too much!!! So I don't have that experience for taxes personally.
If a fortune teller could tell you with 100% certainty that you're not gonna make it in music, would you quit and do something else? If your answer is "yes" then you might as well quit because you're not going to
