Peter, your comparisons between South Africa, Rhodesia, and the United States are accurate and quite intriguing. I also found your explanation of Botswana very informative and shatters the misconception of subjugation by Europeans.
By the way, many are unaware of the Dutch influence in the US. President Martin Van Buren spoke Dutch before learning English. I am from Pittsburgh and the entire western Pennsylvania was settled by Scots-Irish from Ulster.

@@ayodejiolowokere1076 As I explained in the first talks places like Botswana and Zambia were Protectorates where Britain was asked in intercede to stop the Afrikaaners and Portuguese respectively pushing into those two areas.

I was born in Livingstone in 1962. My father worked for Susman Brothers and Wilson. I found this absolutely fascinating. What an incredible story teller Peter Jones, riveting. I was at the Kings visit to Livingstone in 2019. Thank you 🙏

Many thanks for this fascinating information. I grew up in both Northern Rhodesia (Ndola) and Rhodesia, (Bulawayo) and was not aware of all these achievements. By the way and I know I may be just a wee bit biased, I still think the Rhodesian accent is one of the finest in the English speaking world!
This channel is, in my opinion, of the highest calibre; it 'blows out the cobwebs'.. The Truth is what matters not peoples' perceptions of it. Please keep this channel going for as long as possible, because Africas' somewhat shrouded history needs to be understood correctly. Brilliant work John and Hannes.

Hats off to Zambia for not changing place names to score cheap political points. Unlike the SA Air Force, who barely gave any recognition to the centenary of the second oldest air force in the world and a low key parade to mark the centenary of AFB Zwartkop.

I was born in livingstone but lived in choma.
My father and mother, Terry and Audrey Norton had choma welding and engineering and in partnership with my maternal grandparents joe and Nora Barritt had madzimoyo farm.
Joe and Nora Barritt had come to Northern Rhodesia in 1923 with the imperial tobacco company.
Many choma families in those days. Bruce Millars. Greens. Becketts. Birrels.
Sold to Joe McGregor - Brooks in 1967 as I recall after the death of Joe Barritt.
Moved initially to South Africa and then Rhodesia in 1970.
All roads led to Rhodesia eventually. Then sadly all roads let out of Rhodesia. What a tragedy.
Joe's son Ian now lives in Livingstone.

Hannas and John,, this series is very informative. More so than what I was taught in school, in America. After a highschool teacher I had, from England, had my class do a study on the book Heart of Darkness and the movie Apocolypse Now, I became intrigued by the African continent. And the story about the bridge over the Zambesi...just incredible. What an adventure, what a venture.

A masterclass - very enlightening in comparing it to similar European expansions taking place contemporaneously in USA and Canada. Protectorate theres a word form 60 years ago!! the interview format works fantastically with the pics - just like sitting in Peters office and hearing him directly with him putting pics in front of us. Growing up in Rhodesia I had many ex North Rhodesian friends acquaintances, neigbours, parents friends - they were skilled farmers, electricians, miners, corporate CEOs It always seemed a one trick pony with the fabulously wealthy copperbelt which was the original poster child to laughably shocking African mismanagement of mines railways and infrastructure . one of my best friends parents used to receive a fully paid holiday back in UK for 6 months of the year for teaching in Livingston - copper is now making a comeback I see . Sad that Zambia, the blindspot of history, got totally sold out to the chinese according to my knowledge but i will wait for the next installment to see what the Peter the fundi says. great & fascinating production guys
Fascinating historical stories. Thanks Peter. Having also been brought up in Lusaka, Zambia in the '60s, I was at Ruzawi as well, maybe a couple of years ahead of Peter, but we probably travelled on the same coach at the beginning and end of terms. Small world.

You correctly say most people don't know how Africa works...... My uncle in conversation with lunch guests said, 'amazingly, most people don't know the trade off in Africa, it's a contradiction and unless you know the trade off, you'll never understand Africa.'

I do believe though at around 5 mins..when you were commenting on the huge European influences on Africa you omitted/forgot to include the massive influence from the East... long before....from the Arabian Emirates etc...Oman Yemen...then India...and.as far back as the early Chinese....on all African east coast territories...

History through the eyes of the settler. First time.
Wow what an interesting story and told in such detail, my parents lived in Broken Hill until the federation broke up, such a pity how Rhodesians were stabbed in the back by the Brits.
Maybe I missed it, but it seems Peter missed an important point in ascribing domination of Africa by Britain and a few other European nations...... when the Europeans arrived, Africa was largely dominated by Arab slave traders, in Central Africa controlled by the Dar Es Salaam/Zanzibar 'caliphate' (mostly Omanis and Yemenis). The Brits kicked the slavers out of the Rhodesia and Nyasaland, and then forced the Belgians to do the same in the Congo. Hence the pockets of Swahili speakers in Zambia, Malawi and Katanga today (see a tribal languages map of Zambia). So many people forget how the main slave trade routes by far, were North to Arab lands, rather than West to the Americas. Otherwise, excellent and enthralling talk.

You are correct but part of it does get mentioned later in the slave trade up the east coast which of course carried on for longer. It was the main reason for Livingstone's efforts in Africa, to get rid of the slave trade. Once it had been stopped by the Royal Navy on the west coast Livingstone's efforts moved to deal with the problem on the eastern side. I should have made this clearer.

What about the massacre of Alice Lenshina and her followers by the Zambian army....very easily forgotten and not mentioned by this Dude. So Zambia was not THE most peacfull country...
